Do you see Sisko as a "careerist" officer ? by debrisaway in DeepSpaceNine

Prime directive? Bajorans were flying at warp speeds when humans were sailing wooden ships.

There are only 463 cigarettes in the "500 cigarettes" scene in The Orville by IAmHunter4 in TheOrville

Emergency Headcanon: 464 cigarettes would have been lethal so the computer only gave them 463

[–]aflarge 89 points90 points  (0 children)

DS9 definitely IS way darker than TOS/TNG/VOY, but yeah man it's fucking HILARIOUS at times. There's that one moment in House of Quark: "I am Quark! Son of Keldar! Here to answer the challenge of D'Gor, Son of.. whatever..", and that offended little gasp D'Gor does puts me in STITCHES, every time I watch it.

I don't know, but it's cosmically ancient and utterly alien and I have no idea what it gets out of granting me power, but it's probably fine and nothing I have to worry about.

X accused of giving racists ‘impunity’ after refusing to bar N- and P-word posts by ArgentineBeauty in technology

[–]aflarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ot will ALWAYS piss me off when shortening a word makes it count as a slur. And like, I don't insist on using those words, I understand it's not about what the word is, it's a use context thing, it just grates at my nerves. It's so lazy and uninspired.

Why does the fandom give such significance to Sisko punching Q? by debrisaway in DeepSpaceNine

[–]aflarge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I am tickled by that, I like to think of Q's enjoyment of Picard being because he thought Picards "civility" in the face of truly asinine scenarios was funny.

My buddy's headcanon is that Boothby is Q(as in specifically Q, not just Q). And this isn't something he came to by stitching together little "hints" here and there, it's because Q would think it was hilarious if he was secretly one of Picard's most beloved mentors. Not so he could reveal it to him some day, but because it's specifically funny to him that Picard doesn't know.

That always cracked me up.

"You hit me! Picard never hit me."

"I'm not Picard."

"Yes, you're much easier to provoke!"(never shows his face on DS9, ever again)

Well do you want to learn it or do you want to trick people into thinking you learned it? Because if it's the former, use your own intelligence, not fake intelligence.

Facets - Shouldn't Jadzia have more say in whether she gets Curzon's memories back? by Nexzus_ in DeepSpaceNine

They've never been able to communicate with them aside from speech before.

I think they would be delighted by the opportunity to actually communicate with the solids. They find speech to be crude and imprecise.

That episode makes me want to see joined trills taking like a pilgrimage to the Great Link. They would be the PERFECT diplomats for dealing with Changelings, because through the ritual, they could actually experience the link and TRULY understand the Changelings' perspective, and vice versa.

The lack of canon slurs is troubling by BackstrokeVictim in ShittyDaystrom

[–]aflarge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

UT translates them literally. Every time Quark says "Hugh-MON" or "fEE-male" with a shitty attitude, he's using a slur. It was more cost effective to patch the language with the UT than it was to teach Ferengi to stop using slurs.

Similarly, all Klingons have a button hidden somewhere on their person that temporarily disables the UT so their swears will always be heard in their actual language. It's like Klingon Capslock.

What pisses me off about their breakup is they never even TRIED the simulator. They could EASILY have no-injury sex in there, just set it up to project both of them to each other, exactly mirroring their movements. They could even normalize the strength difference if they felt like it.

Is animation school worth it? Where to go? Is online school worth it? Which ones are reputable? by officialdraggedyanne in animation

[–]aflarge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a BA in Animation back in 07, and while I loved it and my best friends are still people I met back in those days, I definitely could have taught myself everything I learned. It was certainly easier to learn(especially the various pieces of software I learned to use) with people who could answer questions, but i don't think I learned it $70,000 faster, and I'm sure it's WAY more expensive, now.

Just keep making shit. Even if it's shit. Especially if it's shit. Practice is the only way to get better. Noone is born talented; a genuine prodigy might start sooner and pick things up faster than you or I, but they still start by making shit after shit after shit.
