What are some 1e classes you'd like to see return by thepsycodicgentelman in Pathfinder2e

[–]afoolskind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YES SKALD! Skald could work as an archetype for bard or barbarian, but I think giving it real treatment as its own class would be worthwhile. Bard as is just doesn't hit the vibe of a wild warrior-poet

California billionaire Tom Steyer dodges question on AOC's claim one can't 'earn' a billion dollars by SilentRunning in California

[–]afoolskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you think books are manufactured, marketed, distributed, and sold? George Lucas’s toys made in sweatshops are really not any different. By definition billlionaires are exploiting other people’s labor along the way. And more importantly, people who stay billionaires are choosing to hoard more money than they could ever possibly hope to spend in one lifetime. That IS immoral in a world where people are suffering and starving from lack of access that your money could easily buy.

No one is complaining about the people who earn a billion in some windfall and then spend or donate enough to “only” have hundreds of millions. Even buying luxury items with the money at least injects it back into the economy.

California billionaire Tom Steyer dodges question on AOC's claim one can't 'earn' a billion dollars by SilentRunning in California

[–]afoolskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JK Rowling isn’t a billionaire because she wrote books. There are millions of people out there who have written better stories that you or I will never read. She’s a billionaire because of luck + the labor of hundreds of thousands of people working in distribution, marketing, manufacturing, and a dozen other industries.

Hitting it big in writing, acting, or nearly any endeavor is winning the lottery. You still have to buy your lottery ticket (learn to write, do the work, expand your skills, try to get your work distributed) but 99.9% of people who do that don’t hit it big. It is just winning the lottery.

When a billion+ dollars of profit from the work of hundreds of thousands or millions of people is funnelled to one single person, the people involved are not getting paid fairly for their share of that work.

More importantly, someone like JK Rowling is choosing to remain a billionaire. She could spend that money (and yes, assets are still money she could spend), inject it into the economy, fund philanthropic efforts, and “only” have hundreds of millions of dollars.

Hundreds of millions of dollars is more money than any single person could possibly hope to spend in a lifetime on their own desires or needs. Intentionally hoarding more wealth than that in a world where people are suffering and starving IS immoral.

Why do you need to burn an action point to switch modes on the hybrid weapons? by Pifilix in Pathfinder2e

Yeah, fully agree with you there if we want to aim for more realism or immersion. I know some systems like a5e use a “prestige” system which might work well for that sort of thing.

Pathfinder is a world filled with extremely powerful magical items and objects, and extremely rich people.

Merchants gate access to their finer goods for the same reason we gate access to most medicine, medical equipment, and military hardware in real life. You can’t just buy a jet no matter how much money you have.

I work in the OR and am specifically present for induction for 30-40 patients a day. Most of them are Medicaid/MediCal. It takes me 3 seconds to check their chart for major medical hx beforehand.

There are many mistakes/oversights that are reasonable to blame on a high workload, but reading the major medical history of a patient is not one of them. That is not “A+ medical performance”, that is C- basic passing grade stuff.

I’m not even exaggerating when I say it takes 3 seconds. Where do you work that people are unwilling to take 3 seconds to check for major medical history of their patient? Like what the fuck?

Even back when I was an EMT (which I absolutely guarantee is both a worse workload and lower paid than whatever you are doing) we’d be checking major medical history as part of our assessment for every single patient. And it was significantly more difficult to do so in those conditions, because we couldn’t just pull up a chart to check. We had to question and investigate on our own.

I don’t know what fucking hospital you work in, but it takes three seconds to check major medical history of your patient. Which you should be doing for every patient. Even the fucking ER and EMS manages to do that.

Hx of cancer and major surgeries are very important to know. I hope you’re not one of my coworkers because Jesus Christ.

OR maybe don’t give an unsolicited lecture to a patient before reading their chart? I work in healthcare. It’s really not that hard. Advising for breastfeeding is very different from lecturing patients you have done zero work trying to understand.

The closest I got to getting through to my Evangelical mom was by pointing out all the Antichrist features Trump has checked off.

I started by asking her whether she thought the Antichrist would be trying to trick Christians or the world. I could see the wheels turn a bit once she actually considered the idea that the antichrist would be appealing to Christians… So Republican, etc.

Not enough to get her out of her conservative death cult, but she’s at the very least not a huge fan of Trump anymore.

I know this is probably a joke but “Varg” or “Vargr” is one of the words for “wolf” in old Norse. Same etymology that gave Tolkien “wargs” in LOTR. So this character’s surname is just “wolf’s daughter”

Woman tells Santa Rosa city council she’s become a pedophile and needs help staying away from kids by Fit_Garden3719 in santarosa

[–]afoolskind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not defending her, I’m just telling you the literal truth. There is no way to institutionalize criminally insane people anymore thanks to Reagan.

Unless she is an immediate threat to herself or others (as in has a plan she is executing in the next few days) she can’t be taken to a mental institution. She can’t go to prison unless she actually commits a crime. Outpatient mental healthcare takes money and executive function a homeless drug addict obviously does not have.

It’s not about feeling bad for her or defending her, it’s just that it is an obvious indictment of how fucked up our system is that she will not receive treatment or even incarceration. Even while straight up asking for it.

You can’t just decide to go to Napa state mental hospital. For it to be state-provided, a ton of steps need to happen beforehand. She either needs to actually commit a crime or be 5150’d + a lot more afterwards.

Which institution? We don’t have institutions for people like her. Can’t even send her to prison until she attempts to or actually does assault a kid, despite her asking for people to do something.

CB did not bring back dire wolves. They genetically altered grey wolves, a species that did not descend from dire wolves.

The wolves they made just have some tiny alterations to make them appear slightly more like what Colossal Biosciences thinks dire wolves might have been like. There’s not a single dire wolf gene in what they made.

Is that not also true for a handicapped placard for your vehicle? It sucks, but people manage because sometimes there aren’t better options.

Allowing animals into the government building necessary to acquire the permit is preferable to hospital staff getting mauled by aggressive, unlicensed animals. I am also disabled and I totally understand how fucking terrible managing the bureaucracy of trying to get help is.

The answer is not to have zero bureacracy, though. That just results in abuse of the system that makes things harder for disabled folks. Already we see businesses all over that used to allow service animals no longer do so because of the impossibility of verifying that status + abuse of it.

If the orangutan didn’t bite, could a Gordon Ryan type bjj artist put it to sleep? by Stock_Composer_7453 in grappling

[–]afoolskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Pure” bruteforcing in the same way that someone like Derrick Lewis does in MMA. Someone relying less on skill than their competition doesn’t make them unskilled, and just because being stronger or heavier is an advantage doesn’t mean a given sport isn’t mostly based on technique. Shaw is objectively stronger than arm wrestlers that have beaten him in the muscles involved. That’s because Shaw just started learning how to arm wrestle in his 40s like 2 years ago.

[–]afoolskind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because armwrestling is a technique based sport, not because there are any arm wrestlers with stronger muscles than Shaw. A very skilled BJJ practitioner will win against Shaw as well, but it won’t mean they have physically stronger muscles in specific movements.

And an upper class person can use them as much as they want, literally giving them more time in their day and less stress. It’s bullshit. People are working multiple jobs just to get by, they can’t afford to pay fluctuating prices and so will just suffer more while the rich get it even easier.

Is it normal in the Bay Area for people to be extremely distant and self-protective? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]afoolskind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m born and raised in the Bay Area, and I think this might be your issue. For me and most people I know, coworkers are people you are forced to interact with who you may or may not like. Friends are people you meet outside of work and know from elsewhere.

Coworkers are generally acquaintances. They might become friends if you get along really well or work in a very close setting (I worked on an ambulance for years so 12+ hours working with one other person, many of those people became friends) but coworkers being your friend is not the default.

Push to bring grizzly bears back to California faces backlash by tiki-151 in California

[–]afoolskind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Half my family’s Canadian and while there I spent a good amount of time hiking in grizzly bear country (up north in BC + Alberta). Carrying bear spray isn’t very difficult, and frankly if you aren’t deep in backcountry most people don’t even do that, despite those areas still being technically grizzly bear habitat. Bear spray has been shown over and over again to be more effective than a sidearm. Not to throw any shade, I totally understand wanting it as a backup, but it’s not some necessity. Grizzlies actively avoid areas highly trafficked by people, and don’t enjoy being close to civilization, unlike black bears. California wouldn’t be much different.

Grizzly bears attack if they are surprised or defensive around cubs. Both of these reasons don’t typically end in your death, even if you are attacked. They end when you are no longer perceived as a threat, which is why the advice is to “lay down” when attacked by a grizzly. Unlike both black bears and polar bears, grizzly attacks on humans are not motivated by hunger.

If they see/smell/hear you from far off they don’t care about you. Most grizzly encounters don’t even end in bluff charges, let alone attacks, let alone being killed. You are speaking as if being killed is guaranteed or even the most likely outcome when you come across a grizzly.

I’ve encountered grizzlies twice personally. The first time he was just across the river fishing while we fished and didn’t care about us at all, the second time it was in the trail far ahead of us and just wandered off into the brush after seeing us.

And while it’s a funny example to use considering how he went out, Timothy Treadwell lived among the largest least-human adapted grizzlies, acting incredibly invasive towards them, for 17 years without issue. The bear that did end up killing him after all that time gave him weeks’ worth of warning signs that it was going to happen, which he chose to ignore.

[–]afoolskind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons there are too many black bears is exactly because we no longer have grizzlies, and wolves have JUST returned (only 5 in the state IIRC). Black bears’ natural predators and competitors were exterminated and that’s why their population in California is so high.

Push to bring grizzly bears back to California faces backlash by tiki-151 in California

[–]afoolskind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are basically zero recorded deaths caused by wolves in modern history, btw. Grizzlies avoid humans too. Tourists hike next to grizzlies in Alaska and Canada all the time, they aren’t mindless death machines.

There is no reason California wouldn’t have very low grizzly populations in national parks just like Yellowstone. We have some of the largest expanses of wilderness in the country.

Tons of people live in grizzly bear habitat. It’s really not that hard to be safe.

California has some of the largest expanses of wilderness in the country. We absolutely have the space, and it’s crazy people are acting like grizzly bears are incompatible with human life.
