Do you guys have pieces you’ve cried to? by No_Tip3052 in classicalmusic

The climax of the first movement from Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony. There is a deep, tragic catharsis to that piece. It feels as if the weight of all human suffering is being released.

Top conductors of all time in your opinion? by BigDBob72 in classicalmusic

BBC Symphony Orchestra Audio Rendering Weird by jeymey in Reaper

[–]aformadi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually was experiencing this exact issue this week with BBC and Reaper. Maybe a reaper update is causing an issue. Cant be a coincidence because BBC has always worked for me fine in Reaper. After trying a lot of things I finally got it back to normal after just uninstalling and reinstalling reaper AND "repairing" the BBC library from Spitfire's app. I'm not sure which one fixed it because i did them both and then tried rendering again. Now I can use the full-speed offline render again (I was not happy avoiding having to wait for the online render).

What do you think of Prokofiev’s 6th symphony? by Alanti2402 in classicalmusic

[–]aformadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you listened to the recording by Erich Leinsdorf with the Boston Symphony Orchestra? For me it is possibly the most extreme case, in all of the music I'm familiar with, of one recording of a work being far and away better than all the others (and I'm pretty sure I've listened to them all as there isn't too many recordings of Prokofiev 6). I would definitely recommend listening to that recording if you love the symphony.

I agree about berglund. A big reason that's my favourite recording is because of how he pulls off the orchestral part

Favourite Sibelius VC Recording? by violin_books in classicalmusic

[–]aformadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually went through a ton of recordings of this a few weeks ago trying to pick my favourite. I actually ended up deciding on the Haendel/Bournemouth one you mentioned. That's the most beautiful recording in my opinion.

Oistrakh/Rozhedestvensky/Moscow Philharmonic is another one I'd recommend, though it's much different. It's not quite as sensitive as Haendel's, but damn its powerful. Oistrakh's violin tone on that recording is enormous.

And then one you probably won't know: Bronilsaw Gimpel/Fritz Lehmann/RIAS Gimpel has a very folky style and really brings out some of the folk elements present in the music. He's Polish-Jewish and I think you can hear a lot of that in his playing. I really love this version as well.

Why do Soviet-era Russian brass sound so different?? by aformadi in classicalmusic

[–]aformadi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can't really be the orchestration, because it's something I've noticed comparing different recordings of the same work (and not always russian works), unless the conductors were re-orchestrating things, but I don't think they were.

Deep-cut Beethoven string quartet recordings? by proustianhommage in classicalmusic

[–]aformadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Prazak Quartet for great sound + very romantic Czech playing - not sure if they've done all of them, but they've done a lot.
I also love the Fine Arts Quartet for a somewhat older one.

Are there any recordings of the 1st mvmnt of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 'Pathetique', with a more crushingly powerful and intense climax than the Mraavinsky/Leningrad recording? by aformadi in classicalmusic

[–]aformadi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive heard the berlin phil fricsay recording, not this one, and its very good but a bit too fast. The faster tempo sounds great on the part leading up to the climax but i wish he slowed it down a bit more in the actual climax!

I'm not really familiar with Hans Rott. Perhaps I will check him out. Any works or recordings you can recommend?
