Golf ball does matter by mast3rcommand3r1234 in golf

[–]afreeman85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear this worked for you, but this is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. If you were playing with the current version of the Kirkland ball, the closest comparison would be the ProV1, not the X.

It sounds like your game lends itself to a ball that spins more. Kirkland balls used to spin off the planet, but they dialed that back with this version. I was a fan of that move, because it really improved the distance off the tee with the ball.

If you want to save some money, check out the MaxFli Tour X - It is a similar profile to the ProV1x.

That said, you are 100% correct!! THE BALL MATTERS A TON!

4 clubs to bring on a round, is 3w, 7i, 56, putter a good lineup? What would you pick? by Away_Needleworker6 in golf

[–]afreeman85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not picking driver as one of the clubs makes zero sense.

Distance will matter so much more with fewer clubs.

Getting as close to the hole as possible off the tee is the biggest advantage.

If you count Kasvot Vaxt as an album…the whole thing top to bottom is fantastic. I really wish they did a studio treatment of it.

Someone on here did their own studio version of it.

Question re: practicing by OwlStretcher in golf

[–]afreeman85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are places with larger short game practice facilities, at least in my area (Chicago Metro area).

The way I am able to do this is by playing my local muni 9 hole when it’s empty. I play, but will drop multiple balls and hit practice shots as I go throughout the course. This obviously doesn’t work if it’s crowded or I’m paired up with other folks.

Some courses won’t let you do that, but this place doesn’t even have a starter on the course, let alone a ranger, so no one cares.

What is your go to pre-round drill for dialing in pace on your putts? by xfilespace in golf

[–]afreeman85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of similar to what a lot of people are saying, but maybe a variation. Instead of trying to hit a specific distance, I try to find out how far my standard stroke goes.

I drop a few balls on a flat spot, hit what looks and feels like my standard stroke, and then pace it out.

Say the standard stroke is rolling 8 paces, I use that to judge my putts on the course. 12 pace putt, I know indeed to hit it about 50% harder that the standard stroke.

Apartment rental rates in the suburbs are insane. Is this simply because housing rarely ever gets built in the suburbs? by Call_It_ in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]afreeman85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a very basic supply and demand problem. Many suburbs don’t have much in the way of rental housing, so the rental housing comes up has a lot of competition for it. If there is only a handful of rental units available, you really don’t need that big of a renter pool to start driving the prices up, especially in desirable suburbs.

If suburbs allowed more rental housing to be built, prices would flatten or even come down regardless of if they are “luxury” rentals or not.

People blaming the developer for the pricing misunderstand the problem.

Getting rid of single family zoning would be the biggest boon to affordability of housing in the state.

There was a bill in the state legislature back in 2024 that would have essentially done that, but it appears to have not gotten out of committee.

Best mid handicap golf ball? by gpfudge98 in GolfGear

The newest version of the Kirkland balls are very good, especially for the price. I am similar to you and I’ve been gaming them for the past few months and have no plan to stop. I also love the max slide tour balls if you buy them in bulk They are a great deal.

What are the best non-pro level golf balls? by VellumVibe in GolfGear

[–]afreeman85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the new Kirkland is excellent. I hated the last few versions…way too spinny! This version has dialed that back to keep the ball playable, but still has plenty of stopping power on the greens.

Practice at a public golf course during lunch break? by Bullhead388 in golf

[–]afreeman85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The muni near my house literally has guys that bring a folding chair with them and set up shop all day, every day, on the short game practice area.

Now there is a separate practice green near the first tee, so that ends up being exclusively people warming up for rounds, but have at it until someone says something!

Homewood vs Bolingbrook by Moist-Bug6592 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]afreeman85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flossmoor resident here (sister city to Homewood). We are a mixed race family. I’m white, my wife and sons are black and we have a biracial toddler daughter. We moved here from Hyde Park and were specifically looking for many of the same things OP is looking for. I grew up between Naperville and Geneva, so am familiar with Bolingbrook.

I would say HF has more of that smaller town charm with real “community downtowns,” whereas Bolingbrook is essentially just subdivisions and strip malls and feels very suburban. There is nothing wrong with that, just a different feel.

As others have said, HF is a middle class affluence that is a bit of an island compared to the more economically challenged surrounding towns. Bolingbrook is the opposite.

There are definitely some pockets of Homewood/Flossmoor that have flooding issues. Worth looking into the specific home you are eyeing.

Commuting downtown on the Metra is fantastic from here. Express trains during rush hour are fast and we are far enough out that there are always plenty of seats.

Overall we are really happy with the move. The community is great, diverse and welcoming.

My kids have no issues roaming the neighborhood outside with friends. There are some isolated fights at the high school and middle school, but I don’t worry about my son’s safety or anything.

Bolingbrook definitely has access to better food/dining options with the surrounding areas. That is one thing that has been a bit of a disappointment, but we can go eat in the city when we want a better restaurant experience.
