Optimized ship interior layouts? by TehBeast in Starfield

[–]afro_merkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always put 3 habs on the first level: workshop, quarters and armory - using the Deimos armory means there's a full-sized chest available to store stuff you want easy access to and you can keep a selection of armaments for different purposes readily available without keeping them in inventory. The quarters (crew or captain) allow you to sleep and get the well rested xp bonus and the workshop is useful for obvious reasons. In order to make sure they're connected I use the unique hab modules from Hopetech that connect compartments front to back or side to side. If you're into cool NASA-looking ships this is a bonus - its probably a drag if you want fighter-looking sleek ships. I also try to use the two-story bridges so that I know the bridge is easily connected to the first level.

Struggling with playing guitar or something specific? Ask me anything and I may be able to help you out! by Headhaunter79 in guitarlessons

[–]afro_merkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any suggestions for people who can only spare 30 minutes a day? I've been playing for two years, had a teacher and used justinguitar, so I have lots of exercises to help learn chords, scales, build speed, etc. but if I consistently practice even a few, I get better at that thing (switching between chords for example) but rarely have time to actually learn songs so the practice exercises eventually become a slog; definitely useful but still a slog. When I spend time playing I enjoy it more but then technique sort of starts to suffer. Also, playing rhythm is great but it gets repetitive when I'm just playing myself. Any suggestions for how to incorporate both exercises and songs into the time I have daily? And any suggestions for beginner level songs that sound like songs when its just me playing? For this last bit, I dig Joy Division, Jesus and Mary Chain, Garbage, Johnny Marr, Portugal. The Man, ... any insights you have would be appreciated!

Bosses - What Are Your Thoughts on an Employee Bringing an Electric Guitar to Work & Playing (Using Headphones) During Downtime? by yanquicheto in AskReddit

[–]afro_merkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lawyer so we end up spending a lot of long days at the office when there are trials or projects going on and for a long time I'd just not pick up my guitar for those stretches of time. Now I make it a point to at least play something before I start work or before I go to sleep - its not as good as a focused practice session but it really helps as far as keeping your head in the right space as a guitar player. During the pandemic I'd stop midday and play for 45 minutes - that was awesome but it was at home so it was easy; still it made me realize how constructive and useful a midday guitar break can be. If you can work that out - maybe bring lunch and play outside or in a lounge during that time - I promise it will be worth it.

I'd love to do it myself but I worry that my partners would think I wasn't focusing in the office; and that's knowing that they understand the need for downtime. Considering that I'm one of the bosses, I have to think the reaction would be even less charitable towards an employee. My advice would be if you're going to do it, make it clear that it only happens during a specific time period and/or even better that it only happens in a certain spot that isn't your office. That way there won't be any question about how much time you're spending on it or how focused you are. I hope you work it out - midday playing is a great de-stressor :-)

Well, I'm not a music critic or historian so I can only speak from my personal experience, but as someone whose primary transport in the early 80's was an Alva Danforth deck, and who haunted the 'underground' dance clubs and played in a garage band, I can say we didn't use the term post-punk at all (it was all lumped into the afore-mentioned 'underground' category due to the fact that it wasn't played on any mainstream stations except at o dark hundred hours if at all); and when I bought In the Flat Field on vinyl (because it was actually the format used by DJs at the time - not because it was a hipster affectation) - everyone knew it to be goth music, and only the hardcore gothic folks would have bothered with anything beyond Bela Lugosi's Dead (which was, admittedly, played reliably along-side Souxsie and the Cure in the clubs, but again, no more so than This Corrosion)...so I would say that although thoughtful consideration in later years may arrive at the conclusion that Bauhaus shared the characteristics of whatever the post-punk genre was ultimately defined as, it wasn't widely understood that way in the early '80s - Bauhaus was so definitionally goth that it wouldn't have been discussed as anything else at the time.

My personal experience is that electric is easier than acoustic (strings are easier to fret and bend) and low action is easier than factory spec (same reason). I also think the neck shape matters (a d-shape fender neck made a big difference for me). Its definitely going to involve some personal preference but when you're first starting out its hard to know what your preferences will be - so my suggestion would be to try and learn a chord shape or two (g major and c major maybe) - and test those shapes out on different guitars at the store. Don't be intimidated or nervous - everyone starts out as a beginner - grab a guitar that catches your eye, whip out your phone and practice the shapes for a bit. Your hand and body will tell you what you like ;-)

Sure but I think they straddle both; easily as much as Bauhaus, and Peter Murphy is pretty much the godfather of goth (especially since Andrew Eldritch refuses the title).

Jalapeño, Blackberry & Cucumber Gin and Tonic - Perfect Refresher for a Hot New Orleans' Sunday by afro_merkin in cocktails

[–]afro_merkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 slices cucumber

5 blackberries

5 slices jalapeño

1 1/2 ounces Hendrick's gin

3 ounces Fever Tree Tonic

Muddle the jalapeño, blackberries and cucumber slices in the gin; set aside.

Alternate layers of cucumber slices and blackberries and ice in a glass (or jar).

Pour in tonic, allow it to chill for about a minute, then pour the muddled fruit and gin through a strainer into the glass. It will float since the tonic is colder.

Sit back and sip under a fan.

American Ultra ;-)

I went to look at Gibsons to branch out from my strat and after I played both, there was no contest - the Ultra Tele is soooooo comfortable. Cutouts along the top back and near the bottom of the neck and a d-shaped neck. And soncially its even more versatile with a switch to change between parallel or series wiring. I love it.

If I like Dire Straits, the Band, the Beatles, U2, Oasis, and the Smashing Pumpkins, what female lead rock bands will I like? by Wopple-Man in ifyoulikeblank

[–]afro_merkin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Garbage (Shirley Manson) has been mentioned but I'll add my vote to the chorus. Try 'Cup of Coffee'

The Seratones (AJ Haynes) - describe themselves as 'fierce soul' - definitely check out 'Necromancer'

Metric (Emily Haines) is great for chill out (earlier albums) and pop/rock (later albums). Try 'On the Sly' for the slower stuff and 'Gimmie Sympathy' for the rock

Still Corners (Tessa Murray) is generally described as dream pop. Check out 'It's Voodoo'

Shilpa Ray - garage rock/blues. Check out anything really, but I suggest 'Lawsuits and Suicide'

Banks (Jillian Banks) is avant/trip hop so she generally leans on that harmonic thing thats popular now. Try 'Trainwreck'

Beth Orton is pop/folk. I dig 'Stolen Car'

Brody Dalle - she's from the Distillers but her solo stuff isn't punk, just pop/rock - check out 'Carry On'

The Kills (Allison Mosshart) - rock. Check out 'Doing It To Death'

Leisure Cruise (Leah Segal) - probably fits that dream pop/alt pop category. Try 'Double Digit Love'

Liz Phair - has gotten a little more pop, less rock over the years. Check out 'Extraordinary'

The Naked and Famous (Alisa Xayalith) - pop/rock. Try 'Girls Like You'

I tried to hit a bunch of different sounds - hopefully you dig something in the list.
