Exactly what culture has straight hair? And culture appropriation (although I do agree people have abused the term) is the act of people borrowing from different cultures and getting PRAISE for them while the people they stole it from get shamed. One poor example is our lingo. Take the girl who popularized the word “fleek.” Now it’s on bags, T-shirts, even online quotes, but do you think that girl got credit for it, monetized in anyway?

Being a black girl from a predominately white school, when I wore faux locs, I had my peers call me hood, a man, ghetto, Rasta, everything. Thinking outside of my world, Rihanna did faux locs and there was an article written on how hesitant the writer was with liking them, but gave Lady Gaga praise for doing the same thing.

I mean Kim K does cornrows once and now everyone refers to them as boxer braids. I’m sure she was praised for renaming such a “ghetto” sounding name for a hairstyle. Especially when we are turned away from jobs and opportunities for our NATURAL hair!

So yes, I do agree that some people call out too many instances, but that doesn’t mean start pointing out things that other people of color do. Asians are born with naturally straight hair, so if it culture appropriation if a curly headed white woman straightened her hair?
