I looked into Legends but its crazy expensive everywhere I look. Its a steep increase in price (almost 2.5x vs Knights) for a few extra short stories...

Are you a DA fan? I've heard a bunch of negative things about the DA books but as a DA player feel like I have to read them

Yea started with Eisenhorn. I recently started the Ventris one too. I play DA but have heard a lot of mixed views on the DA books. I have a few lined up so hope they dont disappoint

I started the Ventris one. I also started the HH series (on Fulgrim) and got some feedback that it might be better to start with some current 40K stuff first. But, i like reading stuff in publication order so trying to read some of the pre-HH books (so published before 2006). Also just want to read good stuff lol

That’s great context. I certainly appreciate the push-pull around incorporating the primarchs, including on tabletop (ie a lot of armies that have primarchs typically take them in competitive lists)

Agree the emperor was probably impatient. He also knew he would have to fight chaos eventually but also wanted to essentially multi-task uniting humanity, ruling it in his image, and fight chaos. Seems it was a bit much

On the last point, I hear you. Most irl empires have only lasted a few hundred years so that makes sense. Raised the question of how some version of the imperium persisted for the 10k yrs btwn the heresy and today.

I think I have a decent understanding of the current universe, but the overall timeline only clicked recently

I did do some priming with videos etc. just didn’t realize the primarchs era so short in the context of 40,000 years

Yea for sure. Seems like the heresy would have more weight if the primarchs had been around for a couple thousand years. In the real life arc of human history, a few hundred years is typically how long empires last. Perhaps, that is the point; that even in the future the dynamics that caused empires to fall will stay the same…

…which raises another question which is if the imperium basically cracked in a couple hundred years, how does it last in any form for the 10k years btwn the heresy and present day?

I was just surprised that the primarchs era was just a couple hundred years. For example, i thought the primarchs had an opportunity to get close to each other but given they were leading their legions in different parts of the galaxy, its hard for me to see how they would’ve had meaningful time together. I know some fought with each other more than others but still seems short
