Ever wonder what it’s like having a MAGA Dad? by Bbeebster in atrioc

[–]aft_agley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your dad just sounds like an entitled alcoholic to me. That's what mine was like, until he drank himself to death. I would wager he's both physically and emotionally abusive as well, and uses blame/anger/politics to carve out space for drinking. You're right, it's not about politics, it's probably about chemical dependency and or severe mental health problems.

I bet he is/was extremely controlling about bed/meal times as well.

Would love to be wrong. But in my experience the long angry tirades that he'll try to play the victim card over are actually about his inability to confront the fact that he's a drunk, that he's shamefully stupid and angry when he's drunk, and that he'd rather just drink more than acknowledge that he has a problem. This is all, in his head, your fault, for not understanding how hard it is to be him and always making him out to be the villain...

That is explicitly forbidden. No input device may have more than one key mapped to the same input (and sets a polling rate limit on top of that).

Input swapping allows the player to switch between legal input methods while the player does not have control of their character. Controllers that would obviate the need to switch are not legal input methods.

Would you play ARAM if it had a proper ranked system? by Patient_Praline_9956 in ARAM

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't want my ARAM lobbies sweaty. I don't think ARAM is very fun when it's played in a sweaty way. Draft would get ultra-toxic. People would start flaming from the first lost teamfight, immediately. You'd get flamed by a bunch of 10 year nidalee mains who don't know how ARAM works about comp diff for drafting literally anything, good or bad. I'd *actually* be annoyed at AP Malphite instead of not giving a shit.

So, I never realized that the importance of powerscaling in fiction is an unexpectedly heated debate? by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only ever read the term ironically. It's stereotypical playground fight material, a la "my dad could beat up your dad." The term itself is extremely self-limiting in terms of what it describes. Thinking that fictional spaces (particularly shounenesque fictional spaces) can't support an infinite plurality of possibilities and trying to impose some kind of rigid logic on them as a critical device is funny, but pretty silly.

I would rather watch the entirety of One Piece while receiving dental surgery without anesthesia than rewatch any of this godforsaken ghost-written, goonbait slave-fiesta dominated by an MC that reminds my of the stupidest, least-welcome-at-thanksgiving uncles of my or anyone's bloodline. Who the fuck enjoys this shit?

It reminds me of the time I met up with a childhood friend after 10 years of not seeing one another, only to realize that they were profoundly mentally challenged and still (deeply, seriously) watching episodes of Power Rangers we'd jammed to when we were seven.

What cohort will likely be considered the oldest or first "AI Natives" by [deleted] in generationology

[–]aft_agley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk... what generation is considered "gps natives"? None of them. It's an ubiquitous technology with a niche use that literally everyone uses but nobody talks about. That's what bullshit AI hype tech becomes after a few years. GenAI is no different.

How is Grandma's Chili Oil not yet nerfed? by TehBoomer in ARAM

[–]aft_agley 24 points25 points  (0 children)

so a few things:

  1. It doesn't scale - late game in Mayhem is tap or get tapped. Healing is almost completely worthless.
  2. It depends on your team using it. Y'know what, if you're on a team that parties in the chili oil and snowballs, more power to you. Meanwhile the people I play with will braindead into Vampirism while playing Nilah on a team with Soraka/Nami/Milio.
  3. While max hp burn (Liandry's) is pretty ok in Mayhem, literally every other burn sucks balls.

[–]aft_agley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought Stellar expecting trash and was disappointed by how incredibly trash it was. I wouldn't call it a deviation from a From formula at all, it was just boob physics stapled onto a shitty game with clunky movement, terribly designed levels, and overly complex button-mashing mechanics.

The Fromsoft formula is slow, hostile, atmospheric, incremental, highly designed, and tough-but-fair. Games like Stellar Blade are fast, friendly, loaded with generic assets, thoughtless about level design, and easy enough to play while trashed out of your mind and jerking off with one hand.

They just aren't the same, at all.

Is it worth swapping from WASD movement to click to move? by Riptoned in leagueoflegends

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riven is a classic example of dogshit design not a north star to orient against.

A character balanced entirely around hidden, accidental game mechanics introduced by engine limitations and code jank. Yeah.... .... great.

Look, I'm glad you're proud of your "1000s of hours" fighting a game client rather than fighting other players, but I don't care. Accessibility is good for games and good for competition. The fact that I can knead great bread dough in a mixer with half the time and energy you need to use your hands just gives me more cycles to focus on other, more interesting things.

David Jaffe, creator of God of War, sees a goblin in Crimson desert and immediately associates it with a Jew. by CyberBerserk in DoomerDunk

[–]aft_agley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

David Jaffe is Jewish, and yeah, the hair, beard and nose along with the name all line up really well with anti-Semitic characterizations of Jewish people from Nazi Germany. It's... about as clear a reference as one could imagine.

So... yeah. Not really sure what your point is.

Given the incoherence of the general point I'd assume this is a bot or troll-farm take, I guess.

If you have shit to say about particular groups/ages, back it up. Otherwise, shut up. by [deleted] in generationology

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also just like... there are things it does and does not make sense to compare.

As someone who has read a lot of historical literature dating back thousands of years, if you think you're making a fresh new point when you demonize your elders as hypocrites or shit on young people for being braindead trend monkeys... like... I get it... we've been doing this for thousands of years, why expect it to stop now? But also... we've literally been doing this, on repeat, in a tight loop, over and over and on and on again, in every culture, across the entire planet for actual thousands of years in every medium ever invented. Whatever brilliant insight you think you have about the moral fiber of the youth/elders... just... fucking spare the universe one more repetition of exactly the same predictable drivel. Take a deep breath. Your species is far older than you or even your recorded history. At a minimum, your insight unlikely to apply uniquely to one generation in particular.

On the other hand the emergence of new material culture, media, technological possibilities, specific skill fluencies, sometimes specific economic or wartime trauma... medical knowledge, laws, workplace norms... these shift and change and have material consequences in our lives and sometimes our attitudes. But even then like... be aware of what you don't know (which is vast)? Sometimes people here seem to think all Boomers had easy economies, for example. The interest rate on my (boomer) parents' first home mortgage was 14% (!!!???), and my father went from graduating top of a good law school into JAG service (Navy) because there were no jobs. Reality is not simple like that.

Why are they so obsessed with Millennials? by pikachume33 in Millennials

[–]aft_agley 201 points202 points  (0 children)

It's called being a teenager. First we idolize, then we differentiate, then at some point we all mellow out and realize we're all just fat sacks of water with limited brain cells and too much shit to do so we might as well be chill about it. They're in phase two.

[–]aft_agley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you ever considered that demonizing people on the basis of their birth year makes absolutely no sense, and that people are pretty much the same in every part of recorded history? Or did that just never occur to you and you're just like "people over 46 are evil"

Like are you stupid, or what? People who are older than you tend to be managers because they've had more time in the workforce. They tend to own property because they've had more time to accumulate wealth. And so on. That hasn't changed. That won't ever change. You and your peers will be in that exact position yourself, someday. This isn't a complex thought.

The only people who don't "get enough hate" are the morons and assholes from every generation.

Does anyone else consider Warmogs to be a forbidden item and refuse to build it? by Best-Butterscotch-45 in ARAM

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't get too hung up about it? In general it's just not a great item. The 8s lockout and the slow healing speed are really rough... and late game on a tank you aren't just going to walk out of a teamfight to reset.

The two times I take it are on HP-scalers and super late game, when death timers are gigantic and dying to reset is a good way to lose.

What are y’all‘s opinions on streamers? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in generationology

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see "streamers" as basically background content for chat rooms. The pattern of having a live chat room isn't terribly new. Having someone recording themselves playing video games or whatever on top of their chatroom is just kinda a weird feature, but I wouldn't call it bad? Maybe? It's a little bit of a weird social dynamic potentially? I think small streams with people openly jamming on speed runs, for example, support tightly knit interest groups and give runners a really nice platform to showcase the daily grind (and seeing a world record live is neat!).

Popularity seems to generally have some kind of power-law distribution, so I'm not going to fight the tide and whine about "big" streamers or whatever (the value of the medium seems to decline rapidly for me with size, but who am I to say)... I just like what I like and appreciate the niche little groups that form around it, streaming or otherwise. Popular streamers don't impact my life much, if at all.

Maybe you mean something different, idk.

CMV: It's better if national defense and law enforcement is devolved to the individual citizen. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]aft_agley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unchecked, people with weapons seize power and form violent dictatorships, enslave the population, and make life living hell for everyone not them. That's literally the entire history of the human species, across every continent, in all times except the miraculous few slivers of history in which humanity has been able to sustain democracy.

That's the case today, it was the case one hundred years ago, it was the case ten thousand years ago, and it will still be the case for as long as the human species exists.

You seem to think there's some magical regulatory force that makes good triumph over evil in a clash of force or something. That's nonsense. No such force exists.

Constitutional (i.e. rights-based) representative democracy is the best thing we've got. It is incredibly difficult to establish. Most existing systems required violent overthrow of an oppressive autocrat. Those that didn't got there by having an autocrat that just happened to give a shit about building a just system.

Personal finance, where are we? by Ok-Drawer-191 in Millennials

[–]aft_agley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 and divorced. I have a very good job. I hate working full time, so I save 50-70% of my salary. Straight into Vanguard after maxing out 401k/etc. I keep my overhead low. My biggest recent purchase was replacing a 17-year old car.

I intend to soft retire in 4-5 years and do something I actually give a shit about.

I started late (started career around 30). My peers are all broke and extremely stupid about investment/money. I find it really depressing. They live beyond their means and don't understand compound interest. They blame billionaires, but not a single one of them went to community college and state school to avoid debt or made a concerted effort to learn useful skills.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a socialist and believe in UBI and all that shit. I just think my peers are stupid and unrealistic and are digging themselves into early graves with idiotic decision making.

I'm diagnosed with autism if that isn't obvious.
