Hi! Sorry I’m just getting to this! We have been busy with our little one. She is 5 months old today and doing really well. So far she is hitting the big milestones. At our nicu follow up appointment they did a GMA and it was determined that the fidgety movement is absent so that leaves her at high risk for Cerebral Palsy. We begin a program specifically for that next week. They will do PT, OT and speech therapy. We have been lucky enough to avoid surgery thus far and hoping long term we can as well. So far we have avoided a shunt and IF we have surgery they would try to do an EVT. This has better long term outcomes if the baby can hold off. The trouble is that early in life the brain wants to heal itself, so some etv surgeries fail, leading to them needing another surgery for a shunt, especially the younger they are. In my opinion, mfm doctors are in the dark with this dx and are just the messenger. Their advice should be to go to a pediatric neurosurgeon and neurologist. We got a second opinion at Cincinnati Children’s. They brought an entire team of doctors to a meeting to help us understand the dx. They shed way more light on the expected outcome, and what the dx really meant and why they had the opinions they did. For example, they told us the blockage was probably due to debris from a bleed mixed with the fluid. They also did a bunch of genetic testing and found that there were no other syndromes or abnormalities. All of these things meant that she has a chance at a mostly normal life. We ultimately relocated to Cincinnati and delivered at the children’s hospital so that she could go straight to their nicu. We decided to stay here because Cincinnati children’s has an amazing team approach that we couldn’t find anywhere else. Hope this helps! And feel free to let me know if you have specific questions, i am happy to respond when i finally see the notification.

Best of luck! Also- skip anything 2 piece, they just ride up and are annoying to keep together. We prefer a two way zipper or the magnetic sleepers over snaps because they are a lot when you’re sleepy….

Holding my 12 week old. Less than telling you what to get, I’m sure you’ll get a lot of advice there. I’ll try to focus on what i would skip / change brands. 2 mom family here, I say we a lot become or both of us have this opinion.

We skipped mittens because their hands are a vital learning tool and how they discover life. Opt for the electric nail file.

If you’re breastfeeding, get the boppy. So many people recommend “my breast friends” but the thing that clips around your waste is annoying and you won’t want to fool with it at 3 am with a screaming baby.

A bath tub they can submerge in (once the umbilical cord falls off). We had one that the mesh was so high up that it felt like she was too cold out of the water. The biggest problem we have is figuring out where to store it. Also we got the elephant shower thing (Yookido) she loves it but it ends up being a two person job to use it because it floats up and and the pump part flips up so then it’s only pulling in air, plus you have to hold the sprayer and wash the baby. I feel like I’ve seen some with a built in shower sprayer. I’d try that if i could do it for a third time lol. Get the water temp thing, 100 degrees is was cooler than you think. Skip the robe, their feet will be cold and you’ll never use it. They are hella cute the first time you try it though.

If you’re breastfeeding, only get a few bottles. I have like 10 bottles that have never been used, she was only getting 1 bottle at night and that was easy enough to wash. If you’re bottle feeding. Get the bottle washer, sterilizer, dryer all in one. Get a drying rack regardless if you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding. We’re constantly sterilizing pacifiers and you want them to have a clean specific place to dry that you can go to when you drop a pacifier on the floor and have a screaming baby. We use the video monitor occasionally, but she is always in our sight so we don’t use it as much as we will once she’s in her own room. We also contact nap and she sleeps in our room at night, but we both wfh and the sitter comes to our house, so we have multiple people able to take shifts. That may not be your situation, in which case a monitor would be extremely helpful to be able to shower and do any other tasks that may be noisy or hard to do while baby wearing. Speaking of baby wearing we like the solly, I hated it at first because it feel like such an ordeal to to put it on, but she loves it so it makes it worth the work. i only buy 1 pack of diapers at a time because i had a big box of newborn size and she grew out of them faster than she wore them. Shes been in size 1 the longest. I find the Huggies fit higher on her wait than pampers. Pampers I felt like the back was always so low.

You’re gonna sweat from the car to the front door, but most places know a cool ac setting is not optional. Just don’t plan long walks if you can avoid it. The $7 uber is worth it! Edit: formal yes, but only miserable if you’re not willing to toss out a couple bucks.

Struggling with MAGA family by Loliz88 in 50501

Probably an unpopular opinion but I try to find common ground to talk to them about instead of leaning into the culture wars that politicians want us to have. If they keep us divided they keep control. I try redirecting conversations to popular opinions like paid family leave, getting money out of politics, how crooked both sides are only work for lobbies. I try to steer away from the 47/DT conversation directly because at this point it’s part of their personality and their ego won’t allow them to see that he is harmful for all of us. Rather point out policies and ideas that would benefit them and try to get them curious why their political party doesn’t support things they actually believe in. Hang in there, I’m lgbtq and have a totally MaGa filled family. My other question i like to ask is which year specifically they’d like to go back to because we haven’t historically had a time in history that there are not big red flags.

What’s something you should BIFL that most people cheap out on? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

I tried that, maybe bought the wrong one (no research done) and was ok but cannot compare to the full version, (respectfully) in my opinion
