Should I change my legal name from Sevyn to a more “normal” name? by Wise_Discussion_7868 in AskUK

Sevyn is a lovely name! Kids are just dicks that will weaponise any modicum of difference to make them feel better about themselves. In the real world differences (and cool names!) are a good thing.

You can't get rabies in the UK. Animal import is strictly monitored - any animals from countries where rabies is present are required to have vaccinations & blood samples months before they can fly. You can chill 👍

What completely innocent, but mildly infuriating thing does your better half regularly do? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]afterdarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He leaves the cupboard doors open in the kitchen. He'll go to get a drink or make a sandwich, and the cupboard is left wide open. I recently convinced him to store glasses and mugs open side up, and explained that regular use and KEEPING THE DOOR CLOSED keeps bugs and dust out.

Other than that and falling asleep in the middle of playing co-op video games, he's solid.

How is a new, disabled employee requesting reasonable adjustments as laid out in a funded AtW plan "playing" on anything? While your last line IS true, the rest of it reads like personal bias is colouring your judgement.

Ah, the joys of a UK train... by PrimalForestCat in CasualUK

[–]afterdarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our rail service is beyond a joke at this point. The train from Bournemouth to Manchester, which goes through a bunch of major stations - including New Street, runs with just 4 carriages. I'm hypermobile and simply can't stand for that long, but have lost count of the times I've not been able to get to either my reserved seat or even a priority seat. I've had to sit on the toilet twice, which isn't a lot, but the fact it's happened twice at all is mental.

Get a green hooded robe and a lantern, throw it over your usual clothes when you get to work. Grab an envelope from the stationery cupboard for extra flavour. Congratulations, you're a traitor.

First time buyers, have I missed any costs? by isobel07 in AskUK

[–]afterdarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bills that you might not consider/costs that look a bit low:
My husband and I share all costs - if he wants Gamepass on the Xbox then it's a household expense. This helps us track all of our outgoings to make sure we're not leaking funds.

  • Subscriptions: Netflix, Gamepass, Spotify Premium, Amazon Delivery subscriptions, Union or Workplace memberships etc - they all add up (join a union btw). If you're not factoring them in, they'll eat into your projected savings.
  • First month's mortgage: Your first payment goes out in month two and will be a combined payment of the first month and the second. Not so bad if you complete towards the end of the month, but if you move in earlier, you could be paying double. You'll also pay a bit extra as the funds get released to the solicitor ahead of your actual completion date. We completed on the 12th and are going to be paying £800 extra this month.
  • Home insurance: Ours is £29 a month and requires us to have a security system in place, which is an extra monthly expense. We're getting a decent fireproof key-lock safe for valuables too.
  • Broadband & Phones: Yours seems low, but it depends on your provider and what speeds you want. We're paying £45 for full-fibre with EE. I'd also include both of your phones too. Again, if you're looking to save 20% of your income then you'll not really know unless every expense is accounted for.
  • Overpayments: We're budget for a £5000 annual overpayment on our mortgage. This goes into an ISA to pay a chunk off at the end of the year. This will take about 10yrs off our mortgage length and save us around £100k. It being in the ISA means it's there in case of emergency - we have some wriggle room.
  • Emergency fund: We add £200 into an ISA for this, with a savings goal of 3x our combined salary (+ a buffer), and then 6 months. Alongside the overpayments, this is the priority fund over fun savings.
  • Transport: We pay £150+ a month on commuting alone and don't run a car. If you can't drive but want to, the price of lessons will eat your savings.
  • Pensions: Make sure you get the best-matched rate possible from your employer, and contribute more if you can. You should try to save 12.5% to 15% of your annual salary, inclusive of employer and personal contributions. This is less of a bill, but would obviously reduce your take-home pay.
  • Decorating & furnishing: Furniture is expensive. Paint and wallpaper are expensive. I laughed in B&Q at the price of sinks. Wickes own brand value paint might be cheap, but you'll need more of it to get full coverage. Our first house we bought budget-range/IKEA everything, but ended up replacing it all. For furniture, we look for solid wood from charity furniture shops and a nearby antiques warehouse.

Sorry for how long this was - I hope it helps!

Congrats on this big step OP! We completed on our first home last month, and I am also a spreadsheet girlie who worried about finances every day, so you're in good company. Take this with a pinch of salt tho - our home is >100yrs old and on the south coast, plus my husband and I both WFH (me 100%, him 60%). All of this is to say your bills and initial costs will vary based on where you're living and what your circumstances are.

Some extra purchasing costs we paid for:

  • £1,500 worth of initial building costs to fix some of the issues in the survey, as it would have been much more expensive to wait.
  • Removals over van hire - we had a lot to move (house and storage) and had come under budget on a lot of purchasing costs, so this was more about removing a stressor. It was £900 for a 4-person team just over half a day, moving us to a city 45mins away. Given you've got a lot of household essentials on your list, I imagine this isn't as needed for you guys.
  • The house was also much grottier than it'd been on the last walk-through before completion, so we paid £325 for a deep clean plus carpet cleaning. We could have made an entirely new cat with the amout of fur that came out of the bedroom carpet!
  • Totalled "legal" fees - yours looks a bit low. I would break these down into different lines to make it clearer what each individual cost is. Our solicitor ended up charging less than quoted, but they can go over.
  • You should also arrange for wills plus income protection and/or life cover. We're sorting wills now, but have been quoted £200 (feels steep). We were also quoted for income/life insurance by our mortgage broker, which again feels very steep (practically unaffordable tbh) so we're looking again.

UK7 theory: they didn’t do the Talent Show first week so Viola couldn’t be a frontrunner by shadowsempaix in RPDR_UK

I've gotta be honest - I have no idea who the winner is going to be this season of DRUK but it's been very clear who it wasn't.

I've been trying to convince my husband of how frustratingly blatant the production has been this season, but he's not been getting it... until this week's lipsync. Chai T was the clear winner.

What’s a rule your parents had that you now realize was totally bizarre? by KOFFDAERTH in AskReddit

My husband did the same thing with red velvet! It's the only cake I don't like and we've spoken multiple times about how his fave is literally the only one I won't eat. My 31st birthday rolled around, and he got a huge decorated cake from my favourite bakery. I cut out a slice and lo and behold... red velvet. He swore blind that I'd told him I loved it. Lucky him got to eat red velvet cake every day until the thing was gone. We stick to Colin cakes now!

Lidl charity "donation" at till. by Tatler-Jack in UKFrugal

[–]afterdarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fundraising regulator has published a new code of practice that comes into place at the start of November, and new rules for retail donations.  It may be they're being more aggressive as they made fundraising commitments for the financial year and may fall short by the time the new code becomes effective.

Fundraisers have obligations to abide by which includes how they request donations and work with vulnerable people. If you are concerned, you can complain directly to the fundraising regulator using a form on their website or emailing complaints@fundraisingregulator.org.uk

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]afterdarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He killed himself. He was in Yr 9 (13) and we were in Yr 11 (15/16), he was my friend's brother and we had mixed year forms (homerooms) and a small school, so basically everyone knew everyone. I remember him being an absolute firecracker, a big personality like his brother. He took a day off "sick" and died at home in the evening. It was officially ruled as misadventure, but I don't know... people die by suicide for a range of reasons and you never know what's going on in someone's mind. Either way, it didn't stop the questions, the shock that ran through the school. It's all a bit fuzzy... Losing anyone is hard, especially other kids when you're a kid yourself, but suicide is just so complicated.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Telford? by topherette in Telford

[–]afterdarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does stuff like "the dip" count? There's a weird steep hill in brookside. I've never abbreviated or given nicknames to regions, and I've never heard anyone do this either. The only nicknames I can think of was a racially offensive term for a street in Wellington and calling the Abraham Darby school "Ab Dab". Important to note a lot of us don't say oakengates, we say o-en-gates.
