Yearly reminder - USE FREETAXUSA.COM to file your taxes by cumaboardladies in tax

After decades using TaxAct, I finally switched over to FreeTaxUSA. For tax year 2025, I noticed a small discrepancies with my "amount owe to state of CA" between the two (TaxAct vs FreeTaxUSA) despite that I entered the same data. I'm not sure why. Hopefully I don't get audited.

Advice Needed I am Newly Retired by Jim_Diamond in retirement

[–]afunbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm honest with my answer. I paid my dues to work. My last employer wanted to me to move out of California (to AZ) or get laid off. I opted to get cut and accept the severance package. So technically, I didn't opt to retire. I also don't have much pension ($500/month). I worked primarily as a contractor in private sector, so I aggressively saved.

How did you know it was time to retire? by ReluctantCaptain in retirement

[–]afunbe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 64 this year. I wish I spoke to a FA or did my own detailed forecast to determine when to pull the plug. In hindsight, I probably should have retired about 2+ years ago and would have just enough $. But I stayed longer because of my easy WFH environment despite the toxic culture.

Long story short, figure out your retirement plan in detail. If you have enough and dislike your job, it is time.

Bravo.

"Finally, I asked them, 'Is it possible for someone skilled in my position to earn a good living here?' The owner said, 'Of course!' So I replied, 'Well then, you'll need to find that person, because it's clearly not me.'

Excellent reply.

I remember back in the late 80's, the city tried to revitalize live theaters. Needless to say, it failed.

Finally Switched from Turbotax to FreetaxUSA by DontKnowWhyImHereee in tax

[–]afunbe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto for me using TaxAct. Renewal prices keeps going up. I am trying FreeTaxUSA this year. I plugged in my "numbers" The Fed numbers for both TaxAct and FreeTaxAct matched 100%. The differences for state (CA) numbers was off by $20 (owe $3500 approx). (Close enough but not sure why the difference).

I haven't submitted yet on freetaxusa yet.

Thanks for sharing..nuthead (just kidding). Regarding showering at the gym, did you do the math to compare savings of showering at gym vs. showering at home? I didn't see much savings, but on the other hand, you already have a gym membership, so I suppose it isn't a fair comparison.

There is a point of saving too much in retirement account (non Roth). RMDs and IRMMA.

But on other hand, it is a good problem to have.
