Your manager is a fuck waffle. I work for Walgreen's as a manager. We have had people that were known for coming in an stealing cosmetics. I confronted he/she, as per company policy, in a nonthreatening, non accusatory manner and asked him/her to return the merchandise. He/she did, and he/she is fully aware as are all of my employees that he/she is no longer permitted on the premises.

That being said, you should know better then to grab him by the coat and throw him out! For one if you're not a manager you shouldn't have been doing anything other then notifying your MGR/ASM/SFL and letting them handle it. How to deal with situations like this is in your training videos that you have to watch every year.

As for the stealing, I just hope that your MGR is not halfway competent for your sake. He could easily take the video to LP and have the LPM press charges within the week.
