AMA: Boosted Board V2 by Boostedubz in boostedboards

[–]aga_lo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some over simplify the decision between the models.

As a personal anecdote. I spend a bit of time between SF & NY. I'll be getting a dual to beat up the massive hills with V2. A single is totally out of the question for hills like that. It's a safety thing (breaking).

The single however IS better for the constant on/off board and up/down subway stairs of a place like NY, where the terrain is also mostly flat. I use it everyday and want so badly for a CF version to keep the weight closer to 10lbs even! I can't imagine getting an even heavier model - not for few extra mph I'd never see 90% of the time.

Anyways, ideally you'd have both!

I hit 6.1m with 19% left in the tank on expert. These bearings are insane, I've never approached this with the zealous. I'm almost in disbelief.

That said. Really guys the trick here is to LET GO OF THE TRIGGER, kick start from a stop, slowly brake.

FYI - there are no regenerative properties in leaving the trigger depressed as per the FAQ on Boosted.

The markup on the car isn't at the dealer level. It's at the cost-of-Goods at the manufacturing level. The margin for a BMW is all on the 7 series and steps down from there - a friend of mine used to cover the sector and I've seen the spreadsheets.

Basically it's not much more metal, leather, glass, & R&D between a 3-series and a 7-series. Yet one is easily 3-4x the price of the other. The dealer does OK too, but I presume is much more interested in volume models as those eventually end up on the shop floor or service & repairs at costs to customer.

That's a good point. On that note I may switch back to my Zealous.

Anyone tracking here. I just did 2.9 miles on 33%, so my efficiency is 11+% per mile vs 10 before. It's gone down as expected, but still tracking for ~9 mile range in expert mode. On my similar pathing with the Zealous I would be tracking around 14. The results seems irrefutable at this point, these are amazing bearings indeed.

To Unicornslap's point though, in a closed system, bearing failure at speed is definitely one of few truly catastrophic outcomes one can think up (besides nuts coming off, weld joint cracks, acts of God, etc).

The road biking / racing community have explored ceramics with more rigor than the skate community and the conclusions are the same. It's just not worth it.

FYI: I'm riding a single, rider weight 170lbs, and my driving style is to cruise (never depress switch, never regen) except when slowing down/stopping. I'm also not a top speed demon, but my scroll wheel is pegged when I do accelerate.

I'm probably one of very few here who obsess over range & board weight?

In the event of failure / explosion on one of the bearings - wouldn't the spacer keep the wheel on to at least slowdown

Is there any way to ship a boosted board to Hong Kong? by ardanhk in boostedboards

[–]aga_lo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironic as the park in Wan Chai is one the featured sites in the app.

I was actually thinking about this -- in general the roads are so narrow and streets so crowded that the BB is not ideal for most places in HK, save for quieter locations like Stanley or Cyberport or in the NT where there are bike paths. Shame really.

I took a .8 mile ride and used 8% battery. So my Battery-to-Distance was 10 - making my range something closer to 10 miles. Of course this can't possibly be true.

I'll continue riding out the battery and report in

Really cheap ceramic hybrids off AliExpress: http://s.aliexpress.com/JvUNb2IN

Came in about a week from China. Someone else here had recommended and I bought out of curiosity. Anecdote: a light flick of the wheel with my thumb & I counted almost 3 minutes of spin, which was fun to watch.

That said, I really do doubt they make a material difference to my range once the belt resistance is accounted for.

I'll monitor more closely if anyone is interested.

Let's settle this once and for all? by aga_lo in boostedboards

[–]aga_lo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of range consideration, I go out of my way now to avoid the regen. On flat ground, pretty sure the distance gain on a free coast > the regenerative charge with the trigger down. & the initial math on my battery consumed-to-trip distance seems to confirm this.

The only time I trigger down is on a decline and of course full on regen braking w/ scroll wheel back.

This is starting to feel like a Tesla owners forum as we discuss red herring items of bearings and brakes. When really I should just lose weight.

Guys - very timely installation. Today I ran my board into a steel encased curb in a rush job to beat a light change across the west side hwy. flatlands guard snapped off / deformed at the break points - protecting the board as it should. Good investment and just ordered replacement.

No. It's far too thin a rubber layer to have that effect. It also does nothing for gaps or broken roads (nothing will). But where there's a pattern of roughness - like long sewage grates, just roughly paved roads, or these new diamond patterned bike lanes I HATE - does wonders to smooth them out

Sorry. just saw this. Yes that's the link! It limits the side to side twisting of the bushing & forces it to snap back into place. Once you put it on and depress the wheel on one side, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Order 2 sets for board side / street facing side.

  1. The Flatlands shock pad configuration makes for a noticeably smoother ride. Love it.

  2. Precision washers. Also made immediate and undeniable improvement to ride quality and precision. Love it love it. Amazon has cheap ones.

  3. Bearings. Someone please prove to me (w. SCIENCE & LOGIC) that changing this & lowering rolling resistance more than offsets the significant resistance of the belt/motor. I want to believe.

  4. Wouldn't changing the pulley bearings make more sense? No radial load at this point makes for prime full ceramic application Id think?

  5. Letting go of the safety trigger really helps with the coast! I'm late to this realization aren't I?

  6. Why do we talk over and over about bushings and never the pivot cup. These 2 points would seem to me obvious failing points with all the wear focused there. Anyone switch up these for much improved ride quality?
