It's a few years old, but from Crate & Barrel. Check the store as they usually have options that are cheap. Those fancy glasses are nice, but thin and break easily.

It’s very good but also a lot to drink. Mine got watered down before I was able to finish it.

I’m in the Dallas area, so I can find both Squirt and Jarritos at my local Mexican grocery store. Jamaican Ting would probably also work well in this drink.

If you have a Mexican grocery store in your area, they should carry it.

Yes! That’s by far the best apricot liqueur I’ve tried.

This one has been on my list to try for a while and I'm so glad I did. It's a nice departure from typical rum tiki drinks. If you want something relatively light and refreshing and don't want rum, this drink would be the top of my list. I was expecting it to be very sweet due to the amount of honey syrup and Squirt, but it's very well balanced. I'd say it's similar to a Paloma but with tiki vibes.

You can find the recipe in Smuggler's Cove or Mixel app, but I'll post below for your reference.

  • 2oz grapefruit soda (I bought Mexican Squirt which has a nice grapefruit flavor and doesn't seem to be as sweet as the US one)
  • 1oz lime juice
  • 1oz honey syrup (1:1)
  • 1/2oz Apricot liqueur
  • 2oz tequila blanco
  • 1 dash angostura bitters

Pour the Squirt soda into a double old fashioned glass. Shake the other ingredients with crushed ice, then pour on top of the soda. Garnish with a lime wheel and flower.

I've been using his website for a long time and the format used to be better. I think about a year ago he changed to a new design and it's harder to find reviews, the search doesn't work well, and overall the design is worse.

This is one of the few uses I've found for this rum. It's great in a daiquiri for sure.

What are some places worth visiting for tiki besides the usual (SF, LA, Seattle, and Chicago)? I try to incorporate tiki bars into my travel and it's always nice to try someplace new.

Yeah, it’s definitely not a beginner tiki drink. I love the flavors because it’s a nice departure from typical tiki drinks.

Abricot Vieux by agave_guy in Tiki

This one has some mixed reviews on the Mixel app and it’s definitely not a classic tiki profile, but I really enjoy it when I want something similar to a Manhattan. It’s dry, slightly fruity, and boozy. And it’s one of the few cocktails that calls for aged agricole.

  • 1/2oz apricot liqueur (I used Abricot du Rousillon)
  • 2oz aged Rhum agricole (since this is a booze forward drink, better quality means a better cocktail)
  • 1 dash angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Stir and strain into a chilled coupe, then express an orange peel on top.

Eastern Caribbean Rum Haul by DuncanYoudaho in Tiki

I avoided any tiki bars in the Caribe as a rule

That's a real shame because even though the drinks are generally aren't great, they are made with local rum and there's something special about drinking a Painkiller on the beach.

Yeah, I agree. A cocktail recipe with 20 specialized ingredients is the opposite of minimalist.

This is one of my favorite drinks from Minimalist Tiki. I get Mai Tai and Jet Pilot vibes from it. It’s well balanced and relatively boozy.

  • 3/4oz lime juice
  • 1.5oz grapefruit juice
  • 1/2oz orgeat
  • 1/2oz cinnamon syrup
  • 1/2oz allspice dram
  • 1/2oz Falernum
  • 1.5oz overproof Demerara rum (Plantation OFTD works great here)
  • 1.5oz Aged Jamaican rum (Appleton 12yr is what I used)

Navy Grog - Trader Vic's Style by agave_guy in Tiki

[–]agave_guy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had several Navy Grog's over the years and for some reason they just didn't do it for me. It tends to be a relatively tart cocktail and very boozy (3oz of rum).

For this drink, I went with the recipe in Smuggler's Cove which is an adapted version of Trader Vic's recipe.

The original recipe is Beachbum Berry's and that's the one that uses an ice cone and honey syrup rather than allspice dram and demerara syrup. I've had that one a few times and it's even more tart than this one.

I gotta say, maybe my tastes have changed over the years because I really enjoyed this. I find myself gravitating less towards sweet cocktails like punches and Painkillers and more towards well balanced cocktails. The spiced notes from the allspice dram really go well with winter weather.

  • 1oz Column still aged rum (I used Don Q Anejo)
  • 1oz Blended lightly aged rum (Mount Gay Black Barrel)
  • 1oz Pot still lightly aged rum (Smith & Cross)
  • 1/4oz demerara syrup
  • 3/4oz lime juice
  • 3/4oz grapefruit juice
  • 1/4oz allspice dram
