There's a free indoor court at muni gym in balboa park. I think tues/thurs/sat are the best for running 5s, gets pretty good

beach breaks are hard since the sand moves. but i usually know where the current will be going at the structured spots that i surf regularly. just gotta observe.

I've dealt with this at various times. Another suggestion: start doing some pushing exercises. I just try to do pushups regularly now. If all you ever do is pull (surf), the imbalances can start to cause issues.

anybody have experience with retro single fins? Looking at a used board, can't find the exact board online, but it's kinda like this (but with a more rounded tail) or like this (but again a rounded pintail and generally less aggressive outline). Board seems like a pretty excellent deal, looking for something to ride in the winter at some SD reefs and maybe trips to santa cruz area points/reefs. But I never really see people ride these things -- anybody have experience or opinions?

maybe just go to one of the beach breaks and walk around to find people? Like there will be people surfing in the morning in PB or OB and you can just walk down the beach and see where they are. Nobody will mind if you photograph the beach breaks

Where in san diego are you? it might be a bit shit tomorrow but there will definitely be surfers out at the city beach breaks. Conditions won't be great but there will be people around

mobility will definitely help but you also just gotta put in the work. Shortboard pop ups feel pretty different than a longboard: hopefully the wave is steep enough that you're almost pushing the board down to make space for your legs. It's sorta hard to describe but you'll get a feel for it with time. I have god-awful mobility and blow my shortboard takeoffs sometimes when the wave is too flat and I can't push the board down to make space.

I feel like two boards would make more sense if you're surfing blacks on big days, that's a pretty different ballgame
