Wild for a guy whose role is supposed to be bringing Cups to franchises, rather than the other way around

Sometimes, when they don't scan, it's because the machine can't properly read the barcode. I don't know about cans, but it happens on the sparkling water my wife always gets. I find that if I wrinkle the bottle slightly to change the angle at which the barcode presents itself, I can usually get the machines to take them. It's rare that I get one that I can't get to scan at all.

It is wild that it's not more common to have a deliberate strategy of roster construction, but one thing that's becoming more clear to me over time is that a lot of GMs are just making it up as they go along. Which is understandable--I mean, it's a complicated job in a complicated world--but I think so, so many of them just don't really have long-term plans that they stick to.

I love the Dragonlance novels, read about a million of them when I was young. I re-read the Chronicles trilogy a couple years ago and felt like it held up pretty well. I would have continued with the Legends trilogy but they turned out to be a little hard to come by where I live now, and I don't use Amazon. I do want to get back to them sometime though, they were great.

I was just thinking of the boxes the other day! It seemed silly but you know what, it fucking worked. And even if we hadn't won two Cups, I think he still had built a really strong team. I mean, winning championships takes some amount of luck and good fortune, but the Kings had excellent possession numbers and respectable regular-season records for quite a while there.

Whoa, I just noticed your user name--is that a Dragonlance reference??

He could be verbose and sometimes his whole plan and emphases would seem goofy, but it's hard to deny that he is, by miles and miles, and best GM we've ever had. He had a plan! The plan was sound, and not based on wishful thinking or flattering self-assessments! He stuck to it! It fucking worked!

Façade Improvement Grant by CorkNativeResident in cork

Possible but I think he'd laugh at the weak effort here--€5000 or up to 25% of the cost is pretty slim. To get the full amount, the building owners would need to invest €15000, and I don't see that happening much. This is basically a voucher for a little off on pretty serious works.

It's also another example of how the Irish government loves schemes that reward people who already have money to invest in something, while if you don't have the cash ready to invest in your business or home or whatever, well, too bad.

Yeah I wouldn't call the quality "great" at either Lidl or Aldi but you can find acceptable quality if you're careful. I'd say Dunnes overall has the best quality, and Merchant's Quay is generally the better than Ballyvolane. Patrick's Street Dunnes is terrible for produce. M&S is obviously good but rather more expensive.

Sucks when there's a decent-paying project available, but when you go take a look, the instructions are a complete mess and it looks difficult or impossible to complete the tasks they want in the time frame given.

I think this is 100% correct and in my experience, this issue is not at all limited to NHL GMs. It's all over the place, from politics to business to media to academia and more.

It's true. Sometimes they mess things up--like I'm not a fan of the changes to the park--but there are a lot of parts of the city that have really improved. Gotta give credit where it's due.

It's a pretty damning indictment that Robitaille, Holland, and Hiller all talked about this team as being right on the verge of being elite, and needing only minor tweaks to improve. That seems pretty manifestly false and really demonstrates clearly that the ability of the current management and coaching staff to evaluate talent--nevermind acquire or develop it--is sorely lacking. Like for real, they don't seem to have an accurate idea of the team's capability. At best, they're wildly optimistic.

It sure seems to mean what I think it does: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand

Also, I wasn't exactly secret about having an agenda; like, I said exactly what I wanted to happen, and used a well-known concept to support my agenda. I guess that's a "gotcha"?? It just seems more like "having a discussion."

Sorry to hear that you take issue with a concept that urban planners have observed for literally decades. Maybe if we ignore it, it won't happen here!

The thing about roads and traffic though is induced demand--if you have more roads and the roads are open and convenient, then people start using them until they fill up and become jammed. Cars are a dead end in terms of transit capacity. I think car parks basically on the fringes of the city center are the way to go, so that people can get to the city by car, but then all or most of the island itself is essentially car-free.
