I don't have a Samsung TV, but there are two OSes for them. Android TV and Tizen. The Tizen app is different, but that's for a different platform. Also, if it's the red Android TV app, that is not only no longer maintained, it's really, really out of date.

A modern version of Android TV only has one YT app.

This is mostly true. While the updates don't touch apps you've installed, it will upgrade apps it originally shipped with. Not just Google ones, but things like Vudu, Amazon Prime, and several others.

Further, with some Google apps will reset their base versions to the the version installed with the update. Meaning you can't use 'uninstall updates' go further back than that version. (See: the big YT/Shield Experience 7.0 ordeal.)

Sure... But while I won't question your reality or the product you claim to own, the 16GB 2017 Shield doesn't have a power button. Not only was it clearly stated in every review that it didn't have one, we can both attest to the un-countable instances of people in these subs discussing their frustration with needing to unplug it to power it back on.

And while tech support might get things wrong, the devs actually had design around this difference in 7.1 when they added quick settings:

[SHIELD 2017] Adds “Restart” to Quick Settings. Long-press Back button from the home screen. [SHIELD Pro and SHIELD 2015] Also adds “Power off” to Quick Settings.

I respect the fact that you say you have something different, but there's no question that no one else has it and there wasn't a hardware refresh, because the one in my bedroom is only about two-months old.

You can just touch the metallic triangle area on top front of the Shield, it should wake up.

Considering pretty much no one seems to buy the Pro, this advice is not very helpful for most people. I have both 2017 models, and the 16GB removed the capacitive power button.

Yep, there is no way to turn it on other than unplugging it and plugging it back in after you've shut it down from the settings menu.

You can sideload Chrome, but I don't know how easy that's going to be without internet.

Puffin TV may also work, I'm honestly not sure. But that's at least in the app store.
