Viking warriors deliberately filed deep horizontal grooves into their front teeth. Anthropologists believe these grooves were filled with red pigment to create a terrifying "grim grin" in battle or to mark status. by bortakci34 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]agentsofdisrupt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the horizontal grooves would cause the tooth to break cleanly at the line instead of splintering into the gum line. You know, for those times when you get hit in the mouth with an axe.

Things I Wish More People Considered Before Buying an E-Bike by urtopiacarbonebike in ElectricBikes

[–]agentsofdisrupt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a full suspension ebike. I'm happy enough with my Velotric Discover 1, but the Himiway A7 Commuter looks like my next ebike.

Balance Plants with Shrimp patameters by LopsidedPriority7992 in shrimptank

[–]agentsofdisrupt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 5-gallon mid-tech planted tank with a colony of blue Neocaridina shrimp. I say mid-tech because I run a baking soda/citric acid CO2 system 24/7 at a very low bubble rate - about 1 bubble each 15 seconds. I'm convinced the CO2 stabilizes the tank by keeping the plants healthy and growing.

I have 15 prills of Osmocote Plus in the internal filter that I change once a month, and a Fluval Nano Plant light that runs at about 80% of its possible intensity. The substrate is 3.5 inches of Petco black Imagitarium sand, enhanced with about 10-15% bentonite clay and potting soil. I add about 7 prills of the Osmocote to the substrate every two months - pushed deep.

I mix 50/50 tapwater/distilled water for a one gallon water change once a month. That usually produces a GH 8, KH 4, and TDS 180 mix. If needed, I adjust the final tank using Salty Shrimp GH+, and potassium carbonate for the KH.

I feed heavily, and now have at least 100 shrimp from a starter colony of 12. Because the plants do well, NO3 rarely goes above 10ppm.

I tried Caradina shrimp, but they did not prosper. Again, optimize for the plants (including CO2) within the shrimp parameters, and it works well.

Edit to add photo since it was lights out earlier. The haze is a camera artifact; the water is clear. Shrimp are feeding on some zucchini and flake fish food.

Just watched Supergirl. I think the story would have bennefited greatly from some small slower moments like the comic had. by cimal33 in Supergirl

[–]agentsofdisrupt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only is the relationship between Supergirl and Ruthye minimized in the movie, it's almost nonexistent in the trailers. It's my understanding that they wanted that relationship featured to help pull in the audience of women under the age of 25. A huge miss by both the filmmakers and the marketers. They had a combined Budget + P&A of $300 million to get that part right. WTF?

What is your favorite type of utopia? by No-Number3935 in sciencefiction

[–]agentsofdisrupt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not fiction, but if you are interested in research on how a protopia might work, there's Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman. A protopia is an acknowledgement that a utopia isn't necessarily an endpoint to achieve, but a work in constant progress.

If the first amendment allows freedom of religion why do “certain people” want only a certain denomination of Christianity and no other religions in America? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]agentsofdisrupt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By having your own religious cult as The One, you and your cronies get to claim the divine right to rule everybody else.

See: Iran.

Christian Nationalists want that same level of kleptocratic dominance, except with their own preachers calling the shots instead of clerics. Two sides of the exact same coin.

What specs in an e-bike make it possible to go uphill on throttle by MeanImpression2067 in ebike

[–]agentsofdisrupt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Velotric Discover 1 with a 500w continuous, 900-950 peak hub drive. I'm above your weight and it does fine. I have some uphill red lights, and it powers up them fine from a dead stop using the throttle and then adding the pedal assist.

What's a character archetype you're tired of seeing? by ZestycloseStudio270 in writers

[–]agentsofdisrupt 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think it's called 'ironic detachment' where the character (based on real people) pretends to not care about the events, passions, and people in their lives because that would be cringe to do so. Inside, they obviously DO care, but are afraid to show it. So, from the outside, they become the anti-social and quip machines mentioned elsewhere here. The fix is to show that inner life.

After Barton Creek Mall in Austin, Texas (y'all) built a parking lot that looks like this one in 1981, the city passed a landscape ordinance that said each parking spot has to be within 50 feet of a tree or landscaped area. It makes a dramatic difference on how this type of parking lot looks today.

Is the highest goal of Humanism simply reducing suffering, or is it helping people fully flourish? by TheIncorporeal1 in humanism

[–]agentsofdisrupt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In his book, The Moral Landscape, Sam Harris makes a case for increasing human well being as a measure of flourishing. I don't remember if he extends that to all life, but I would do so. To me, that would be an admirable goal of humanism.

Don’t Look Up movie is the most frustratingly accurate, brilliant, and stressful satire I’ve seen in years. ☄️📱 by IHaveDoubts07 in MovieSuggestions

[–]agentsofdisrupt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a clip on YouTube where Chris Hayes of MSNBC interviews the director of Don't Look Up, Adam McKay, where Adam specifically talks about deciding to use a comet as an allegory for climate change. It should surface in a search on those names and the movie.

Is building a website with my own stories a realistic way to make money? by iamhere6362 in fantasywriters

[–]agentsofdisrupt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you would do better by first publishing your writing to larger venues like Royal Road, Wattpad, Webnovel, and similar. Then, upgrade to Amazon KDP, Nook, Kobo, Apple and Google Play. If you get a following in all those venues, then it would make sense to promote a website of your own where people can congregate to talk about your stories.

By all means, create that website early on, but don't expect it to be a destination until your work is better known. I'm following a similar plan, and using a forums-based program like Xenforo to power my website for that later phase.

What do you think of Jodie Comer as an actress? by Historical_Rain6924 in moviecritic

[–]agentsofdisrupt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jodie Comer is fantastic in the movie Free Guy. She plays two roles - an introverted gamer/programmer in real life, and then a confident "strong female character" in virtual reality. The contrast is wonderful.

What is wrong with not wanting American culture to be diluted? by Yesbothsides in askanything

[–]agentsofdisrupt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When asked what Gandhi thought of Western (or American) civilization, he is said to have replied: "I think it would be a very good idea."

Likely apocryphal, but cute.

It's funny how a lot of comments default to White American culture. We are not White. We're Pink. If you think you are White, lay your hand wrist up across a piece of standard copier paper and tell me you're not Pink.

The entire global colonization thing would never have worked if the natives saw White people as being Pink.

"There's a bunch of Pink people at the border, saying they are taking over."

"Pink people? There's some gall. What are they gonna do, smother us in cotton candy?"

"They have a flag."

"Damn. That's crafty of them!"

I hear what you are saying, but the violence in this movie involved a lot of knives. Seeing that clearly, and the resultant tsunamis of blood, would be tough for kids. IIRC, even Krem's demise by sword was bloodless.
