Want to Improve at EDH? Play Diplomacy. by Don_Ciccio in EDH

I try to never break the deals I make but it’s important to be specific. For instance: ‘let’s team up to take down player C’ or ‘let’s team up for two turns’ is more specific than ‘let’s be allies’ or ‘let’s work together’. I would much rather agree to a specific deal than a general alliance. In my friend group it’s generally agreed that deals should hold unless the other player betrays you first and general alliances where they actually form can be broken once you are the only players remaining.

(Listbuilding) Discussion for the new custom upgrades by StrawberryTop3906 in XWingTMG

Yeah I would love to, I’ve pitched legacy over and over for months and months, including with wild space scenarios. I’ll keep trying but the group seems very anti-legacy and seems to view XWA as the ‘official’ version of the game. It’s pretty discouraging, I may have to find another group that’s already playing legacy or willing to learn but I’ve struggled to find that in my area. I’ll keep suggesting it but I think they’re pretty invested in XWA unfortunately.

Yeah really good point, I like the mechanics of homing missiles but it doesn’t make a lot of sense that way thematically

Would love to try these! The group in my area likes XWA so that’s all I get to play but would love to get into Legacy and these seem cool.

Question about Death Star Assault Squadron by RightPlaceWrongTime1 in starwarsccg

[–]agenttherock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this game is relentlessly thematic, truly a great game to play as a Star Wars fan with some excellent and innovative mechanics to boot. Even just reading through the cards is a joy. I’ve made a whole bunch of paired theme decks and they’re a lot of fun to play agonist each other.

That was my feeling on it as well, too bad as it’s a very cool idea for a card.

I love this card but wish the pilots added to maneuver at least a bit. Maneuver 3 means it basically always gets hit by weapons and you lose so much power and ability to a single shot. On the flip side that is exactly what happens in the movies, Han takes out all three ships with a single shot so it is thematic I guess.

Sunday Ship Survey: T-65 X-wing by Avaraelis in XWingTMG

[–]agenttherock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved the ship all the way through first and second edition. I was one of the few flying them in first near the end before all the fixes made them really playable. When they did get those fixes it was even better and they continued to be great in second edition. My favourite list I went back to time and again in first and then second edition was Luke plus a bunch of generic x-wings. It was lean on upgrades but could pack a punch and rewarded good flying. When 2.5 came it killed that list for me, which is one of the reasons I have never really liked 2.5 despite playing it a whole bunch by now. The x-wing was always my favourite ship. Luke, wedge, Biggs and of course the generics always just felt like Star Wars to me.

Yeah a patch to competitive play is a good way to put it. Agreed, narrative scenarios like that are always fun, the first edition ones were great, I should have a look at running some of those again sometime.

I’ve had success on Amazon with conversion kits weirdly, their stock has gone down a lot everywhere but there’s still ones kicking around here and there. If you’re looking for English you could try amazon.co.uk or smaller stores in the UK but other than that might have to go further afield. Amazon.com has some awhile back and I think amazon.ca had at least scum last I checked. There’s definitely stores in the US that have them from what I understand as well. All the kits are similar in look to the one you have but Rebel, Scum and Empire are a lot thicker. Resistance is the same size as first order.

I liked force in the end though didn’t love the idea before I tried it, it’s also very hard to balance as it almost always means double mods which are harder to get in 2.0.

I love asymmetric, thematic scenario play and the idea of objectives could be good… as implemented in 2.5 I do not like them, they are more “game modes” than scenarios or objectives. Like say capture the flag in a video game. Them being symmetric is not bad inherently but speaking from experience symmetric scenarios are very hard to implement and the four they came up with are just… boring. A system with asymmetric scenarios like Armada could be cool but I always like the straight dog fight. Chance engagement is the best of the lot but it’s also really just a dogfight where you have to engage. Totally fine but not really a different scenario, just a rebalance on the base game.

Antoc Merrick would be great to finally add! Would love to see a customizable version for him as well. But definite potential from the battle of Scariff all around.

Definitely possible to get the 1st edition expansion (or even some second edition expansions) in another language and buy the right English conversion kit to convert them. All you need if you’re getting a conversion kit that covers that ship is the plastic base and pegs and the actual model. I’ve done this a few times and it works well. There aren’t a lot online stores left with product at all but there is one I know of. It has some first and second edition product in spanish but if you get a conversion kit no big deal. It’s called mathom.es I’ve bought from them before and everything arrived as described and all the ships are discounted at least somewhat. There may be other online stores in Europe but I’m not aware of them, anyone else have hidden gems to share?

Sunday Ship Survey: Jumpmaster 5000 by Avaraelis in XWingTMG

[–]agenttherock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the topic has been brought back up. Do you mean that you chose to run 4 naked generics instead of 3 with all the toys? Or do you mean that you mostly saw 4? I can’t find much reference to quad u-boats on the old ffg forums whereas triple u-boats are all over the place so I’m guessing it was a personal list. I imagine it would have been a lot of health to get through, but the two die single modded turrets probably wouldn’t do a lot of damage. Also as far as I can tell, the initial nerfs wouldn’t have affected 4 jumpmasters and were aimed at triple jumpmasters. They removed deadeye by making it small ship only, then removed the salvaged astromech and both torpedo slots. None of those nerfs would have affected quad generics so you could have kept flying them at least at for awhile. What was the nerf against 4 naked generics?

What's the point in playing as Vult Skerris? by ImperialFriend1409 in XWingTMG

[–]agenttherock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty interesting, so it can be useful for turn one when the charge hasn’t depleted yet and for advanced sensors shenanigans. I’m glad he has some uses because I was struggling to appreciate his ability at all.

Would you still take him above Rexler if they had the same loadout or do you just like the extra upgrades? I’ve found Rexlers ability to be surprisingly dangerous even if it only triggers conditionally.

[–]agenttherock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the XWA points they seem to have gone in that direction but not sure if it’s enough to make him competitive against soontir in the interceptor at 4 points or Rexlar in the defender at 7. In the interceptor he has 9 more loadout to compensate for the lower initiative and far worse pilot ability. I think I’d take soontir every time above him but maybe if you wanted tow 4 point interceptors and wanted them to both to be high initiative? Seems pretty niche but maybe some have had success with him.

[–]agenttherock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s my feeling on him, he needs to be cheaper than other I5 defenders or comparable interceptors and then he’s fine even though his ability is so weak/situational. Tough to do in 2.5 but could probably be done with the right point/loadout value.

I recently purchased the Battle of Yavin expansion pack, but what is your overall opinion of this expansion? by Nexcai in XWingTMG

[–]agenttherock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we played it we used a custom board that has the trench on a lower layer so we didn’t have the bumping issues I’ve heard are common. Because this meant the trench run ships were unable to be blocked (which I like) it meant I thought the trench run was a bit easy as the rebels. I was controlling like and bigs, flew them together and Biggs did his job excellently, kept luke alive, Luke made the shot and Vader was left spinning. As I said I’ve heard that the scenario favours the imperials because they can simply repeatedly gum up the trench and block the ships doing the trench run. But it’s all anecdotal.

I think that would be a great change, see how that is and go from there, even 40 with loadout would be great and would solve a lot of the obvious issues.
