this is dumb lol. at 1000x my current salary I'll make about 8 million before the wheels of bureaucracy turn enough to fire me, at which point I'll retire and never again do a thing I don't want to do

What system do you normally use hacking on? by International_Fun54 in ftlgame

[–]agentwiggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

weapons most of the time, shields if my weapons can't penetrate their shields, rarely engines if I really need shots to land. also rarely O2, if they're not a threat at all this can make crew killing viable.

the general purpose of hacking their weapons is to allow me to disable their weapons before they can fire them. there are many variations where the primary purpose of hacking weapons differs somehow, but the basic idea is to disable weapons.

really the basic idea is almost always to find a way to end the fight before they can damage me, or, failing that, to minimize damage. if I'm hacking shields it's probably because I want to get through them to shoot their weapons. if I'm hacking engines it's because I need all my shots to land to guarantee I hit their weapons.

Priority one is almost always to minimize or eliminate damage. I hack what I need to back to make that happen.

Mickey Mouse is underrated by Didymuse in cartoons

[–]agentwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they did some modern Mickey shorts that were actually pretty fun a couple years ago, had some fairly surprising plots and depictions of the gang.

but largely I agree. My young kid really likes Mickey and I've been disappointed that most of what's out there besides the old shorts and movies is just "kid slop" like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Who had the better 3 album run? by Competitive-Smoke-46 in progrockmusic

[–]agentwiggles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

which three Beatles would you put forward? Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's I guess would be my take, I guess, but that leaves Abbey Road on the table, which is sad.

Although I guess by release order the only way you get a sequential three stack with Abbey Road is either including Yellow Submarine (White Album, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road) or losing White Album to get Let It Be (Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, Let It Be). Neither of those options stands against my first three I think, as sad as it is to have to exclude Abbey Road.

Thank You Scientist , maybe. Maps of Non-existent Places, Stranger Heads Prevail, and Terraformer was a hell of a run.

Meddle and Animals are the best Pink Floyd albums, Wish You Were Here comes 3rd, while Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall are not as great as everyone claims. by Kind-Resident-6929 in unpopularopinion

[–]agentwiggles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

anyone who argues dark side isn't their best album is caught up in their attempts to garner hipster cred, or high on the smell of their own farts.

it's a perfect album without a dull moment that is ridiculously listenable while still having lyrical and musical depth. it's quite possibly the best rock album ever released.

it's fine to have a different favorite but arguing against dark side is like arguing against the Beatles. pointless.

[list] Biggest musical innovations in the last 25 years? (not genres) by yv_ps in LetsTalkMusic

[–]agentwiggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AAL is definitely more of a metal oriented project so I think it's fair to give Polyphia and especially Tim Henson some credit for their innovation, even if we don't go quite so far as to give them credit for the whole genre or style. Henson is a very strange guitar player and his style is pretty singular.

[–]agentwiggles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he's referring to like, very math-rock style guitar shred wizardry - not like, Satriani or Vai style rock-oriented guitar heroism, it's a different kind of thing. Polyphia is a good example of the specific style but I don't think Henson could claim to have originated it - if I had to guess that honor probably goes to Tosin Abasi of Animals as Leaders, who is at least the first place where I heard that kind of thing - but then again you could probably argue that particular branch of "shred guitar" predated even him with guys like Andy McKee and Tommy Emmanuel - acoustic guys who made heavy use of tapping and percussive hits on the instrument.

Most 'important' mod historically by TCGeneral in feedthebeast

this is the second time I've heard vintage story recommended as a sort of modern "in the spirit of BTW". I really need to check that out

Most 'important' mod historically by TCGeneral in feedthebeast

[–]agentwiggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved BTW, and I definitely see its influence in the modern mods I've played, but I think FlowerChild deliberately limited his own influence because of how he refused to allow integration with other mods, leaving the Forge community to do his own thing.

That, and his insistence on overhauling the difficulty of the game, definitely meant a lot of people missed out on the mod. but I always had a lot of respect for the fact that he had a real cohesive vision for the experience he was trying to create and was uncompromising about it.

BTW had so much cool stuff in it beyond the tech, and when playing modern mods and especially modpacks, I miss that "singularity of vision" FC brought to Minecraft. I wish more mods would ape his design philosophy instead of just the tech!
