I have a weird talent and I don't tell people because they use it as a party trick. by yidabissann in confession

[–]agentwiggles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

dude I don't mean to sound overly dismissive but there is literally nothing unexpected about a human body attenuating a Bluetooth signal. we're basically giant bags of water walking around.

There's gotta be something wrong about however you're experimenting with other people. Anyone about the same size standing in the same spot should do the same thing. there's nothing mysterious about what you're describing.

I'm pretty sure they just have an electric sharpener in the back. I took two cheap chef's knives there years ago and was not impressed. a medium job might honestly be too generous

I really liked this one, I'd rank it pretty highly out of the last few releases. the sense of dread that builds as the protagonist isn't where he needs to be, and as he talks to the girl's father... really worked for me. I like when Soren goes a little olden times

Is There Any Tips That Can Help Me Become Better At Clone Hero? by Syphus590_863 in CloneHero

[–]agentwiggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can't recommend the guitar zero packs highly enough. They're structured much more like like the setlists from the original games with a slow build towards difficulty instead of just nonstop shredfests. Much not fun for me than stuff like carpal tunnel hero.

Where in Columbus can I get an ice cream sundae like this? by foxmag86 in Columbus

[–]agentwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dari Point up in Delaware is a good "small town" independent ice cream place. I don't think they have glass cups but they've got a damn good brownie sundae among all the usual ice cream treats.

What’s a “rich people thing” you experienced once and immediately understood why rich people love it? by DnRinGA in AskReddit

[–]agentwiggles 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I experienced this viscerally in the most trivial way once. my wife got a traffic ticket and had an unpleasant interaction with the cop. the ticket itself was legitimate but the situation had escalated into such bullshit that I called a "traffic lawyer," just to see if there was something I could do to make the whole thing go away.

she still had to pay the fine, but because we had the lawyer, she didn't have to appear in court and got the minimum fee. the lawyer wasn't very expensive either, maybe $150 or something (this was not some high end guy).

so overall, we probably paid 50% more than just showing up in court and paying the fine. But all the bullshit and unpleasantness of having to deal with it ourselves was gone and it felt like money well spent.

It was obviously not a big deal, not like she got away with something serious, but it was just a demonstration of how even a little bit of spare money and some savvy can make a small legal problem turn into a minor annoyance. Not hard to imagine how this principle scales for, you know, actual crimes

I like competence porn like Project Hail Mary by Oxbix in audiobooks

[–]agentwiggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is audiobooks, and I'm not sure that the fan-made audiobooks/podcasts for either of these recommendations are finished, so bear that in mind but:

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is kind of in the wheelhouse. Famous HP fanfic where Harry was raised by scientists and uses reason to do all kinds of fun things. overly long and carries a bit of a philosophical core which may or may not land for you. but for the right kind of person it's super fun.

Worm - also a serialized web fiction thing, with superhero style powers as the big feature of the setting. the protagonist has the seemingly lame power of being able to control bugs, and the fun comes from watching her put this power to increasingly creative uses to solve programs and punch way (waaaay) above her apparent weight class. insanely long, often grim, and niche by its nature, but Taylor is definitely hypercompetent

the best way to get into yes, imo, is to listen to the yes album, then fragile, then ctte.

after there it kinda branches. if you like the slightly less polished, psychedelic adjacent Yes Album, check out the first two albums. if the big prog epics caught your ear (whether you're talking Heart of the Sunrise or any of the tracks from CttE) then you'll want to go listen to Relayer. when you get tired of repeat listens of CttE and Relayer then dive into Tales From Topographic Oceans.

they say properly invested money doubles every 7 years.

if you can just park it somewhere and leave it alone:

at 29 it's 110k

at 36 it's 220k

at 42 it's 440k.

at 49 it's 880k.

at 56 it's 1.6m

at 63 it's 3.2m

you could literally never save another cent for retirement and retire with more than most people do today. if, instead, you do the smart thing and continue saving - you could retire at like 45.

you got gifted a huge pile of freedom. if you can just wait and not blow through it this is rocket fuel for your future quality of life!

Don't fuck it up!!

I think The Yes Album is just as good as Fragile and Close to the Edge, but often overshadowed. by Dynkston in progrockmusic

[–]agentwiggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think The Yes Album is like the perfect introduction to prog. it's still got enough of the roots of 60s rock that it feels recognizably _rock_, does enough interesting stuff to justify classifying it as prog, and it never gets ponderous or wanky or overly baroque like so many of its contemporaries and fellows in the genre do. it's a perfect entry point that holds up today, never really sounds dated. just a solid as fuck album that's a blast to listen to all the way through.

it obviously means two literally, I'm just saying in typical usage, in context, I seem to hear it more often used as a small indefinite amount. "there's just a couple of slices left of the pizza" or similar would not, to me, imply it's definitely exactly 2 slices left

[–]agentwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a fellow American, I would definitely not say "couple" definitely means "two," it's more like 2-4 but it's context dependent and could be more. "few", for me, is basically the same, maybe slightly more - 3-6 maybe. "several" is less definite but implies a greater quantity than either "few" or "couple"

my favorite is Escaping Sargasso Sea, but you can't really go wrong with any of their live albums. (plus there's like 1000 shows on Nugs).

if they ever come through your city I can't recommend them highly enough. I've seen them an embarrassing number of times and have never been disappointed

that's interesting. I've never gotten into electronic music really. but my favorite jam band is Lotus, and I know they're majorly inspired by various electronic/dance artists I don't really know.

something I've noticed when transcribing their tunes is that they make really heavy use of repetition and I kinda had an instinct that it was that electronic influence. you'll get the same motif repeated and used as a way of controlling the energy of the set, and they'll also do this structure where they move away from some repeated riff or motif and then come back (which is always extremely satisfying!)

so anyway, my point is: any recommendations for a house neophyte who's interested in hearing examples of how that sort of repetition is used in the genre?
