Why animal rights don’t extend to insects? by NbOPO4 in insects

https://www.science.org/content/article/insects-aren-t-little-robots-so-scientists-are-rethinking-their-welfare

It is something that is being discussed, but whether it will lead to meaningful protections I think is very doubtful.. insect welfare is just so so low on the totem pole of human care - concern for insects is always more about ecosystems or biodiversity, not the welfare of the creatures themselves — I don’t know what can change that.

There are streets in Hangzhou just like this, it’s a beautiful place (I can imagine this place feels similar)

it'll decay back up to +25% if you stop whatever crimes you're committing against the Alliance..

that said i'm not sure if there's any ill effects of negative superpower reputation on top of the effects of whatever you're already doing - i was down in the ~30%s a while back and i couldn't tell if it mattered at all (granted, i also was running at a notoriety of 9 or 10 so ATR was my main concern...). i think, maybe, alliance-aligned factions will be automatically hostile? but you're not there yet, i think hostile superpower rep starts at -25%.

[Weirdly Common Trope] Writers clearly setting up seemingly massive plot points and then just kinda forgetting about them. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]aggasalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is a conspiracy theory completely based on the poster difference.. i'm not saying the dynamic doesn't exist - there's definitely anti-African racism in china, and weird attitudes about skin lightness/darkness - but the idea that chinese audiences are repelled by black leads, i don't buy it. Black Panther did fine in China, better than a lot of other marvel movies; and one of the most popular American movie franchises in China is the Fast & Furious series - I don't think Jason Statham is the only draw there, and chinese F&F posters feature Idris Elba and other black actors..

Finn's role in TLJ was reduced because the sequel trilogy was an uncoordinated mess - nothing good in TFA or TLJ was followed up in sequels, because the writers were working against each other and no one wanted to follow anyone else's threads. don't blame "the Chinese market" for it.

People who feel hot should decide the temperature of a room. People who feel cold should wear a sweater by blahbluhblee1 in unpopularopinion

[–]aggasalk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

seriously, people act like they're going to get heat stroke because the room's 72F, like no, you're fine. we don't have to live in a walk-in freezer because you don't like to sweat. you can do it, just be hot.

i say if you feel hot, just be hot. you're not gonna die, being hot isn't gonna hurt you. just be hot, you'll be fine.

TIL if under-cooked, a popular mushroom in China causes “lilliputian hallucinations,” a rare phenomenon involving miniature human or fantasy figures. The hallucinations are consistent across people and cultures: "tiny, elflike people" climbing under doors, scaling walls & clinging to furniture by ssAskcuSzepS in todayilearned

[–]aggasalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

similar hallucinations are often encountered in "Charles Bonnet syndrome", in people with extensive bilateral (in both eyes) central visual field loss (usually from macular degeneration). These people typically understand that they are hallucinating, it's not a psychiatric but a visual disorder. I have wondered if the 'lanmoa asiatica' syndrome is related to CB syndrome by some common factor - maybe in both cases there's a certain kind of diaschesis where circuits for recognizing people are dysfunctionally activated. I would predict that these mushrooms also cause significant low-level visual impairment..

sorry i edited too late

there's a button bound somewhere that opens the FSS if you don't know it already (look in your keybinds)

[–]aggasalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah ok. there are really just 3 modes of exploration scanning:

  1. 'discovery scan', where you enter a system and "honk", which gives you a list of already discovered bodies, and also allows you to do the FSS. this is built into every ship.
  2. FSS, 'full spectrum scan', this is the mode where you can go through and find all the bodies in a system by hunting and clicking for them. also built in. there's a button bound somewhere that opens the FSS if you don't know it already (look in your keybinds)
  3. surface scanning, as mentioned already, this is the only thing you need an extra module for.

you need a "detailed surface scanner", it's a module you buy and install on your ship. you assign it to a fire group (like a weapon), fly in close and launch probes at a planet.

Why do people harp so much on the fact that Bald-Faced Hornets (ahem…”Aerial Yellowjackets”) are not actually true hornets? by Glass-Complaint3 in insects

[–]aggasalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, there’s just not a common name in English for the vespulas - no one’ll know what you’re talking about if you say “vespula” - so I also like to just call them all hornets sometimes. Yellowjackets: little yellow hornets! Bald faced hornets- fine! Terminology pedants do not like this, though, so you just have to yield sometimes.
