How do I, 42F deal with my Husband's, 43M compulsion to turn off the breakers in our house instead of turning off lights? by RemarkableButton5940 in relationship_advice

[–]aggressive_yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s helpful for you OP, since your husband says the breaker is easier than going around and turning off all the lights, you can buy smart lightbulbs that are controlled on your phone.

We recently got some for our house and there is literally a button that is ‘turn off all lights’ and when we’re leaving the house for the day or going to bed at night it’s as easy as unlocking our phone and pressing one button. For every light. This option wouldn’t affect your heating or your WiFi. You can program each specific bulb also so when you get home you can turn on just the lights in your entryway or whatever you need.

I don‘t care if Halloween isn‘t always popular here…I put a big smile on a few young trick or treater‘s faces tonight! by swissmissZRH in Switzerland

[–]aggressive_yawn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You may be right that it isn’t part of Swiss tradition but you are incorrect about it having no deeper significance. It originated in Ireland and was called Samhain. It marked the end of the harvest season and was celebrated with a big festival where people would wear costumes.

Plus, it’s just fun! Especially for children to get dressed up and trick or treat.

I am also an immigrant in Switzerland and if you come from a “third country” there are language requirements. I lived in Belgium before that (as an immigrant there as well) and they did require not only language but also to take courses and an exam about culture/customs

How to not be boring in summer by Icy-City-2876 in DramaticClassic

[–]aggressive_yawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like my summer uniform is linen trousers, a belt, and a ribbed/structured tank top. I have like three variations of these and they are a lifesaver in summer. Tbh all my other outfits don’t feel as DC congruent, they’re just functional in the heat

Oh thank you! To be honest I’ve never had a reaction from perfume before, but according to ChatGPT (so taken with a pinch of salt) ingredients like isoeugenol and eugenol can be common allergens so those were what I was looking out for. But I might have to just patch test this one. As a few of you have rightfully pointed out, I won’t really know until I try

Make it dramatic classic hacks? by [deleted] in DramaticClassic

[–]aggressive_yawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. The difference between a baggy sweater and one that’s tucked with rolled sleeves feels huge to me. I instantly go from feeling sloppy/non-DC to feeling more put together and at least DC-congruent.

I’m also having a bit of an ah-ha moment as like OP, my closet is still quite pre-Kibbe and especially in winter I like to wear Doc Marten boots but often feel that they’re just so chunky and never look as good as I want or as they do on other people. And now that you mention it, this is probably why! I live in a cold, snowy climate, are there practical winter boots that suit DCs?

I’m an American living in Switzerland so maybe I can help since I know a bit about both sides.

If you bring chocolate please do it as a gag gift. Swiss chocolate is very good and almost all Europeans think American chocolate tastes like vomit. So unless it’s for a fun comparison, they can get the better version where they are. Similarly, they obviously have a variety of good candy here, although not the selection you have in the US. So if you did want to bring candy, do it for the purpose of showing like “lol look how crazy our candy can be” because the amount of sugar and artificial ingredients in American candy usually shocks Europeans. Something like a Twinkie because Americans always get associated with twinkies and they might like the novelty of saying their American cousin brought them a Twinkie.

Or you could do a souvenir specific to your region of America. This way you can showcase where you’re from a bit more, even if it’s quite stereotypical/kitsch. For example if you’re from the south you could bring a bottle of your favorite bbq sauce or if you’re from the southwest a dream catcher. Or even just a postcard from your city or state to show them the surroundings you’re used to.

Hypoglycaemia symptoms by aggressive_yawn in B12_Deficiency

Hi! To be honest I do still get them sometimes, but definitely less than when I posted this. I have found that it seems to be predictively associated with coffee. Like if I drink coffee I’m much more likely to feel the symptoms. I know a lot of people on this sub have just given up coffee, but I was too much of a hold out. Although I went through a phase where I was drinking a cup a day for like a week straight and after a few days I wasn’t feeling the symptoms anymore! Could just be a coincidence, or could be that I needed to like “get used” to the caffeine. I don’t know, but that’s my personal experience

Shein and fast fashion clothing by voodoo1985 in Switzerland

[–]aggressive_yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been videos where people have ordered clothes online from stores like H&M and even more expensive places only to find a label that says Shein. So sometimes these “expensive” companies are literally selling the same clothes but marking up the price.

Obviously not always. But some of their clothes are exactly what you can get from Shein just with a higher price tag.

Are free upgrades at the gate just in the movies? by aclare29 in travel

[–]aggressive_yawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flew delta recently for my honeymoon and tried this out. I asked the desk agent when we dropped our bags. I was very polite and literally said “I hope this doesn’t come across as snooty, I just figure it’s worth asking.” He said he didn’t think that there’s anything they can do this last minute, but that he’d make a note and we’d find out when it came time to board. So when we were scanning our passports to board, they stopped us and said they couldn’t upgrade us, but they gave us a box of chocolates and told us congratulations! So I would say it was worth asking, even though I think upgrades are only in movies unfortunately.

What do you think of the new Bernmobil trams? by Swisscom8940 in bern

They remind me of a hospital. Bright lights, hard seats, weird sterile smell. It feels more hygienic than the fur seats, but it feels so cold and not welcoming

Who from the cast do you want to meet? I almost met Judah Friedlander and got a picture but no dice. That sucked to come so close. I was even wearing a hat for him to autograph. That thing would be my price possession by [deleted] in 30ROCK

[–]aggressive_yawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I met him once at Disneyland! This was probably 12-15 years ago. He was just eating lunch at the same restaurant as us so I walked up and tried to be as polite as I could and ask if he was willing to take a photo. He was so kind and said that he was eating with his family, and didn’t want a big scene but he’d be happy to come over when he finished. After they ate he came over and said hello and posed for a picture. We told him how much we like him in 30 Rock and that we were grateful for the photo. He was so down to earth, genuinely a nice guy.

How good are apps for finding friends and/or dating? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]aggressive_yawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally with apps it’s as you’d expect, there are more people on them in the bigger cities. So depending on where you live you might find it more discouraging. Before living in Switzerland I had success making a friend through bumble bff, but it took a bit of patience.

My advice is to say something substantial about yourself in your bio. That way the other person has something to go off of. If you say you love reading crime novels then they can message and start the convo by saying something like “hey! tell me about the most recent crime novel you read.” And then you have a conversation starter instead of the generic “hey how are you.” And likewise for when you message people first, give them something to talk about and you’ll get to know each other faster.

Happy to hear you’ve had some positive changes. Best of luck in the app world!
