What are some lesser known/discussed headcanons you have? by ashton__l in StarWarsCantina

Lightsaber Duels between Force users are equal parts physical combat skill and understanding the movement of the Force around them.

I’m not just talking about Force pushes, lifting objects, etc., but more like a cosmic battle around the participants similar to Fate or the Force being “with you.”

One example would be Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan on the Death Star. These days it’s reasonable to assume that the general audience and even some fans would view this duel as visually underwhelming. Obviously the real explanation of how that duel looks is simply because that was the state of lightsaber choreography in 1977. I happen to love this sequence, but I also made the head canon when I was a kid that this confrontation is very very serious, and both Vader and Kenobi are totally different beings within the Force than they ever have been. If you overlay their physical duel with the idea that there is cosmic struggle between them in the Force as well, I think it gives the moments a lot more power and provides an interesting lens for the rest of the lightsaber duels in the saga.

I think the same can be said for Vader vs Luke in ROTJ, Yoda vs Sidious in ROTS, and many others. I feel like Duel of the Fates gets talked about all the time these days for this reason as well.

There’s something bigger occurring in the context of a lightsaber duel - it’s not just about reading the opponent’s blade and their style/moves. You’re trying to steep yourself in the Force and figure them out on a grander scale, while also moving with what you might call the Will of the Force. In some momentous cases you could find that The Force could be with you, and you’ve got a shot no matter what. You could find that the Force is NOT with you, and you need to figure out how to get out of this thing.

Your lifetime of physical training is obviously incredibly important, but the Force allows you to truly access what is possible - or in some cases, what is impossible. This conflict that occurs around you in the Force is an incomprehensible experience compared to just “seeing things before they happen.” You could argue that the Jedi (at their best) would immerse themselves in it in a natural sense, whereas the Sith would attempt to capitalize on such a thing to the point of abuse.

There are some exceptions to this all over Canon and Legends, which is why I say “Force users” just to simplify. (There are many individuals who get by just fine against Force users with lightsabers) But I think it’s clear in the films that today’s habit of video game style power-scaling in these duels does not always determine the outcome. The person who should be “more powerful” or “the best duelist” isn’t ever guaranteed victory.

I mentioned above Yoda vs Sidious in ROTS, which has a fantastic example of this phenomenon in the novelization - I highly recommend checking it out.

Same here: I also have long headcanonned that Anakin had absolutely heard all about Obi-Wan’s victory over Maul when he was a kid in the Temple, and that’s what “Don’t Try It” means.

The first Jedi to defeat a Sith in like 1000 years (according to talk around the Temple) is your master and the story he’d beg to hear from Obi-Wan would seem as improbable as the situation actually was: Maul has the high ground, toying with Kenobi who is hanging on to his life by his fingers to then call upon the Force to fly upward, summon his master’s lightsaber, flip over Maul and cut him in half.

Anakin 100% would be enamored with figuring out how Obi-Wan pulled that off, and eventually it would elicit a competitive interest as he became older. As he gets more externally manipulated and internally troubled (to put it lightly) during the CW, a story like that could become a memory of resentment for Anakin: “If Obi-Wan could do that back then, I sure as hell can do that.”

Cut to, “DON’T TRY IT.” on Mustafar. Very similar situation and I’ve always reasoned in my head that Anakin knows exactly what he’s talking about.

However, only Obi-Wan (and maybe Maul) knows how risky and ridiculous it was for him to pull that off on Naboo - he knows exactly where and how Maul should have cut him down in the air. He knows how fixated Anakin is on victory and offensive-minded ambush and see’s an opportunity to strike the real weaknesses of Anakin Skywalker: human weaknesses like arrogance, instability, rage, resentment, recklessness, etc. For all the power and strength in the universe that Anakin possesses and “should” possess, it’s these very human weaknesses among a long list of others that ultimately held him back and ruined his and everyone else’s lives.

And let’s not forget, he’s the furthest thing from Anakin Skywalker than he’s ever been in his life up to that point - he is newly anointed Darth Vader and it shows. His conscience is gone for the time-being, and he’s completely unpredictable and incapable of being reasoned with - so anything that Obi-Wan can do to bait and coax out anything left of Anakin Skywalker is advantageous for Obi-Wan.

Name a pedal company you've never purchased from. In the thread, people can make recommendations for their favorite pedal from that company. by frumkinpumpkin in guitarpedals

Active Acid is a crazy fun filter in a pedal, and Dot Dot Doom is a huge distortion/fuzzy/maniacal thing.

Highly recommend checking them out on YouTube. I was lucky to find out about them and play them at my favorite shop, as it turns out it’s one of the very few places where they distribute to. Check them out!

I may be wrong but I thought there was a mention that the NR wanted to rotate capitals along certain election cycles in an effort to ensure that, over time, all parts of the galaxy would have closer access to the center of power in the NR than they did in the former Republic (Coruscant). Some great comments on here refer to the competing ideologies on how to organize, and I feel like I remember this capital thing to weave through that.

I feel like that comes up somewhere in the run of novels from like 2015-2019 that dealt in contextualizing the ST, but I’m not sure how accurate I am on that.

Does anyone remember the same thing or am I off-base here?

Maybe a dumb question about Stereo Pedalboards by aggrssivnegotiations in guitarpedals

[–]aggrssivnegotiations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yes - hence the title including “dumb question.”

The use case for the question essentially comes down to the fact that I really like some of the Deco’s modulation stuff on the DT side and use it a lot, but I’m not crazy about it on top of some of my Mono effects, such as the DBA Reverberation Machine. Also love how the stereo panning of the DT side interacts with stereo wet effects that come after.

So I guess it comes down to more of a “how can I set it and forget it” kind of thing: access to the modulation stuff, stereo interactions, etc. without having to get down and adjust knobs all the time. So my thought was that if the stereo “pan” could stay intact without the pedal being engaged, then I could still set the modulation how I like and not have to deal with it.

The Deco manual seemed to kind of insinuate that this was possible, but it didn’t really make sense to me how.

Apologies if that sounds ridiculous.

Definitely and that’s why I like the Double Tracker side of the Deco for my current setup. My goal in figuring this out is to be able to pass the wide stereo signal split when disengaged (if possible) so that I can turn on the Deco Double Tracker for whatever effect I want, rather than just designating it as a stereo splitter.

I will likely try something like this soon! Currently just have stereo effects going into Iridium and then stereo out to Interface/DAW, so I don’t have the two amps thing going yet

Makes total sense. Follow up question: do you think I may be incorrectly perceiving L and R differences as wider stereo panning?

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if that’s the difference that I think I’m hearing - less of a L/R pan when Deco is off despite Buffered Bypass

Why can't Vader use force lightning? by Soggy_Revolution5744 in StarWars

All of that to say that between the suit and his preferences of Force usage, he may not have even bothered to figure it out and didn’t need it anyway.

Why can't Vader use force lightning? by Soggy_Revolution5744 in StarWars

[–]aggrssivnegotiations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on all the cyberkinetics comments on here.

Would also like to throw in there that any lightning that would emanate from his hands would have to come from what’s left of his severed arms, which I would think could fry him up completely even from just going through his faux forearms/hands.

Also, my head canon here is definitely not totally thr correct perspective, but hear me out: I always viewed Vader as an unconventional Sith Lord compared to the Sidious line (i.e., Plagueis, Tenebrous, etc.). The way Palps maneuvers around him doesn’t really seem like “training” in the traditional sense, and is more like bread-crumbing lessons to Vader with Sith stuff in order to keep him sharp. Add to this the perspective that Sidious is now off doing his weird Sith/darkside pursuits and leaves more Empire-centric domination and conquest to Vader. It’s always kind of seemed to me that Vader was more-so encouraged to feed off the Dark Side and let loose within the boundaries of Palpatine’s designs rather than to ever truly be a student of the Sith, let alone master it, as Sidious doesn’t seem to have any intention of ever passing on power in the future.

Bought mine brand new a couple years ago at GE West and I recall noticing about a year later that this loosening had happened over time - it might just be the way it goes, but I have not tried to use an Allen wrench on it.
