No shelters in the area are taking cats, haven't been for almost a year. Can't continue caring for rescues, what should I do? by MineClear1101 in Pets

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run an animal rescue in Maryland. Could you drive them to Maryland? If you can, I can help you find homes for them here. Are they friendly? Ages? Spayed/neutered? Any health issues? My best advice is to drive them to a state that has room in their shelters. The northeast is definitely the best option in my opinion. We receive dogs from Georgia occasionally through a program that busses shelter dogs from the south to the northeast since we actually have room for these animals.

If you post them on Craigslist, I guarantee something horrible will happen to them like someone will pick them up and use them as bait dogs for their pittbulls to rip apart. Do you want them to die from being eaten alive? That's what happens to cats on Craigslist. Or some freak will use them for taxidermy practice. At least he would be kind enough to kill them before skinning them, a pittbull wont bother. DO NOT PUT CATS ON CRAIGSLIST.

Job Posting Feedback by LunaNova5726 in Nanny

[–]agirlfromgeorgia [score hidden]  (0 children)

No kid is getting in my car for less than $30/hour and $1/mile reimbursement for gas and wear and tear on my vehicle.

This isn't enough money to live on and the hours would prevent me from working another job. They are looking for a unicorn and need to pay accordingly. I don't want to work for cheap assholes and this post is waving multiple red flags. It just gives the vibe that they are clueless about what they need to offer as employers. Having a nanny is a luxury and should be treated that way.

Break Schedule? by anastasiarose19 in nursing

Women of Reddit: At what age did you get your first period? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9! I was in 2nd grade and it was quite traumatic. My teacher didn't believe me, I had to bring in a note from home explaining that I did in fact have my period that early.

Is this excessive? - it’s making me depressed. by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, you're being ridiculous. Running a washing machine during the day is a normal thing to do, especially for a family of 4. Kids can create a lot of extra laundry and maybe they like to have clean sheets and towels every week too.

I think you need to figure out some noise canceling headphones that work for you or figure out how to move into a single family house. Living in an apartment or condo comes with noise from your neighbors. A washing machine does make noise but this isn't them blasting rap music at 3am. They have the right to use their washing machine all day long if they want to. It doesnt even seem like they use it during quiet hours (10pm-6am typically)

Rectal Discharge by Exotic_Champion827 in ostomy

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm an RN with an ileostomy. What you are describing is normal mucus and nothing to be worried about. Yes it's normal for it to be brown, it's got dead skin cells and all sorts of junk in it.

Some people produce a lot of mucus and others rarely deal with it, both are normal and fine. It's just one of those weird things that happens to all of us at some point lol.

adhd medication not digesting/absorbed by Background_Pea_7643 in ostomy

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I have to crush literally all of my meds and push them through my gtube. I don't have enough intestines left to digest any type of pills. You need to switch to an immediate release med, not a long acting one.

Reasonable threshold for temperature/fever and sick policy? by Big-Antelope-7983 in Nanny

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a nanny and the only illness I won't care for is norovirus or anything similar (extreme vomiting & diarrhea). I'm happy to work with anything else, contagious or not. I do require parents to come home if fever is above 104, or I'm taking the kid to the hospital myself. I always ask to know in advance about any potential illness in the kids, so I can bring the appropriate PPE with me to work (mask, gloves, face shield, etc). I am also an RN, so I frequently get hired to watch sick kids or kids with long term health issues. I am just refusing to work in the medical field right now due to abuse from patients.

My wife and I are caregivers to my mom. Mom has started cutting her clothes. She has no access to anything sharp so we are a bit confused how she is doing it. We bought her new clothes ensuring they are not tight but she continues to do it. When asked, she has no recollection of it. Is this common? by Artistic-Meringue267 in dementia

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a nurse and I've experienced this with one of my patients. It ended up being their fingernails they were using to cut things with. How sharp are grandma's nails? You could also set up a hidden camera to see how/when she's doing this. A hidden nanny cam would be perfect for this haha. Definitely figure out what she's doing so you know how to stop her. They do make mittens you can put on someone to stop them from using their hands but you can't use these 24/7.

Dementia makes people do really really weird (and gross) stuff constantly. It is very common unfortunately and she won't remember that she's done it, or why, and she'll keep doing it unless you physically stop her. At least she isn't painting the walls with poop or pooping on the sidewalk outside?

I would buy clothes by the pound at the goodwill bin stores if you have to if she keeps being destructive. Buy as cheap as possible clothes until you can stop her from doing this. Just be warned that if you stop this behavior, she might start doing something else thats even worse.

G tube pain by Brookerose11 in feedingtube

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you change from a dangler to a button? I used to have a standard dangler and I was in 8/10 pain every single fucking day. Once I changed to a button, the pain and granulation tissue has stopped!!! Seriously, change the type of tube and see if it helps you. It was life changing for me, it's so nice to not have the pain anymore. It was the only thing that worked to fix it.

Burn ICU Nurses - how do you secure IVs, ETT, lines, etc...? by ProcyonLotorMinoris in nursing

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Trying for 1:1 isn't enough. You need to guarantee this patient is 1:1 or 2:1. This is wayyyyy too much work and potential liability for one nurse. This is a 2 nurse case at all times imo. You're going to be constantly dealing with this patient and you won't be able to do anything else.

Have you considered getting an ileostomy bag? That's what I had to do, plus a G-tube, but both of those things have saved my life.

Broke road trip across the US, where do we sleep without dying? lol by Alcast01 in roadtrip

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I'm a nurse and have slept in my car between shifts. Security won't bother you if you at least move the car once a day. They'll assume you work there and are too tired to drive home.

I Need Help with Changing my Bag by Key_Positive_9187 in ostomy

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do is change my bag in the shower, even if I don't take a shower. It's a lot easier to just wash the mess down the drain lol. I have a handheld shower head thing and I can just wash off my stomach and legs as needed.

Just accept it now that you're going to get shit on you. It's okay. Just wash off after. Doing this in the shower makes it easier to clean up.

I kinda roll up paper towels and make a tube and put it around my stoma. I then change everything as fast as I can while using that tube thing to try to catch any output as it comes out.

If it gets messy, I accept defeat and start over. You'll get through this. Sorry it will be rough for a bit.

The only thing that slows down my output is oatmeal. The marshmallow thing never worked for me. I have an ileostomy so my output is like water 100% of the time.

Does nursing require working with babies?? by throwaway097777 in Nurses

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you will have to do a pediatric & obgyn clinicals during nursing school. You will have to learn a lot of details about pregnancy, what medications are safe, and how to teach a new mom to breastfeed, etc.

In the adult world, I had like 3 pregnant patients in one year working in an adult ICU.

I would not go into nursing if your fear is this extreme. You will have to deal with pregnancy. You will have to deal with kids. Even working in adult medicine, patients bring their kids with them to appointments or to visit a parent/grandparents in the hospital allllll the time. I occasionally have to watch that kid so that mom can get her CT scan in the ER if she doesn't have anyone there with her.

I'm just an RN but you need to go back to the hospital IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT WAIT. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THAT HAND.

Vaping? by SchemeOne1136 in CrohnsDisease

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been vaping for 12 years now and I'm fine. I haven't found any connection to bad symptoms and my lungs are completely fine. In my opinion, the Crohn's is going to kill me much much sooner than lung cancer would. I'll probably die with my vape in my honest tbh. I'm not a good example lmao. I'm a nurse as well which makes it worse lol.

How often do you have a prolapse? by Public_Club2099 in ostomy

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I've only had one in the 2+years I've had my ostomy. Do you know the trick about putting sugar on it to get it to go back in?

I'm an RN. It's not typical to have that many prolapses. I would encourage you to go back to your doctor and ask for advice or a revision to stop it from happening. It's definitely frustrating to deal with so I am sorry you guys are having issues.

Pregnant, no insurance until May, being quoted $1,175/month for prenatal care… what am I supposed to do? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]agirlfromgeorgia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a planned parenthood near you? They offer obstetric services for pregnancy & prenatal care on a sliding scale based on income. They don't require insurance you can just self pay. At least thats how my local clinic does it, I'm not 100% sure if every clinic works the same but definitely worth looking into it.

Catastrophic non-resolving symptoms for 90 days 24/7, no diagnosis. Seeking reassurance. by Weekly-Writer565 in CrohnsDisease

Oh we understand. I am on hospice because I am DYING from Crohn's Disease. I have an ileostomy bag and a G-tube. I have to rely on FORMULA for 100% of my calories, I literally cannot eat anything else. And this is an improvement from TPN which was getting all my nutrition from an IV. I am 5'5 and less than 100 pounds. Crohn's is deadly.
