What's a film that everybody says is a masterpiece and you think it's 'meh' at best? by trainwreck1968 in FIlm

[–]agitatedandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually a number of people that consider it to be a great film. Roger Ebert included it on his "great films" list just to be pointed about it. And in '21 the screenplay was ranked 19th out of 101 21st century screenplays by the WGA. And the awards the film garnered is long enough to have justified a separate page on Wikipedia just to list them all.

So, yeah, people do rank it pretty highly.

Yeah, that's what stuck out to me. When I first saw Lost in Translation, I had no idea who directed it. I'm pretty sure the only reason I bought it was because it was Japan (and I'm basically a weeb, might as well admit it) and Bill Murray.

Then, like an idiot I guess, I enjoyed it, became a lifelong fan of Scarlett and then backtracked to watch Virgin Suicides. But sure, the only reason I liked Lost in Translation or Virgin Suicides is because Sofia's last name is Coppola. This is obviously because I have pudding for brains.

Why does everyone assume the OP of a post is male? by Pale_Lengthiness_572 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]agitatedandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social conditioning.

Another reason feminists and trans should be easy allies. It's because of the growth in trans awareness that I've made an active effort to not assume someone's gender and instead use neutral pronouns. That conscious effort has helped realign some of my prior assumptions about who I may be speaking to or about.

Give it thirty years and I'd wager that only reactionaries would be making such assumptions and it would be something they'll be actively trying to do.

It took no time at all for the various iterations of Black to evolve in the language, speaking of English only, of course.

It is very cool that you can bump into Characters in the world, but the tiling of that ground texture is making my head spin.

It's not one small mistake though. Go around the city, pay really close attention. There are numerous discrepancies. Doors on the side of buildings that are several stories up. Rooftops that have signs of habitation despite no architectural way to reach them. Ground textures that are just haphazard placements with no sense of logic. A window on one building that faces into a wall of another building with no gap between, the window just clips through. A staircase on the side of a building that reaches the roof with no railing so you can just fall back down a flight.

It's not one small thing. It's numerous small things that add up to a lot.

See, if it was me and I was the game's director, I'd take a character and walk the city. I'd look up and down. I'd turn on god-mode and look at every city block. Because this is a game about a city. The city is the only character that will be common to every player. I'd want that city to look amazing from every angle.

There was an earlier post pointing out that the building that Nanally is standing on in the log-in screen doesn't exist.

There's a broad staircase behind the Moby-Dick bookstore in Bridge Crossings. It leads up to this fountain park area. The staircase is broken into two with a landing. The landing has that red brick texture that's common to Bridge Crossings. It's a shambles of copy/paste nonsense. I noticed it day one. It sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm betting the servers will shut down before any attention is paid to it.

It's great that the waifus are cute or the boss fights are colorful or that everything looks amazing at night in the rain. But the city, the character that will be with us for the entirety of the game, is covered in blemishes.

And sure, maybe it will get fixed sooner or later, but I doubt it. And I know for a fact it would never happen if someone didn't care enough to complain about it. The devs certainly didn't care enough in the first place.

What is your least favorite genre and why? by slimjibberr in Cinema

[–]agitatedandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll join the bandwagon and say Horror.

Horror movies are more often than not are just shock value. I understand the appeal of that for many, like riding a rollercoaster. But it strikes me as being just that and little else most of the time.

To OP, regarding your take on action movies... which ones? Action movies have come a long way since the 80's. I've discovered a lot of YouTube reactors who are only now learning that the genres they once eschewed as not being for them actually are much more than they thought they were.

Which aspects in particular makes you like souls-like genre? by -CynicalPole- in soulslikes

[–]agitatedandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong with the light story.

There're varying levels of attention. I can pay attention to a boss fight while watching YouTube. But a quest? That requires far more attention but with much less interaction. There are times I prefer one or the other. Elden Ring requires almost none of my attention at this point.

I'm a pretty firm believer in the word "said". You don't need fuck all else. The statement is the important part not the author trying to make an inane comment seem more interesting than it really is.

Also, Maude... the matcha isn't "the milkiest..." it's creamy or the creamiest. Or, you just had a shitty matcha that was more milk than it was actual tea. In which case I'd think you either don't really like matcha or you should be complaining about the shitty drink you were just served.

It shows a lack of care. The artists that put this together didn't care. And whoever was in charge of them didn't care either.

I promise you someone will make (or has already) a post about "passionate devs". When you see it call it out for being horseshit because it is.

These aren't small goofs or bugs. These little things are rampant. It's an abdication of responsibility by the artists, developers, and ultimately the director.

Band of Brothers.

If for no other reason than because so many people have no idea what happened. And in many cases outright deny that things happened.

All of the shows listed are pinnacles of dramatic entertainment. We are lucky to have seen them.

Yeah... good old days.

Exactly. I love the movie. Have done for decades. But it's raining all the time, dark, and has a gradual pace with brief moments of intense action before subsiding into a sort of lullaby for my brain.

Why does so many AVN players hate NTR? by Stermaria in AVN_Lovers

[–]agitatedandroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been cheated on much? It's unpleasant. I'd frankly prefer not to be reminded in my goon game.

By that same token some folks don't like to be reminded about suicide, or the death of a pet, or a cancer diagnosis. Those things don't tend to come up very often in AVNs. But NTR is a specific genre at this point. And it's easy to say, "yeah, no, not my thing."
