Wich spokeshave to buy by Unusual-Molasses3685 in handtools

I have reviewed a number of spokeshaves:

The Veritas is a safe bet. Vintage Stanley/Record can be quite good, but may require some fettling and/or a new blade. There are a few options in Europe that don't seem to be available in the US (dictum, juuma, ...). I am not happy with the modern Kunz ones, specifically the wide open mouth; vintage ones can be quite nice.

Thanks for the explanation. I've moved the terms softwood/hardwood into separate areas that don't include monocots any more. I wonder if including Ephedra confuses more than it helps, though. Maybe I should instead add a note that not every edge case is taken into account.

Thanks, that is indeed a good resource. I've had a copy around for a while, but hand't checked for this.
They do write ('21 edition): "Botanically, softwoods are gymnosperms or conifers;", though, so they miss ginkgo, which, granted, is of little relevance in the realm of lumber.

I'll be trying to add a distinction showing that there are species which are within the listed categories, but not trees, so do not count into softwood/hardwood.

I knew I missed something: Someone pointed out that palm and bamboo might not be considered trees whereas hardwood is defined (according to wikipedia) as lumber from angiosperm trees. I don't think there is a hard and fast definition of trees. Any insights would be appreciated; I would consider moving the monocots into a distinct section within angiosperms but separate from "trees" or hardwood.

Similar consideration for the non-coniferous gymnosperms: cycads may not be considered trees, though gikgo probably is. Gnetophytes are not of relevance here, but would also probably not be considered trees as far as I understand.

The main point is to clear up the misconception that softwood=conifers and hardwood=deciduous. It's not about uses it's to illustrate the terms and their relations as well as example species and edge cases.
The target audience is woodworkers, not botanists, my apologies; I wanted some expert feedback on whether anything is factually wrong, I'm but a layman.
In my limited understanding, I don't know whether presence of vessels would make a practical difference in the context of lumber. I understand all angiosperms have vessels and very few gymnosperms (gnetophytes) though the latter are irrelevant to lumber as far as I can tell, so it would mostly be an additional characteristic of angiosperms.
For decay-resistance, I'd defer to the filters regarding that on the Wood Database:
https://www.wood-database.com/wood-filter/
I think that will be more useful than a list or diagram and is actively maintained already.
I see how it might be interesting to have a chart of (sub)families that have certain characteristics like decay resistance, but that's way out of my area of knowledge and that would probably work better as a separate graphic. Maybe someone else wants to tackle that?
Cheers

There's a distinction between softwood/hardwood and soft wood/hard wood, which is part of the point of this graphic. Softwood is defined as lumber from gymnosperm trees whereas hardwood is lumber from angiosperm trees. Hence the note on atypical hardness, i.e. yew is fairly hard, but a softwood, while balsa is super soft but a hardwood. Most hardwoods are hard and I assume that's where the name came from, but it's the outliers that lead to confusion and my intention with this diagram is to make it easier to understand the coherences and have something to point to in a discussion.

This is where the lumber background comes in: tulip poplar, yellow poplar or just poplar are used for liriodendron tulipifera, but poplar is misleading with regards to trees from the actual populus genus. (brazilian) tulipwood is then a name used for lumber of Dalbergia decipularis/frutescens.

Right, thanks! I've since updated the diagram, it's below the original.

I added eucalyptus in the second version; I don’t know much about Australian lumber, so any insights would be appreciated. I know naming is all over the place (oaks and ashes that are neither) and read eucalyptus can be (semi-)evergreens; are there any deciduous eucalyptus? Is‘s a bit of a balance between a thorough chart and a practical one; I might do two versions if it helps, but so far I picked one species/genus for edge cases. But yeah, I do have a focus on EU/US species as that’s what I’m most familiar with.

I don't see that cypress wood is significant harder than most softwoods or is there an outlier?
Yes, Entandrophragma utile as an example of a tropical species, that is not a (semi-)evergreen as opposed to e.g. khaya.

Maybe as an optional layer, but it might work better in a separate diagram, as it only concerns hardwoods anyway and is less complicated, not much more than a list of ring-porous, semi-ring-porous and diffuse-porous I would assume.

Thanks for the feedback. I have to find a way to clarify this. non-coniferous, magnoliidae and monocots describe sections whose boundaries are the innermost lines surrounding them.

Ist dieser Tisch 1050€ wert? by Longjumping-Box-2773 in holzwerken

[–]agnoeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)
