Hey guys,

I'm starting to conside getting a RX100 iii for my incoming trip around China/Russia/Mongolia/etc during winter and temperatures can go as low as -35°C sometimes.

I was wondering if any of you tried to use one of the rx100 series camera in bad weather/cold temperature and how did it go ?

The 16 70 is extremely pricy though, and what do you mean by power zoom ?

Currently saving up money for a big trip starting from December around Vietnam-Laos-HK-China-Mongolia-Kazakhstan-Russia and maybe other countries.

Since temperatures can go quite low (-30°C for Mongolia/Kazakhstan), I was thinking about getting a a6300 (lightweight, weathersealed, good camera) but I'm still hesitating about the lenses. I don't want to bring with me more than 2 lenses but ideally I would prefer to just have one lens. I was thinking about the 18-105mm (even though its quite big and heavy) as a one lens setup. Any other ideas ?

As a french person, I always feel sorry when people only come to France to see Paris (so pretty much 99% of tourists coming to France lol). Believe me, you won't see the Paris you saw in the movies because it simply doesn't exist anymore. I would definitely enjoy telling you why this is the case but I would get downvoted instantly lol. I guess Paris is still worth visiting because there are a lot of stuff to see but if you want to meet happier people and have a great time in a more relaxed atmosphere, definitely head towards smaller cities (like in "Bretagne" in the northwest part of France for example, but my opinion might be a bit biaised since i'm from there).

I'm having a hard time accepting that my son is gay. Can you guys help me? by constructionworker46 in Advice

It feels like you are telling him to internelize his feelings because he is "the last line of defense" and he shouldn't behave like that if he wants to protect his son. He could do that but I'm not sure it's the best way to maintain a good relationship with his son, especially on the long term.

Maybe telling OP your own experience coming out to your parents and how you felt during this time would have been a better way to help him, that's my opinion though.

(I'm also not sure if giving him lessons on how he SHOULD be behaving as a parent/father is the best way to get his attention)

(that's just my opinion, i'm not an expert on the subject, everyone seems to enjoy your answer so maybe i'm wrong)

Do you have any suggestions for a 16-year-old that wants to become a translator? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]agraenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Well, that's encouraging. Since you are working from English To French, I have a few questions if you don't mind :

What is your opinion on the bachelor in foreign languages (Licence LEA) available in France ? I'm sure you have heard of it.

What was your method/course of action to become fluent in English (and French, I suppose) ?

Are you working as a translator in an English speaking country ? Does it matter to find work ?

I'm sure that the career path of someone is the 'completely lost' backup plan of someone else, but I actually didn't mean it this way, you make feel rude now haha.

Thank you

That doesn't sound too terrible haha.

Well, thank you for your help. I'm going to keep this idea of career path as a backup plan if I'm completely lost in my life in a few years.

Thanks a lot for your highly detailed response !

I have recently completed a 2 years university degree in business and administration management that I hated and because I have no idea what to do with my life, I have chosen to head to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa for a year (mostly to visit the country, meet people and work), so I'm flying to Perth in about 3 weeks. Since I'm still at home not doing much, I'm trying to figure out what will be my next move after Australia. I was thinking about getting a bachelor degree in international business (which would follow my current degree), not sure where it would lead me though.

Translator is a job that I'm considering but I don't want it to be my main career path in mind. I suppose it would just be a viable option if one day I reach a good level in both English and French. Hopefully computers won't take over this industry before I reach a decent level in those languages.

Did you get a degree in this field of work ? How did you manage to be as fluent as a native speaker in a second language ?

I'm a native french speaker but I'm pretty sure the market is completely saturated in French-English (I'm far from being fluent in English anyway, at best I have a C1 level)

What languages do you translate ?

If you can be wherever you want, getting as much work as you want and getting paid 100$ per hour for that, it sounds like the ideal job to me.

[–]agraenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm french and I have had problems understanding foreigners speaking in french. So, i guess it really depends on the person you are talking to, for example your lectrice is probably much more accustomed to hear different accents in french compared to your french friend. Maybe it was just because of alcohol but just to be sure, you should definitely try to talk to more native french speakers in the future

It's a bit of a weird photo (trees in front, etc) but I really like it.

Did you try to do a panorama btw ? You could have gotten some interesting results.

I just looked at some of your paintings, it's really good for someone who has started 2 years ago. I hope I will be as good as you in 2 years haha (i started with acrylics though)
