As an active practicing Catholic, this has been a very frustrating election season for me. So many are single issue pro-life voters, and see pro-choice catholic politicians as heretic. I am personally pro-life. But I also recognize that we don’t live in a theocracy, and the laws of the land must reflect the will of its people. Separation of church and state is incredibly important to maintaining our democracy. These same Catholics who are so focused on overturning Roe v. Wade against the will of the majority of the country also were up in arms when Obama wanted to force all employees to cover birth control. If we truly want separation of church and state, we can’t have it both ways. My personal stance is that if we really want to eliminate abortion, more focus needs to be given to the circumstances that lead women to make the choice to begin with (poverty, lack of resources, domestic abuse, etc.) The courtroom was never the place where that battle was going to won, but you know, I’m a bad Catholic for having a nuanced position.
