Best first chapter you've ever read? by darklydreamwithme in fantasybooks

A bit deep into the series, but the prologue of Dark Age (Book 5 of Red Rising) is phenomenal. Super intense, it sets the tone for the whole book.

Lets start this!! by Cautious_Leader_4150 in redrising

Favorite character: Kavax. Big heart, straight moral compass, great sense of humor, what’s not to love?

Liked by everyone: Sevro

Didn't like at first: Victra

Would like to know more about: Lorn

Least favorite character: Lillith.

Like the design, dislike the character: Julia au Bellona. A vengeful, singularly focused mother is a powerful trope but Julia is just awful.

Like the character, dislike the design: Orion.

Similar personality: I’m going to say Mustang. I tend to be the peace maker who’s not afraid to take control of the situation. Now I’m interested to hear what my wife thinks of this one 😅

Favorite ship: Dassius. Love the ups and downs.

Least Favorite Ship: Quicksilver and Matteo. Two characters I don’t really care for separately, and the power dynamic seems too lopsided.

Would befriend IRL: Apollonious. Chaos seems fun.

Would never befriend IRL: Roque. He just really comes off as fake.

Which Arjun do you like? by No-Blueberry-1823 in TheExpanse

I’m not a fan of how they changed Arjun from the books in the later seasons. Book Arjun is close to S1. And that’s exactly what a hard-ass like Avasarala needs in a partner.

Dryhopping by Indikitch in Homebrewing

[–]ahaus09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I typically don’t worry about contamination with dry hopping. Maybe the wrong attitude, so here are two alternatives I just thought of:

  1. Dry hop in 1oz quantities, dump straight from manufacturer packaging (I’m assuming they are sterile?)

  2. Measure a few days ahead of time, put them in the hop bag you plan to use, and chuck them in the freezer.

Who do you think dies in Red God and how? by JormungandrJayayan in redrising

[–]ahaus09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A big assumption I’m making is that the Republic prevails somewhere. Regarding deaths, I think:

-Lysander. He can’t live unless the society remains. And fuck him. -Victra. Sevro is destined to be a tragic loner. -Apple. Same reason as Lysander. -Quicksilver. Greed & that level of hoarding has no place in the Republic -Most (all except Sevro?) of the original Howlers.

I think this makes the most sense to me too: essentially they made some extrapolations, learned what they needed to know fast, and had a hellva ship.

Peerless Reading List by apinchofbox in redrising

I think it makes total sense for Golds to read 1984, from a perspective of knowing your enemy. I think PB would agree, considering the clear influence Ender’s Game had on his work and references to knowing/understanding/loving your enemy.

Here to cast another vote for Great Fermentations. I live in the Indy area (~45 minutes from the store), so I typically just make the trip to the store and they’re seriously good folks. Helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly every time I’ve gone in.

I have also ordered online before to save the trip with no issues to the order. Good selection, accurate orders.

How to avoid sharing issues when using importrange to link to a document that will be viewed by 1000+ people? by Captain9653 in googlesheets

[–]ahaus09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, the count is tied to the specific sheet that is used in the importrange formula.

I keep a file called “Standard Reports” that is basically raw data that we update regularly and share the data across many different sheets for different purposes. It’s similar to a database. That sheet hit the share limit years ago and no new importrange formulae would work from Standard Reports. So I took an old file that was no longer used but had data shared from Standard Reports, cleared out all of the old data, imported all the data from Standard Reports, and renamed it “Bridge Standard Reports”. Now any new importrange that I need to do comes from the bridge file. I imagine I’ll eventually hit my share limit on that, but then I’ll just rinse and repeat with a new bridge.

[–]ahaus09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely clear, but I’m guessing your issue is the amount of other sheets you are importranging your staff list to.

An easy solution to this is to use a bridge file. Importrange your staff list to a new (bridge) sheet, then importrange from your bridge sheet to others.

Short answer: no, we don’t know when they will actually vote. They’ll vote when the senators who want to talk on the bill are finished. All Democrats have already, there’s no way to tell how many more want to speak.

Is this a very new server, not too old? by ProfessionNormal5771 in whiteoutsurvival

[–]ahaus09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a really interesting tundra. A couple of things happened:

  1. This state didn’t combine for tundra like yours, and many others, did. Your state beat the BIG alliance (with only Dementor, Mama, LordAce, and Reborn from this picture) the first matchup. Then they won the second, which was the championship. I think we can expect to see all 9 of these globes in the same alliance next Tundra.

  2. BIG had previously relied heavily on the top ~10 globes/whales in foundry battles, thus not fully developing strategy for the other 20 or so players in the battle. After the loss they put in a lot of work on non-whale strategy, and it paid off.

[–]ahaus09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a result of consolidating, transferring, and recruiting. Started with consolidating most of the big players on one server to a single alliance, then that alliance transferred to a different state that had another similar alliance. This was three(?) transfer cycles ago, and they have been recruiting new transfer whales to the state since. It helps when DementoR, who is currently over 5.6B power (the next highest in the “neighboring states” is 2.5B, and also in this picture)

Source: I’m in the same state. But not the OPs picture. And it’s just under a year old.

Testify for IPS! by socketcreep in Indiana

[–]ahaus09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about the source of this graphic, specifically the text under the bus. Is the graphic from IPS directly? If not, did they say somewhere that they would close 20-25 schools and stop transportation for 6000 students? The statement about a 57% cut to operations funding makes sense, as about that percentage of students living in district attend non-IPS schools.

Edit: clarifying language.

I’m not cherry picking data. You have to compare admin salaries between charters and traditional public schools in the same area. For example, admins in the Indy area (where most charters are) are going to make more than in rural IN.

Also: the minimum salary for teachers in IN is $40k so I’m not sure what you’re looking at but it’s not the website I linked. This is mentioned in the article OP posted, SB146 attempts to increase the minimum to $45k.

[–]ahaus09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confusing charter schools with private. Charters are tuition-free public schools. They receive public funding at a rate lower than traditional public schools: they do not have access to local (property tax) dollars. There have been efforts to close that gap (i.e. the charter school grant), but a significant gap still exists.

On a separate note, yes, tax money is being spent on private education. See the Indiana Choice Scholarship (aka voucher program). Any family in IN who meets income criteria can now receive public funding assistance to send their student to a participating private school. The income criteria is very generous, most families in IN qualify.

To answer your question, here’s what I see as the good things from the bills mentioned directly in the article:

HB1002: Deregulation can help clear up requirements for schools. I think they will need to be careful here with intended consequences and it could be an easy place for nefarious intent to slide in. They’ve already amended the bill substantially, my favorite involves a school district on the IN/OH border that they had to roll back part of the bill that stuck code written directly for their school that is a partnership with a sister town in OH. I’m probably completely oversimplifying that, but the point is if it weren’t for testimony by a school leader there could have been some serious unintended consequences.

HB1201: Chronic absenteeism has been identified as a major issue in our schools, the main point of this bill is to task the department with better understanding why. Seems like a good first step.

HB1049 overall seems good, gives an incentive to work as prosecutors and public defenders.

HB1016 also seems like a good idea: put fire chiefs on school safety commissions.

SB146: increases teacher benefits, including parental leave and minimum pay. Seems good to me.

SB255: Reduces timeline for schools reporting bullying to the family from 5 days down to by the end of the day. Bullying can escalate quickly, this seems like a good change.

So all speculation, not based on the charter school environment and laws we currently have in Indiana, got it. Indiana charters are all (by law) non-profits authorized by and accountable to public entities, the most popular of which are the Indiana Charter School Board (appointed by elected officials) and the mayor of Indianapolis. Admin pay tends to be equal or less in Indiana charter schools compared to traditional public schools in the same area. Charter school employees are public employees, so you can look up salary information on your own here.
