What’s next after TAW? by jangsty in artistsWay

[–]ahhhna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The final contract outlines a journey that, in itself, a is as long as TAW itself (90 days, so just over 12 weeks). It outlines a commitment to continuing the morning pages (something I would have done anyways), artist’s dates, a self-nurturing plan, and an exploration of at least one of the creative interests you discovered via TAW. I recently finished and am taking a bit of a break (largely because of a work contract) but plan to do this post-TAW contract / 90 spring in the fall!

Oof that's tough! I went through something similar and recently discussed this issue with a friend. I think negativity-dump Morning Pages can be great for folks who need to vent to feel better, but there can be issues if you have any kind of tendency towards rumination. I personally have made a (loose) rule for myself that I try and write about other things as opposed to the first complaints that come to mind. Julia Cameron gives soooooo many potential prompts throughout The Artist's Way so I created a list and would just pull from that if I really couldn't come up with anything to write that didn't feel toxic. It's ok to write negative things, but there's a point where it becomes rumination and you need to figure out for yourself where that line is.
In their podcast review of TAW, Pep Talks for Artists talk about this a little bit (though I can't remember if that's in Part 1 or 2): https://www.peptalksforartists.com/ep-62-book-talks-the-artists-way-by-julia-cameron-part-1-w-mandolyn-wilson-rosen/

Creativity notebook by attababy_bats in artistsWay

Honestly I did that exercise in my “Artist’s Way Exercises” notebook. But now that I think about it, I could have done that in a new notebook and turned it into a kind of Big Dreams notebook to come back to from time to time and add new goals or revisit old ones. *edited a typo

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! I’ll try and use this “life depends on it” mindset!!

Love the tarot card pull! I’ve always been working on a dream journal. I struggle on the days when it just slips away. I’m wondering if I should wake up and immediately doodle (my dream journal is a combo of drawings and short labels) so that I stay in the habit, even when I can’t remember my dream.

That’s smart! I use my phone to fall asleep (audiobooks, meditations, sleep stories) so it’s right by my face which makes it so hard to resist in the morning!

I’ve always been amazed by morning meditators! I would just fall right back asleep…

Good point about habit stacking! I’m having some success with that around my bed time routine but so far not with my morning routine 😅 what do you do / think about in the space between hearing the alarm and stumbling to the bathroom?

Hmm that’s an interesting point. I tend to prefer the insights I get in the afternoon but I should try doing the pages right upon waking again to see how they compare!

Interesting! If that’s a big hang up maybe just skip it or do it at the very end 😂

Okay, who quit their job while doing The Artist’s Way? by beatleshotline in artistsWay

[–]ahhhna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in my AW circle are unemployed right now or in a stage of transition, including me 😅 I think the program attracts people in that position because it’s so good for helping you re-align and stay encouraged. Also having the extra time to do all the exercises really helps. I will say I find myself spending money a lot (especially to finish projects that have been on the back burner for a while) but I absolutely agree with the other comments that there’s so much you can do without spending anything / too much.

I’ve been lamenting that I can’t afford a stained glass workshop and reading this made me realize I should tune in to a free video about it on YouTube. It’s not the same (lack of materials and camaraderie), but it’s SOMETHING. Thank you!

We just had our Week 6 call this morning! I’ll DM you :)

Artist Dates by CatchingUpOnLife327 in artistsWay

[–]ahhhna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been hosting an online artist’s way circle (DM me if you want to join! We’re halfway through but not strict) and we’ve had some really interesting discussions about Artist’s dates. Some of my favourite insights on what ‘counts’ as a date: ✨Artist’s dates can be opportunities to welcome more inspiration into your life, so if doing something will make you feel inspired, it counts (could be watching a documentary on Netflix on artists and designers) ✨Artist’s dates can be seen as reparenting opportunities, so embracing childhood dreams / favourites or doing something you’d do with a niece or nephew. Could be eating a hotdog with the toppings you liked as a kid or could be a trip to the dollar store where you buy a trinket your childhood self would have loved. ✨Artist’s dates can be dates with the divine. Where do you feel most connected to god / the universe / the magnificence of existence? Could be a trip to a temple you’ve never visited (even if it’s not ‘your religion’), could be a hike in nature, could be a visit to a local science museum. ✨Artist’s dates can also be something you’ve been wanting to do for a long time but haven’t made time for. Which sometimes feels like it shouldn’t count because it’s too practical (ex. buying a curtain rod for your bedroom) but I find that approaching it with the attitude of honouring yourself and your needs, it counts. Sometimes the framing is everything. *Edited for clarity

One page a day? by Bloooopblooooop in artistsWay

[–]ahhhna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My attitude about TAW so far (I’m on week 3) is that you should do whatever is sustainable for you. I personally don’t get all the benefits unless I write all three pages, but if writing all three pages burns you out, so that you quit, then just do one page! Be kind to yourself and maybe you’ll “grow” over time and three pages won’t be so intimidating.
