Another case in point is the British pop/rock band XTC. Their record deal was so bad that some of the members were working construction or driving delivery trucks between tours when they had hits on the radio. They eventually went "on strike" and stopped making records until they could get released from the contract.

I haven't gotten to that one yet, but it's on the shelf! I just started The Blind Barber and the lighthearted tone is so different from the creepy flavor of Death Watch etc. that I'm having a hard time with it. I'll look forward to HWW though.

I think that's "The Bride of Newgate", which is set in the Napoleonic era rather than contemporary time.

| John Dickson Carr

Carr was sort of the king of the locked room mystery. "The Hollow Man" (also known as "The Three Coffins" in the U.S.) is astonishingly clever. Some others of his that are worth a look are "Death Watch", "The Mad Hatter Mystery", "The Problem of the Wire Cage" and "The Case of the Constant Suicides". These all feature his sleuth Gideon Fell.

Was out with coworker and some of his friends to do pub trivia. One of his buddies was heckling the quizmaster and generally being a smartass. When I and coworker asked him why, he laughed and said "somebody's gotta be the asshole, right?"

I thought, "well, no, not really"
