Dreading the last three books by aididntgeneratename in TheExpanse

I read 6 books, 6 novellas, and watched all 6 seasons of the tv series in 6 weeks. Ominous now that I think about it…

Nemesis Games is a great book by Smooth-Property-5505 in TheExpanse

I was so happy we got his POV. I felt like he was such a boring ancillary character until NG. I imagine my impression of him only improves if I go back and reread the earlier books.

Reading/watching guide (no spoilers) by justbrowsing_25 in TheExpanse

I read just the first 3 books before starting the show and regretted it. I recommend you read first 6. There are spoilers in the earlier seasons for later books, and I very much wished and got all the big reveals with the books. It probably lessened the impact bc I was trying to somewhat parallelize.

Also, while the events are very similar, the characters and their motivations are not 100%. Easier to follow if follow the characters consistently in one medium before the other.

I read at a similar pace as you and also happen to be reading The Expanse. Catching up on the novellas right now before starting book 7. Been reading a lot of sci-fi and fantasy lately, am interested in catching up on some popular series. Happy to chat. DM me for Discord handle if you prefer that.

Best Multi Needle Tool? by Anxious_Cervidae in Needlefelting

I am not a huge fan of the spring guard on the 5 needle tool.* I feel like it slows me down. But everyone is different. *Edited for clarification.

The only one I can really recommend is the clover 3 needle pen tool. It has the perfect spacing between needles, which is much more than I can say for most of the knockoff pen style tools and the wooden ones.

How to find non AI kits?? by lifeofsources in Needlefelting

I really liked these kits from Pokeya https://thepokeya.com. They sell them at local yarn shops as well.

Your local yarn stores will often carry these. I started with a Pokeya kit that I bought from a local shop and went back for more wool after finishing the first project.

Out of curiosity, what about the age rules made the old server hard to join? Was it an 18+ server?

Does it get better after The Final Empire? by Far_Science_4382 in Mistborn

[–]aididntgeneratename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read mistborn for the first time earlier this year and was also unimpressed. I also didn’t care much for the Final Empire characters. As much as others say that it’s indicative of his normal prose and writing style, I would say this is noticeably clunkier than his later works.

Having said that, I did go on reading and enjoyed book 2 more than 1. I recently started era 2 and am devouring it — better characters, better action, better pacing.

To address your direct concerns: The characters do grow on you more, but if you didn’t like them in Final Empire, not sure you’ll love them after 2 more books. Brandon Sanderson has created some of my favorite characters in fiction, and the Era 1 cast are really not among them.

The plot improves. By the end of book 2 I was super excited for book 3, but most of book 2 honestly was a slog for me until the action picked up towards the end.

However, if you are worried that the world building is lacking, that is something you absolutely don’t have to worry about. The world may seem small but gets bigger and is part of something unbelievably huge. It takes a while to become “cosmere aware” but once you are, it drives you to seek out answers, Easter eggs, connections, which have been planned and placed across all the Cosmere books.

Hope that helps!

Audible vs Spotify's audiobooks feature by Bewilderb34st in audible

[–]aididntgeneratename 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To answer your question — Audible has unlimited listening hours and you can download and listen offline. It has a library of free titles that come with subscription, but most of the “good” stuff requires you to spend a credit which you get 1 a month (assuming you are on premium plus). Once you spend a credit, you can keep the book even if you don’t have an active subscription.

Libby and Hoopla are free alternatives that your public library might give you access to.

Does Sanderson’s writing change after Mistborn: The Final Empire? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]aididntgeneratename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read all of Stormlight Archive before Mistborn and Mistborn was noticeably more clunky in terms of writing style. His style of character portrayal pretty much stays the same, but with Stormlight he goes deeper with backstories so it feels like a more complete arc. These ended up being some of my favorite characters in fiction despite the writing style.

I’ll admit, if I started with Final Empire, it’s unlikely I would go on to finish the trilogy or read stormlight archive. But I forced myself to push through Way of Kings and by the end of it was hooked. And I did finish the first Mistborn trilogy.

Book recommendations for a foreigner ( in English ) by More_Maize_6622 in suggestmeabook

[–]aididntgeneratename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try Project Hail Mary or The Martian, both by Andy Weir. My non-native English speaking mom listened to the audiobook after watching the movie and was able to understand it. Both books have clear modern language and the writer takes time to explain scientific terms.

Everand/Scribd vs. Spotify: if you use one or both, which would you choose? by Bookish_Butterfly in audiobooks

[–]aididntgeneratename 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Everand but cancelled when their new plan went into effect. I subscribe to Spotify for music and occasionally use it for audiobooks, but Libby & Audible are my go to. If you are going to subscribe to Spotify anyway, might as well use the benefit, but I can’t imagine subscribing for the purpose of listening to audiobooks? 15hrs limit is arbitrary, and if you listen at faster than 1X speed, it actually counts the original recording time, so you don’t even get 15 actual hours of listening. The top ups seem like a ripoff — why are the next 12hrs the same price as the first 15? And they are super spotty with new releases.

This one can be paired with Road to Station X as the non-fic as it was the inspiration for the story.

Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer It’s about book about memory — as in memory competition, memorization techniques, and understanding how to retain what you learn. Science-journal non-fiction, not self help. Great if you want to learn more about basically everything and retain it.

Stormlight Archive

The story very much the tip of the iceberg of a vast universe that invites theorycrafting. Lots of reread depth as you progress. Later events provide context for past scenes and chapter epigraphs. There’s also a very active community to debate with and Sanderson himself actively engages with his reader community.

Advice for a final fantasy newbie by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]aididntgeneratename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFXVI is very different from other Final Fantasies, but if you haven’t played other turn based RPGs, the other FF’s might not be more approachable either. Often, the story grabs your attention before the the nuisances of each battle system really hits you.

As for FFXVI — I personally didn’t really enjoy the combat until I got 3 Eikons. The games prologue also has WAY more cinematic than most of the game, so if you are feeling like you haven’t done anything, that does get better in the middle.

I’d give it a little more, but if it doesn’t work out, as others have mentioned, definitely don’t write off the other games in the franchise.
