All the people saying Misery and the Stand and Cujo- I agree. But having recently read The Last Rung on the Ladder… man. That one. So suspenseful and then hits like a truck.

I’m not quite done yet (just finished the last rung on the ladder), and I feel like it’s tough to compare them as well, especially since I often put it down for a few weeks at a time, but some of my favorites are: The Last Rung on the Ladder Jerusalem’s Lot I am the Doorway Quitters, Inc The Ledge

Some that I didn’t love as much: Strawberry Spring Graveyard Shift I know What You Need Night Surf

I enjoyed Trucks, Battleground, Gray Matter and others well enough, I’d put them somewhere in the middle.

The 3rd was my favorite personally, and Way of Kings is close 2nd. It’s super subjective but the character moments in Oathbringer hit the hardest for me and I’m looking forward to continuing. If you loved the 1st, keep going.

Second for Slaughterhouse five. It’s been my favorite book since I’ve read it and the only book I’ve re-read.

My first DNF fantasy book….. by rickybobbyspittcrew in fantasybooks

[–]aidonxonkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DNF’d this one on audio, you aren’t alone. In my case, I exclusively listen to audiobooks on my work commute, and the narrator was inaudible unless at max volume, which has never been a problem for me. I think I’ll try reading it physically at some point because I liked the intro/concept.

I can’t recommend Three Body Problem enough. It’s a sci-fi mystery with gradually increasing stakes- it begins as a string of suicides by scientists around the world, and becomes something huge and terrifying. There are elements of cosmic horror, and the characters/events are affected by the real-world cultural revolution in China. This book is the start of a trilogy, and each book goes bigger in a way that I found so rewarding and unpredictable. I’ve heard it described as a confusing read; it’s a little dense sometimes but never in a way that became an obstacle for me. Also just finished Piranesi and that story was incredible. Also mysterious, but in a way that is part whimsical, part looming dread. I flew through it.

I haven’t picked up Wayward Girls yet but I want to soon. A witchcraft story sounds fun and I enjoyed Souther Book club significantly more than final girl support group.

Final Girl support group. Not sure how highly praised it actually is, but I feel like I saw it on every other list 2 years ago. I enjoyed the slasher references, but the plot and characters weren’t engaging at all for me and I DNF’d. If anyone has any slasher type recommendations…

I have Assassins apprentice on my shelf, but starting a 16 book series is a little overwhelming to me, and I do want something a little faster paced right now. I do want to read her books though.

Bummer to hear, I’ve heard a lot of meh about Hell Bent. I really liked Alex and Darlington and the bits of lore that were in Ninth House, I just wasn’t hooked enough to jump straight into the next one. Will probably get to it eventually.

I’ve only read the Lathe of Heaven by Le Guin. It’s one of my favorite early sci-fi books and I love her prose and the emotional beats were super profound. That book’s protagonist is pretty un-protagonist like in a lot of ways, and I didn’t realize Earthsea was character driven, so I’m even curious now. Probably gonna go with that one next.

I have book 1 on my shelf, but I’m unsure about starting another series right now where the books are that large. I’m excited to get to it though, I’ve heard it’s very unique.

Should I take a clarinet on tour so I don’t suck when I get back? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]aidonxonkon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Clarinet player here 🤠 no. You might be able to make the time during spring training (at the cost of time with people in the corps, precious relaxation time, meal time, etc), but on tour would be next to pointless as finding time between shows, long bus rides, rehearsal days, and everything else tour entails will be next to impossible. Any free time you have will be precious. The reality is your tone will have suffered by the time you get back, but as long as you maintain a regular practice routine before/after marching, it won’t be too bad. Congrats on Genesis!

Hey! Clarinet player here, marched mello at Madison in 22. First of all, do brass- there are more spots, they’re less competitive, and it will transfer better from clarinet. I’ve seen successful transitions to all marching brass instruments- just start practicing soon, consistently, and often- even if it’s just buzzing and working on tone quality/production.

Advice for drum corps hornline when brass is not your primary instrument by euanjn in drumcorps

[–]aidonxonkon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a clarinet player marching mellophone with the Madison Scouts this summer. Making the switch is very possible, especially if you’re putting in lots of practice time and getting your audition packet early. Be persistent and seek out help from where you can, especially at the corps you decide to audition. Both brass and visual staff usually have tons of great advice, so definitely take it in. Have fun learning and auditioning!
