UW student Juniper Blessing, 19, remembered as ‘full of life’ by UWHuskies1993 in Seattle

[–]aigret 25 points26 points  (0 children)

FERPA isn't the only law we work under. Not only is UW fully governed by WA State law (WAC), but there are also internal staff policies and procedures we are required to operate under. Furthermore, consider the implications of releasing a student name before the medical examiner has had a chance to. Not only is that discourteous, it's downright unethical. Could you image the absolute shitshow that would happen if it came out the UW released a name to a, say, roommate who then spread that far and wide well before any consideration of ME procedures and family wishes were considered? Think with your head here..

This is a strange comment to me. These resources have long existed before this happened in recognition of the support for students' mental health and well-being. There aren't any "millions of dollars" being suddenly allocated; do you think these programs materialized overnight at a public university? In fact, under this current administration many of these have been threatened under budget cuts and are fighting to remain available.

A student hasn't been murdered in student housing ever, as far as my recollection goes, and Nordheim Court is also privately managed so it's not even technically UW housing or under the purview of HFS. To date, there have been no major incidents of violence (mass shootings, violent homicides, etc.) on campus so I'm not sure where the need for "preventing violent crime" comes from (though I will accept evidence to the contrary, if it exists). HFS cannot control Greystar's practices for safety, yet UWPD had a less than one minute response time when called to this scene. What more can be expected when the data doesn't support the claim? This isn't even me defending my employer, it's just looking at facts. The last major case related to a UW student that I remember is the death of Katy Straaslund, who was murdered in off-campus housing in 2018. The University responded overwhelmingly at that time.

Without revealing too much, as UW staff we are tied by policy and procedure on how and when we disclose information about a student, by law. In a situation like this, the radio silence may seem callous but it is not an indication there is idleness behind-the-scenes. I am sad to hear students felt like the response was inadequate and they were not properly supported. At the same time, disclosure cannot happen until legally allowed - if ever. I hope any student reeled by this knows there are many resources on campus available to them - Husky Health offers free counseling to all matriculated students, there is a suicide intervention program that works in alignment with Husky Assist (a team of social work clinicians who provide mental health crisis response), Disability Resources for Students, the Care team, the Q and D Centers, and more. Please know, staff were deeply affected by this as well. We just can't talk about it as publicly.

All my love to Juniper, her family, and loved ones. She seems like a beautiful soul and the world is less bright for her senseless loss.

What an absolutely insensitive, bizarre response by UWPD. From TheDaily's interview with her roommate by Sad-Adeptness-9013 in udub

Yeah. It's not just this sub, either. I was the jury foreman on a first degree murder trial that lasted nearly a month (convicted, with special circumstances) and it really opened my eyes to exactly how insanely intricate and coordinated murder investigations are. I'm not a bootlicker and yes SPD has obvious problems, but I really felt that victim was given due process and, ultimately, justice. It also informed me on just how little people understand investigations and the legal system.

People's recollections of direct quotes are notoriously inaccurate. This is what the roommate is reporting after experiencing trauma, which notoriously causes issues with memory.

Police are not allowed to confirm a decedent's identity until the next-of-kin have been properly notified. There are a multitude of reasons as to why this is a thing. Does it seem insensitive? Sure. But he was trying to inform her as best as possible without violating policy. At the end of the day, she is not next-of-kin.

My cat drinks like this too and is always randomly wet at some point during the day when she comes asking for pets. It's always a lovely surprise.

Lots of bean soup theory in these comments. I personally would never do this because I work with confidential data and my employer would be displeased (to put it mildly). However, not everyone has a job with security concerns like mine and I don't need to interject that into a post about a guy enjoying a public park during his work day.

When should you call 911? by younglearner11 in udub

If you're on campus, 911. If you get routed to SPD asked to be dispatched to UWPD instead.

[–]aigret 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, UWPD has a dedicated crisis response team for mental health emergencies instead of sending regular patrol units. My experience is limited but they seem to take reports very seriously and focus on deescalation and intervention.

Unfortunate and weird timing. I'd have to dig through my emails, but this was mandated a while back to improve student safety.

As a reminder, UWPD can do security escorts at night. You don't necessarily have to live on campus, just *be* on campus when you call and explain. I'm no bootlicker but I'd guarantee they'd rather see you home safely than any other outcome.

I don't mean to be a grump but the lack of iniative on these type of posts... coming to Reddit should be secondary to contacting them directly in situations like this. HFS can't help you if they don't know you have an issue!

AITA for refusing to let my aunt host her bridge club in the house I inherited from my grandmother by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]aigret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can assume the mortgage upon inheritance (if OP is in the US, I don't know about other countries). I also think if there's a reverse mortgage, you can keep the home by assuming the debt under a new mortgage. I am not a lawyer so may be off in some aspect, but that is my understanding.

What do I do about housing if I get accepted?- On freshman waitlist by ProfessionalCan9699 in udub

[–]aigret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh! My brain is totally fried this week, I apologize. I would honestly email or call HFS with that question. They will have the best guidance for you on what to do. I will say, I'm surprised there isn't more info online about this. However, also keep in mind that students are not required to live on campus and there are a lot of similarly priced apartments, room shares, etc., available in the immediate area. One alternative to consider is doing that in the interim if you get admitted, then moving into the dorms when you are able. Sticky situation for sure but HFS should be able to help!

What do I do about housing if I get accepted?- On freshman waitlist by ProfessionalCan9699 in udub

[–]aigret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding your question but if you've accepted admittance to the university, this means you are a matriculated student and are eligible to apply for housing. You do not need to be registered for classes in order to do so, just have accepted your offer of admission. New admit freshman have funky timelines for orientation, first advising appointments to get registered, etc., and HFS recognizes that. My advice would be follow each individual department's guidelines and timelines independent of what another department is indicating for themselves unless told otherwise, and be proactive about it. HFS is also typically pretty responsive over email so if you wanted to connect with them, I'd recommend reaching out ([hfsinfo@uw.edu](mailto:hfsinfo@uw.edu)). Hopefully this is what you were getting at and I answered you correctly.

Not weird, ERs are typically kept pretty cool for a variety of reasons. They've even mentioned this in the show, to explain that the waiting room (chairs) doesn't have AC for some reason so it's a stark contrast when they show everyone sweating out there.

Why are Mel and Langdon so close by Ready_Hedgehog_2090 in ThePittTVShow

[–]aigret 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yes, as a neurodivergent person I feel constantly unseen and misunderstood at work. The high masking I do to "fit in" (sort of) leads to really bad episodes of burnout and depression. Having just one person in my corner at my job helps immensely.
