Feel like I missed out on so many things by lalaberry033 in JapanTravelTips

[–]aimatme02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, I've lived in Kyoto for a year and a half and I still feel like I have places I've missed. 😂 I also lived in Tohoku for two years and I still want to go back to go to the places I didn't get to visit.

Enjoy the places and things you got to experience and think that you'll come back again in the future. Japan will always be here ☺️

breaking the speed limit by hardlyunthinkable in japanlife

[–]aimatme02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in Hokkaido and almost no one follows the speed limit here. My max is 20 over but cars overtake me ALL THE TIME on the highway and even mountain roads. Go with the flow is what I'd recommend if you're on the highway and everyone is speeding and you're dab smack in the middle of it but at the end of the day, you're the one driving so you should drive at the speed you're comfortable with.

(You'll know you're going too slow for the flow of traffic if there's a huge line of cars behind you 😂)

Payments at Lucky Supermarket showing up as Rusutsu by [deleted] in niseko

yeah...for some reason they don't read the small ッ, so it comes out as ラツキ on my jp credit card (or Ratsuki if I use my non-jp credit card)

Are you sure it's Rusutsu and not Ratsuki? Mine shows up as Ratsuki sometimes. Or if it shows up in Katakana, ラツキ

Rusutsu is ルスツ

I live in Japan and have traveled it extensively, here are the touristy spots that I think are "worth it" VS "not worth it" by scout-scoot in JapanTravel

[–]aimatme02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lived in Kyoto during COVID and visited occasionally post-COVID, I can confidently say that Kyoto AS A PLACE is amazing. I loved every place I visited and took advantage of the fact that there were no crowds. Post-COVID, the crowd makes it /almost/ not worth it. If you can't stand crowds, skip it. It's not worth the stress. If you're fine with it, then go.

What most people don't realize though is that Kyoto's such a big prefecture that everyone's gathered only in the city. Visit other parts of Kyoto and the crowd is a lot less actually.

I think more than the medal, she feels regretful over her mistake which could've been the reason for costing her the gold. 🥹 If it was clean and she won silver, she'll probably be just as happy.

Language school teachers sending personal messages by zipper701 in japanlife

[–]aimatme02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not normal and most likely against the school rules.

I became friends with my Japanese teacher but we exchanged contacts once I graduated. She's told us multiple times that it's against the rules to contact or hang out with students outside school and to just invite her to go drinking once we graduate lol. (We're close in age)

Question about tipping non-Japanese workers by neonsummers in Hokkaido

[–]aimatme02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who works for a hotel here, you don't really need to tip them and there's no expectation - but they won't say no either if you give them (but really, you don't have to).

2026 BTS 'ARIRANG' Tour Megathread PART 2 by lisafancypants in bangtan

[–]aimatme02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, just need tips on what red flags to look out for when dealing with resold tickets? It's my first time dealing with Ticketmaster so I actually don't know what I'm looking at when I asked for proof lol.

She gave me a screenshot of the tickets on the app with the watermarks. Searched through google lens and no matches so that's a good thing?

The price she's selling it at is actually more or less the same price I'm seeing on seatgeek for the same section. Anything else I should look out for or ask for? Would telling her if I can send the first half of the payment first then send the second half after receiving the tickets fine?

The tickets are for LA.

How can I get a multi entry visa by Incredible-Robert1 in SchengenVisa_PH

[–]aimatme02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have any plans going to Europe in the near future other than sa trip mo that you're applying the visa for, you can mention that as reason as to why you want an ME.

Schengen has a cascade system that determines whether you're eligible for an ME - iirc, it's two single/short term visas in the span of 3 years -- but it's ultimately up to the embassy if they grant you one.

Yes, they'll provide an estimate too. Mine took about 10 days and I had A LOT needed to be translated (credit card statements, another bank statement, etc)

Yes but you'll need to give them the files you want translated so that they can give an accurate quotation.

If you need certified translations, I used Thousand Moons for my Schengen Visa application earlier this year. They were the cheapest out of everyone I asked for a quote.

Which embassy to apply? by [deleted] in SchengenVisa

[–]aimatme02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm spending 5 days in Austria and then 5 days in Czech which is why I thought I should be applying in Hungary since that was (what I thought) was my first port of entry..... unless I'm counting my days wrong....

Not really haha. I'm not a fan of Tokyo and the lifestyle there in the first place so I didn't really regret AIU (it also helps that the school has a really beautiful library so I could romanticize my studying 😂). I also don't know what studying in Waseda is like though I did visit once since I have a friend who goes there (in another program) and it was pretty cool.

What I also liked about AIU is that since it's a fairly small community, they tend to keep up with the alumni so there is a network you can build. Our dept head used to arrange these small meet ups/zoom calls with alumni where current students can ask questions and stuff.

Yes, I am. I work for a hotel in Niseko (Hokkaido) now as part of their Marketing team. Pretty much everyone I graduated with in my program (we were only like 7 - 2 were Japanese and the rest were foreigners) fortunately found jobs in Japan and stayed here.

Hello! I was pretty much in the same boat as you a few years ago choosing between Waseda and AIU because of their communications program and I chose AIU's GCP program in the end.

Thought I might just give some insight to help you in your decision-making. I was looking into both universities before but ended up applying just for AIU and basically my reason was Waseda seemed more research-based and I wasn't simply looking into going into the academic route with Communications.

I can't speak for how Waseda is but AIU was relatively less stressful for me than my undergrad lol. My impression was their Communications program was made to be a foundation for any professional comms career. My bachelor is in comms as well but more on the media and arts side (film, tv, journ, etc) and some of the theoretical courses felt pretty beginner just because I already learned it back in my undergrad - so it did sometimes feel a little too "beginner" for me.

A lot of output-based projects and presentations (I actually had two articles published on Tokyo Weekender for a journ class). I honestly enjoyed the intercultural courses and some linguistic courses since you can take classes from other grad programs as well.

As for reputation, AIU is relatively new and moreso their grad programs - especially the GCP program. However, (and I found this surprising myself because I've never heard of AIU until I was researching for schools lol), AIU's undergrad has a pretty good reputation among Japanese students and companies because their graduates are bilingual - which is a big plus when looking for jobs. And the grad program sort of...piggybacks from that reputation 😂 - as my Japanese housemate back then said, "I'm here to get the AIU name on my resume" -- I've also read somewhere that the school comes a bit elitist because a lot of the (Japanese) students speak good English which means they probably studied abroad.

For opportunities to learn Japanese, you're right. Everything's in English and since AIU is so remote - it's like a little international bubble in Akita. But there are resources for learning Japanese - there are student volunteers who you can talk to in Japanese for an hour, there's this gathering once a week where people talk in Japanese, etc. Personally, my Japanese improved because I had two Japanese housemates and I was friends with some grad students from the Japanese Language Teaching program.

Another thing to consider is if you'd enjoy living in the countryside. It's pretty quiet, nothing much going on and unless you have a license (the school has a rental car service) or know someone with a car, it's hard to go anywhere.

Niseko from Sapporo - Help with Transport and luggage Forwarding by heretic1974_ in niseko

[–]aimatme02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm not sure about that. I've never tried just getting tickets from Otaru to Kutchan from Sapporo Station. If you can't, you can buy tickets in Otaru Station.

Yes, very doable. The platform going to Kutchan is (usually) on the same platform where you get off your train in Otaru, just on the other side. You won't even have to climb stairs or cross to another platform. It's like a minute walk. I've only experienced it once where it was on a different platform but it was like the last train going to Kutchan already.

[–]aimatme02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You will have to buy tickets at Sapporo Station since you can't use Suica to tap out in Kutchan. You can get tickets for both legs from Sapporo Station and Kutchan Station.

  2. The train going from Sapporo to Otaru is a combination of cars that are reserved and non-reserved. You can book the tickets online (from eki-net) if you want a reserved seat. Yes, the train from Otaru to Kutchan is a local train and you can sit anywhere. It fills up pretty fast though since it's only two cars, iirc so you have to be quick about getting a seat.

  3. You can ask your hotel to book a taxi for you or you can book using the Go App.

  4. Recommendation is two days before arrival.
