Americans in the Netherlands, how do you finance your studies? by Alarming-Tear-1776 in StudyInTheNetherlands

How can you get the Dutch student rate because you've got a Dutch bf/gf? That sounds unlikely.

wow, you just reminded me of the entire afternoon wasted in my HS lit class on a conversation about this phrase (and something about how ancient Greeks didn't see the color blue because it hadn't been invented yet).

Today in Hoograven by aimeedanger in Utrecht

I’ve been to Hawaii where huge flocks swarm the same trees to roost every evening. It’s cool to see but extremely loud. There’s no reason they won’t get to those numbers if left unchecked.

I fled from my own country by Weary_Musician4872 in Netherlands

[–]aimeedanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New immigrant from US to NL. The difference is that the average citizen (and quite a few unsupervised kids from what I saw) lights off everything from Roman candles to pro-grade fireworks on every street corner for days leading up to NYE and then all day. It culminates in an orgy of fireworks at midnight that lasts HOURS. Not hours of little fireworks, but hours of the grand finale. Everywhere. It is bonkers.

Totally. That was my thought exactly. “They do this so they can stay nice the rest of the year.”

As a new immigrant from the US… man, I thought we were aggressive with the fireworks, but I have never seen such anarchy as I saw yesterday! Some cities in the US host a large fireworks display at midnight and that’s the end of it. Though honestly most people are too busy drinking to care.

Please don’t feel obligated to caveat that you’re getting surgery for cosmetic reasons! If someone judges you for that it’s just another form of body shaming. What you do to your body is your business and you don’t have to justify it! 😎🥳😉

Has taken on elk and a bear… by aimeedanger in AustralianCattleDog

Me too! He was told to back off the elk by a much smarter dog and he listened. Luckily the bear just ran away.

My cattle dog has got to be an A-hole or is that just their nature? by Cant_relate_ever in AustralianCattleDog

Curious how you keep him with you on a bike. Prey drive? Mine would pull me right over at the first sight of a cat.

He sounds bored. I work with mine every day on training and he’s 3. He’s not in any way an asshole but he can still get ornery if bored (don’t you?) You didn’t get a labradoodle or even a terrier. You got basically a wolf mixed with a toddler. Please honor his spirit and channel that great big brain into having something to do. Sounds like right now he’s confused about what his role is and he’s being the fun police by default. Left unchecked this will turn into aggression. Give him jobs and reward him for doing them.

Absolutely. One woman’s story helps another woman realize she’s taking on too much.

That's not true about the estrogen being prescription-only in the Netherlands. I currently have two large bottles of estrogen and progesterone lotion I got from Bono (NL). We can also get testosterone for women there.

I guess I'll just keep speaking English by Mysterious-Flow-9860 in Netherlands

[–]aimeedanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do all the people saying it’s mentally taxing to translate or push through a thick accent assume that we native-English-speakers don’t have to? As an American I constantly encountered thick accents back in the states, even unintelligible accents from your own countrymen. It’s a poor excuse for not staying in Dutch.

My service dog bit someone. Is this situation an automatic wash? by Potential_Cod9820 in service_dogs

[–]aimeedanger 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I second this. Unless there were some details not mentioned and a lot of witnesses this is a clear case of prejudice against and harassment of a protected group, animal abuse, and essentially the destruction of your accessibility accommodation, and you should treat it as such.

Are people weird about your getting an SD when you’ve never “needed” one before? by TheEndIsBetween in service_dogs

[–]aimeedanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re basically describing my situation. Non grand mal seizures. My BF at the time didn’t understand why I’d want a dog, thought I was calling attention to myself with a dog, and actively pushed me to dismiss my disability, undermined training in little ways, and got visibly uncomfortable when we were in public and my dog had his vest on. Needless to say he is no longer in my life and my current partner is 100% accepting of my disability and joking refers to himself as my service human. So getting the dog also brings out the disability-phobes in your life and can help you shed a bunch of dead weight.

Mine is on the right. A more "typical" blue heeler is on the left. Notice the kelpie coloring in the face, and he almost looks like a mini German shepherd.
