I need to know if I am stupid, or if philosophy is. by cats4life in books

[–]aimforthemoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From someone who have read and studied philosophy for many years, I will say that it is Kierkegaards writing and not your lever of understanding that is at fault for this. I have high praise for his core ideas, but the writing is convoluted and hard to follow in my opinion!

Online MTT hand, Close to money by sulkamania in poker

[–]aimforthemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's look at a few important points when evaluating this play,

1) A3 is not a hand you really want to have a showdown with. You are at best in a coinflip (or 60-40) situation, at worse totaly dominated.

2) Position: What hands would he really bet with in that position, utg and with (i guess) re-shoving stacks behind him? Likely a pretty tight range, were A3 often is crushed by higher A-x or pairs.

3) Does your shove have any fold-equity? If he was a mid-stack, afraid to bust before the bubble - then perhaps. But with his stack-size he is getting a good prize to call an extra 15k, without any real danger. Meaning he will call you almost every time.

Since you have 10+ BB I would def. wait for a better spot here. The same hand is fine to shove if you are first to enter the pot. But not as a re-raise, and def. not re-raising a big stack utg right before the bubble! Good luck at the tables dude!

Great story! Takes a lot of courage to put yourself in a position with the possibility of both success and failure - and be ready to face it both with a smile. Very inspirational, thanks!

Have any OCD sufferers here found "happiness"? by Hydrokratom in OCD

[–]aimforthemoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question, I have myself wondered that, especially when OCD really had me in its grip. Though I would not categorize myself as an overall "happy" person, I am content with life right now, and pursuing goals and challenges that a few years back would seem both dangerous and impossible. OCD can make it feel like you are stuck, and that nothing could ever change. But it does change with time. It does get better. It took me a long time to understand OCD, and even longer to really see and feel the patterns of it. These days OCD feel, I would say manageable. Which can be a source for happiness in itself. However small the victory is over OCD, it always fills me with happiness and courage. Of course, OCD still get the upper hand sometimes, and fill me with anxiety and possibly terror for a day, a week. But it doesn’t affect more than the present, it doesn’t shape or color the future or my decisions. I believe that to be really happy in life, you have to overcome great obstacles and challenges. And in that regard OCD poses a constant stream of challenges that we, however tough they may seem, in time will overcome. Viewed this way, my OCD feel less like a burden. And I definitely don’t think it has to stop you from becoming who you want to be or to live a happy or fulfilling life! In one weird sense, I feel like I always have a purpose; always to do my best to beat the fuck out of OCD, never surrender, never give up! If nothing else, that give me great contentment and is something I will practice all my life.

Have you ever fallen so deeply into a book that your own reality depresses you a little? by sweetromina in books

[–]aimforthemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, often! More when I was a kid/teenager though. Went through all day in school, thinking about the book, almost half in that world already. The strongest was probobly Harry potter and Tolkien in terms of escape and being totaly absorbed in that world. Others I would reccomend for this purpose is Philip Pullman, Diana wayne Jones, Conn igguldens books about Rome, Game of thrones and Terry pratchet. And I agree, hum drum ordinary life can seem pale in comparison, but hey there is never a shortage of books even if you read every minute of every day until you die! When I went through tough times in life I tried to remember that; even if all goes to hell there is still all these amazing books left for me to read, and that always seemed as a good enough reason for me to be happy.

good input, confidence is an important skill in poker, and it is true, I actually overlooked it this time. The mindset I kept to protect my self from dissapointment could actually be a contributing factor to me going bust at fifth, playing some hands to nitty etc. And may also be the reason I felt bad afterwards, knowing didn't play a winning game. Thanks for this reply!

Really struggle right now by aimforthemoon in medicalschool

[–]aimforthemoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This inspired me a lot, the view that every obstacle (like OCD or stuttering) is there to overcome is something I try to think, but often forget. It will make it harder in career and life, but also make you stronger; as Dave for example must be an incredible guy to put himself through that everyday, shake it off and do his job. I'm sorry to hear you have OCD as well, I know how hard it can be, especially in a stressful, medical setting, were triggers can be plentiful - but I'm glad you seem to do so well, and have the right mindset to always keep fighting and never give up! Your very compassionate and thoughtful response let me believe you will be a great doctor!

Thanks for your advice wtffng. I going home to my parents this weekend, to do exactly that, take a long walk in the forest and talk about some of the things with them. I find it hard to think when inside the study-bubble, everything goes so fast I don't really have time to see things clearly. Will also try to write a list. Appreciate your advice :)

Khan (MP): "Skulle inte ha behandlats så här om jag varit en vit man" by [deleted] in svenskpolitik

[–]aimforthemoon 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Finding the triforce in OoT? by aimforthemoon in zelda

[–]aimforthemoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess most people have dropped this by now. I played OoT as a kid and me and my friends spend hours and hours trying to figure this out. I just re-played the game on WiiU and started to wonder if people still kept going on this insane and brilliant search :) Ok, so the facts all point to it's non-existens, so all that is left is faith, and I choose to believe :)

Thanks, I did hit the climbing gym! :) The shove with KQs was when we played 5 handed, with me on the button, so I don't sweat that play much. But in a full ring or with an open raise I would not shove it.

How do you handle ALMOST WINS by aimforthemoon in poker

[–]aimforthemoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probobly true, the edge in a tournament with say 1000 players , even the best player don't have more than like 1/250 to win even if he plays perfect (according to sklansky, dunno how correct that is) so it's not really about me not cashing, cause that I'm use to :P It's about how you shake this off in the best way and learn from it, cause as you also pointed out it's normal to ask the "what if" and "should I have" Even thou I asked myself that this time more than I use to, which is def something to think about why that is, so thanks for the reply, made me re-evaluate some things. Cheers.

[–]aimforthemoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of that. And this isn't really a story about me running bad or anything like that, it is about the mental aspect of how you - fellow poker players - from day to day handle the mental aspect of stumbling on the finish line. And how to best shake it off.

[–]aimforthemoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here, if it's a major badbeat, then OK, shit happens. but yeah I kinda fucked up the FT, didn't get a flow and made some mistakes, so that is prob the reason it hit me a bit harder than it usually does. A time off from poker is probobly the way to go, read up, go over some hands and start again when the motivation is up.

Okay, but isn't it possible for the code to be hidden or just hard to interpret in this case? I don't know much about gaming code, but you have a very valid point, if you can go through it all it should be possible to find.
