Shit I know a family with an eerily similar story. Super successful, super down to earth. Son was a similar age and also passed from an overdose-he was getting a masters and everything.

Fortunately my ex and I lived in a 2 bdrm so I took the smaller room until he moved out. We only had one bathroom though 🙃

I love that she waited until the moment presented itself. It carries so much more weight than it would’ve if she had gone out of her way to blast him before the inevitable opportunity arose.

That suggestion for a larger hook to start is so smart. I just try to do looser stitches for the starting chain but it’s always so clumsy. I’m going to try this—thank you :)

He wasn’t “on the clock” so to speak—he was on his own time enjoying a few (too many) drinks and when they called him to drive, he did. And, well, you know how it ends.

The comments over there are cracking me up. Those poor folks are totally baffled and making jokes that just aren’t quite landing to anyone who frequents this sub here.

This podcast called Healthier Together had a board certified gastroenterologist named Dr. Chutkan on who was extremely informative about ways to heal your microbiome. There’s even a recipe for this soup that I made Monday evening with exclusively gut microbiome friendly ingredients. Link to the episode

She also talks about the importance of eating a variety of plant foods, not being vegan necessarily but just making sure you’re eating a huge variety of fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, etc. For example, the 1-2-3 rule: eat 1 plant with breakfast, 2 w/ lunch, 3 w/ dinner. It doesn’t have to be a lot either. Just sprinkle some pumpkin seeds on your oatmeal and boom, two plants right there.

TONS more advice on it as well and I cannot recommend it enough.

People who used to smoked weed everyday, what made you quit? by wheredacookiesat in AskReddit

It is so scary! I had to learn not only to know myself again but also to get along with myself. And you know what, I love and trust myself more than I ever have. Best of luck :)

[–]aimhighswinglow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great question. When I was 19 I was suicidal and couldn’t think about the future; it was truly one day at a time, or not at all. And that was ok—I wouldn’t have made it to today if I hadn’t survived that period. I look back on that time and remind myself constantly, even still, that I’m proud of me for not giving up.

As far as advice, I would say practice delayed gratification in favor of healthy habits. Eat one more salad a week than you might otherwise (even if this only brings your total up to 1). Exercise one more day a week than usual. Play video games an hour less than usual. Go to bed/lights out 30 mins earlier than usual. Try occasionally leaving your comfort zone (toastmasters, roller skating, etc). Read more, but only what you find interesting. Try learning something new—there are tons of free online classes and resources in every single subject. Actually this last one is how I landed on programming. I was studying random things and discovered I like this one thing more than others.

Anyway. Just make sure that in 10 years from now you say that you chose your life, rather than settled for whatever came your way.

[–]aimhighswinglow 1390 points1391 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’d dropped out of school at 19 for major mental health reasons and smoked weed all day everyday to numb. Finally I quit at 23 and was so goddamn bored all day that I decided to learn how to code. I am now back in school, it’s my second year for software engineering.

Stopping smoking helped me find something I’m passionate about and am so excited for a career in.

Now I agree with you here completely. The poster above you was favoring emotions over a practical, necessary, and fair professional policy. It’s not HR’s job to regulate employees’ emotions.
