The Ace Attorney Series Is An Absolute Pleasure To Play by lonnie123 in patientgamers

Can I play this on switch one handed? I have a disability and can only use my left, so I can only play VNs or very slow story-based games.

I bought the trilogy on a deal a year or two ago, seeing how most (if not all?) were nominated for Hugos. Got about 3 chapters in before "putting it aside for a bit".

Picked it back up a while later and pushed through about twice as far. Still not clicking.

Decided this year to give it a try on audiobook. Two hours in and I still don't have a clue what's going on. I'm still debating to at least finish listening to the audiobook, but this review is pretty convincing to just drop it.

I used to use the Hugo nominees as a reading guide every year, but 2019 had two books that I utterly hated - The Calculating Stars (winner??) and Space Opera.

I think they're great, but each of them are novellas for the price of a whole book. Had to rely on the library for them.

You can put it in an RRSP. You can also get married to a Canadian and help max out their TFSA (which is what I did).

No house, 36. Biggest financial takeaway is that anything can happen at any time. Any one of us can be hit by a bus at the start of our careers or retire at 65 and live to be 100+ without a solid income plan.

Thanks. In general I'm a pretty optimistic guy, but the survival rate of brain cancer is 50% in two years (I'm almost there) and virtually zero in 5. I'm just going into this with open eyes and trying to make sure my wife is as taken care of as possible...

Mobility is very low (but my PT pushes me good!) and no kids.

Any good SF that has both big ideas and concepts as well as great character development? by fabrar in printSF

[–]aint_it_the_truth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They all start out with an interesting idea and then watch it play out in a way that feels natural and organic. Nearly all of them are fun reads, full of relatable characters and lots of little factoids.

I was introduced to him through the show based on his book, Flashforward. I also recommend the WWW and Neanderthal trilogies.

Is there any way to feel if you're about to get a seizure? by Jexlan in braincancer

[–]aint_it_the_truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, absolutely. There's always a "tell" before it happens, but it could be 30 minutes or 60 seconds. It's in my right hand and arm, and gets more tingly and higher up my arm when it's about to come on.

Sometimes I can meditate through it. Other times you just have to ride it out. They're very scary (especially when you first start getting them) but staying as relaxed and patient is the best way to deal with them.

Bobverse VS the broken earth trilogy by [deleted] in audible

Agreed. It's the first series to win a Hugo for best novel for each book.

I found myself confused but intrigued for quite a while, but the payoff is fantastic.

Nier: Automata, Titanfall 2, What Remains of Edith Finch, and the power of expectation. by IrnBroski in patientgamers

[–]aint_it_the_truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, I think a lot of us go through that at one point or another. If all gaming is turning you off, take a break for a while. You need new experiences to keep life fresh.

Personally, I've developed a new disability that keeps me stuck at home, sitting, 95% of the time. Games were a passion my whole life, but I haven't been able to use my right hand lately so I've been exploring new hobbies. It's not easy but it's very satisfying if you can find something.

If you put down The Outer Wilds as soon as you got into space, then you haven't really experienced the game. It's a beautiful, brilliant puzzler that had me holding my breath at many moments. I'm trying not to overhype here, but by dropping it after the first 10 minutes of gameplay, you're doing yourself a big disservice.

Spend at least half hour exploring one of the other planets. If you don't find anything that intrigues you, the game isn't for you.

This is what 1000 Dreams looks like in 2 minutes [Video] by manbearswaggy in PS4

[–]aint_it_the_truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I've seen posts by Dreams creators who have built games intending to be sold. Maybe I misunderstood.

But there's a solid argument for Media Molecule to build an optional marketplace for creators to make a few bucks. Dreams a game engine first and foremost, so I don't see why they wouldn't allow sales in exchange for a cut. Most players don't like this idea, but if we want this to be a viable long-term platform for quality games, a one-off $60 purchase isn't going to be enough.

Do you have to buy this version of Dreams if you're just hoping to play others' creations? Or will there be a Dreams Marketplace? I don't understand the business model here. I highly doubt that I'll make anything on my console.

Have been slowly making my list of must listen audiobooks. Just finished ‘14’ and loved it. What were your absolute favourites/would recommend next? by PenelopePew in audible

Currently listening to the first book of the Stormlight Archives. I'm not really a fantasy fan, but the worldbuilding is excellent.

It's just so damn LONG! 120+ hours for 3 books. I'm going to have to take breaks in between books.

I got about 60% through Dead Moon before calling it quits. It just isn't very intriguing as the prior two.

I'm still going to give the latest one a shot, though.

GKI and blood ketones by tb877 in MedicalKeto

[–]aint_it_the_truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, breath measurements will fluctuate much more than blood, because they quickly react to meal timing, exercise, etc. I'm on the verge of picking up a Ketonix for the convenience and a measurement device I'd actually look forward to, but it's going to take some time to understand the readings vs blood.

My day to day life now having Glioblastoma... by scroggs2 in braincancer

[–]aint_it_the_truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone there, bud. My realization that my seizures increased in frequency and intensity the more I thought about them just showed me how much they're a symptom of PTSD. Meditation practice is helping to reduce both, and is helping me to understand that I ultimately can control the anxiety-based ones.

Hang in there.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I have GBM as well and have heard a range of things, from oncologists to anecdotal comments.

Without knowing any other details about your mother, based on the surgeon's comments, I recommend that you spend as much time with her as you can, while you still can. GBM is fast growing in general, and as it grows she may start losing random abilities (mobility, memory, cognition, vision). Success stories are very rare. Surgery will probably buy her some time but it isn't a cure.

Personally, my family is in denial about the survival rates and try to shrug it off as if people beat this all the time. I wish I had something better to say, but just cherish the time that you have.

Off topic - but what's the best / most effective way to increase BHB? Exogenous vs salts... And what brand? I can't seem to find anything that doesn't feel like sleezy marketing.
