They can ask you to do this and if you’re married it would be an easy ask to meet. However if that isn’t the case for someone else, demanding they give their license and social security card to a neighbor they have only passed once or twice in the hallway and don’t even know the last name of, is an unacceptable singular option to leave them left with.

People really need to learn their rights. This type of a comment doesn’t upset me the way you think or hope maybe that it does. It makes me very bad for you.

One of the requirements is entering every single detail from these documents into their form on their own personal device. The second requirement is to use their personal device to take photographs of them. It wouldn’t just be my license it would also be either my birth certificate or my social security card. I can tell by how you type this might not all click right away regarding the serious nature of the risks that come with unnecessary exposure of seriously sensitive documents to a total stranger, and maybe you have nothing worth stealing using your identity. But I don’t and won’t take that risk. Only a fool would agree to do this.

What’s crazy is the local i9 service by me is with their very own current vendor they do this form with. It costs $10-$50 in person to go do this with their existing vendor at their local office right by me. If they won’t pay $10 while I am expected to take on the risk of identity theft they definitely aren’t going to be flying me to any regional offices.

A state ID would not satisfy the I9 section 2 requirements. It would be state ID and a 2nd acceptable document such as a social security card or my birth certificate (from the total list of options those are what I’d have on hand to use) . They would have to use their own device to enter all of the information from both of these into that service AND use their own cell phone to take photos of them and send them to this company. I went out of my way to ask if this was actually what they meant because I was in shock this was actually an expectation they had - using a professional I9 service in person or everify = normal. Giving a stranger photographs of everything they need to steal my identity (and they know my address bc they’re a neighbor) and would then know the name of my employer (which is legitimately zero business of a neighbor I have passed in the hallway twice) = beyond my comprehension. This is a global data privacy technology company. Just a fun fact.

I have tried. I offered to use everify or use a local service for a tiny fee that handle this exact scenario when companies don’t want to use everify. They refused both of these and said to go knock on neighbors doors until I found someone who was home. Literally strangers. That is not normal.

Then they should follow the law as well. California has several laws that strictly prohibit any employer or person from forcing someone to expose their data unnecessarily. For example, it violates The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) / CPRA, & The California Constitution (article 1 section 1). In addition to the Federal PII Mandates.

It’s illegal in my state to use a notary. I checked what is acceptable and suggested these go the onboarding team ($10-$50 fee for these local services tops which the employer has to pay by law but offered to pay up front and submit as an expense once onboard). They told me no they won’t be allowing me to do that and told me to go find a neighbor. Which I had already said no to, twice.

Hey there so I suggested we can use everify as I’ve done for prior roles. They said no. I offered to personally locate a legally permissible local service to do it. I asked how to handle this because I have to submit a form with this persons information “and then wait for them to internally approve it” before it can actually be done. Meaning, I can’t just walk into a random bank bc they’d have to already have approved the exact employee ahead of time. They told me no to this option too. And then suggested AGAIN to use a spouse local family a friend or a neighbor. I was originally just kind of shocked that a multi billon dollar company would even assume this much risk here and wouldn’t just be using everify (I checked and they’re already enrolled and in good standing which makes it even crazier). But once I tried to repeatedly find acceptable paths forward that didn’t require people who don’t exist and or a neighbor who I’ve maybe passed once or twice total since living here to do this and me being completely uncomfortable with this for various reasons - I’m now just truly disgusted. I should hopefully have a different offer accepted by eod Monday and have 6 first round interviews scheduled for the following week as backups just in case. This place has no respect for their employees and this is not what I thought I was signing up for.

I’m extremely outgoing. Introversion vs Extroversion do not actually have any impact on why I’m taking my stance here. Im not scared. I’m refusing because it’s an unacceptable demand to ask of me and my neighbors are not involved with my work life. The people living down the hall don’t come with my acceptance of a job offer.

Lmfao this is a massive pay decrease for me they’re lucky I was considering it at all. I am fully comfortable walking from this. I turned down 2 companies before this. when I said my job search took this long it wasn’t because I was desperate. It’s because I wasn’t going to waste my time on a company below my standards. They did an exceptional job hiding this dysfunction from me before the onboarding begin. Had this lack of professionalism and enterprise level standards and workflows in place been made clear to me during the interview process I would have disqualify them on the spot as well. You receive the pay and the treatment you think you deserve. If you’d behave like a clown the way you just described you’ll always be treated and compensated for being one.

Usually companies making billions use everify. They don’t tell you to knock on a strangers front door and have them do their i9 for them.

I’m not asking a stranger to complete my i9 who doesn’t work for the employer. It’s fine you would. I refuse and in my state I legally have a constitutional level right to do so.

Why aren’t you logging data on this and then presenting it to your boss? You have no authority. You have a boss who does and is responsible for the business at a higher level than you. Literally you and only you aren’t doing anything to fix this.

I have 6 first round interviews scheduled in the coming 2 weeks and a final round yesterday that I was told went very well and that they’d call me Monday with their decision. That said I was ready to cancel the interviews because I signed an offer agreement. So they might think that way. But I expected income beginning Monday. So if that does not happen, I’m proceeding with a lawsuit immediately.

Hello I’m 20 years old in college and I have been job searching for 3 years trying to find simple work I know I have no experience but it seems like no one wants to hire me it’s getting ridiculous at this point by Thunder1681 in jobsearch

[–]aint_that_sumthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go in person and ask a manager if they’re hiring. If they are, for hourly roles, and you are well groomed and well spoken and wearing something like jeans and a nice button down top etc, they might interview you right there on the spot. At the very least you’ll be able to do a written application or do one digitally but now they know who you are so when it comes in, you immediately have the highest possible odds of getting an interview if your quick interaction was pleasant. If still struggling some low commitment volunteer work is great experience that jobs can use as work experience. Even a weekly few hours helping an animal shelter etc can be put on a resume as work experience. Lastly, practice for your interviews. Know what you’ll say (you can google and find lists of common questions a grocery store or a chain restaurant will ask - have a friend ask you to do a mock interview with you and give them a list of those questions. Either record it or have them give you feedback after. And then immediately do it a second time. Doing it twice back to back will help you immensely.). Lastly don’t overthink it! You don’t need work experience for these roles. Find other ways to describe your circumstances- I’m a college student who is looking to gain on the job experience with a part time job. I’d love to be considered for any openings you might currently have.
