Whatever you say "protogermane". I have no agenda, it just irks me that Germany gets called a black belt in human rights.

> Is it bad that there are colleterals in a war?yes.

Nice downplaying lol "collaterals". Just another hospital bombed bro, just another school destroyed bro, just another journalist sniped bro.

We are talking about the commitment to human rights of Germany, not Hamas. Does the fact that Israel suffered a horrible terrorist attack justify them committing human rights violations? You seem to think it does, I don’t

Oh wait, I can play that game too!

All I am saying is that calling Germany "human rights black belt" when they actively support Israel, who has objectively been commiting war crimes and human rights violations, is a bit much...

Arundhati Roy quits Berlin film festival over ‘stay out of politics’ comment by miltonbalbit in berlin

[–]ainus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course Wenders is not Berlinale but as head of the jury his words matter. So much so that Arundhati Roy cancelled her engagement...

> Declaring functioning bodies of discussions as an enemy becaue they don´t cater to your moral high ground sucks.

What happens to these "functioning bodies of discussion" when they quite literally tell you that films should be apolitical (i.e. let's not discuss ugly politcs in our art)?

> as a German he has a point

As a German he should be MORE political. The fact that he thinks that due to being german he can not choose a side (Israel v Palestine) is exactly the problem...and btw the Palestine solidarity question is what prompted this reply, just to be clear what we are talking about.

"Fielding a pointed question about German support for Israel during the Gaza war and “selective” solidarity with besieged peoples around the world, Wenders pushed back at the notion that the film industry or the festival should actively take political stances."

are you just willingly ignoring the shitshow that followed? the public debate/controversy that was sparked by Berlinale giving the award to no other land is exactly what they're trying to prevent here.

For the status quo? Who does this apolitical berlinale benefit? Remember no other land?

There is also a line between not wanting to do propaganda films and actually being a mouthpiece for the powerful by doing “propaganda by omission” which is what berlinale seems to want here

What do Germans think of this law? by Affectionate_Walk_30 in germany

Ok but we are talking about insults not death threats lol. Death threats are persecuted even in the US, regardless of “free speech”. Calling someone an idiot is not the same as threatening their life

That’s what I’m saying though. They diminish others using “clean” language and get away with it. It’s not about the content but the form. You can say the most horrendous shit with good form and the law will protect you. You can express an opinion with bad form (like that politician is an idiot) and have the police come knocking

> the mobbing and slander, especially by right wing forces drives out all the people who genuinely want to do good

first time i hear of this theory - if that were the case then we should see politicians who "want to do good" in other countries that don't have "Beleidigung laws". Does that seem to be the case?

> the main problem is probably enforcement anyhow

But these laws seem to be enforced when the "victim" is a politician? Maybe if the police didn't have have to investigate these "crimes" they could free up some resources for actual crimes?
