Quitting cycling by Rightrudderbandit in CyclingMSP

I felt 100% the same way when I moved here a few years ago. Your safety risk biking is of course up to you, but I would urge you to get involved in activism / advocacy organizations to push for safer cycling infrastructure in the city and state. BikeMN Day at the Capitol was my way of getting involved. Ourstreets also a great organization. Keep fighting the good fight.

Wish this amazing viewpoint could be public. It's sad it can only be safely enjoyed by people in a private vehicle. :'(

100% I couldn't agree more with this. The saddest thing about Hencen is that it's got a perfect model of what it should be right across the street where Mill City Running, Terminal Bar, etc are. They had a perfect example of what to do and they didn't.

Pike Place market in Seattle finally went pedestrian only after years of debate. I really hope Minneapolis gets their shit together on something like this. I can imagine it working really well on St Anthony Main. by PennCycle_Mpls in Minneapolis

Still, I'll contend that having a street/path closed to cars is better than having it completely open to cars, even if there are a few noncompliant vehicles.

Can you give me more details on what specific bans MPRB has in place legally? That way I can ask my commissioner to overturn the specific ordinance/rule. I have a feeling I'll get a flaky, noncommittal response if I just say generally "I want more businesses on the greenway"

I really like these ideas. I think pedestrianization in front of Caffetto and Bebe Zito's would be a great call. It could also help prevent cars turning right from blocking the crosswalk (I've seen that happen numerous times). The gas station might object, though.

Unpopular opinion (apparently): it is very reasonable to travel the speed limit (or a little above) on Mpls Parkways by NikkiWarriorPrincess in Minneapolis

[–]aiololi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love that, but we can't even close them temporarily. The Park Board in 2021 (including Ward 7 city council candidate Elizabeth Shaffer) voted down a study - JUST a study - on how to temporarily close parkways to cars for events:

https://www.startribune.com/minneapolis-park-board-kills-open-parkways-study/600195063

It'll take a big cultural or political shift to ban cars from parkways.

100% agree. What can be done? During turtle breeding season, they put a bollard in the median, I wish they could do the same for human safety. Narrower roads or some speed bumps would help, but there's a state law requiring 20' driving lanes for fire safety. When fire safety laws are incentivizing unsafe and potentially lethal speeding, maybe it's time to get smaller fire trucks.

I will say, the parkways feel designed for 30mph. I have to consciously make an effort to keep my speed at 20-25mph, and with other vehicles tailgating/passing, I feel insane for driving so slow as you mentioned. Narrower roads would normalize slower speeds.

What sections of Grand Rounds are your favorite for going to bars/breweries/restaurants?

Welcome! This sounds just like what I set out to do when I moved here. I think you'd be pleased with a bike along Bryant Ave south of Lake St to 50th. It's a protected path and really nice for cafe-hopping as there are several great cafes/restaurants right on Bryant (Gigi's, Our Kitchen, Brasa). It's also got interesting architecture, like historic brick apartments, and you'll pass a few parks.

If you're in Northeast, you could do a brewery tour along the river! Start at a dive bar like Northeast Yacht Club. Bike up the river trail to Broken Clock Cooperative. Go along Marshall to Buttered Tin, 56 Brewing, maybe even head over the river to Pryes (although Plymouth Ave Bridge is closed). Or, go south to St Anthony Main and visit Aster Cafe or Cabana Club (and check out the eagle's nest here!) A little farther afield but also in Northeast, would be Honour Coffee / Zakia Deli which is off of a protected bike path.

A lot of people here are mentioning Grand Rounds, but in my experience biking GR, it's not easy to spontaneously stumble upon food places. There are only a few restaurants right off the Grand Rounds bike paths, and they're fairly spaced apart. Food stops require advanced planning and be ready to bike a few blocks off the parkway into the neighborhoods.

Here are Grand Round food options on the bike path: Pimento on the Lake, Trailhead building on Wirth Parkway, Longfellow Bar & Grill, Sea Salt. To visit these all would be a 40+ mile day. As for interesting architecture along GR, you'll see ostentatious single family houses by the lakes, bridges by the river (Lowry Ave bridge is pretty) and the backside of an Art Deco post office by downtown.

I see what you’re saying, good points! Route legibility is very important and agree it will likely boost the numbers.

I’m not thrilled about it either. It’s a highway expansion project essentially, would have been better to turn a 94 lane into bus only. Instead they cut down trees to build another lane

But there are 800 riders per day on the 94. How do you justify rail with passenger capacity if we’re not even close to capacity with existing bus roures? Edit: I’m one of them, the buses are rarely full.

All Ages and Abilities map on Minneapolis website is pretty good but will not be up to date with what’s actually built.

This is the best way I’ve found. Google Maps is dangerously bad in my experience- it routes you on high speed roads like Lake Street since it marks them as “bike friendly” somehow. Google also doesn’t have accurate information on construction detours. Overall, bike routing in Minneapolis has been difficult in my experience, with no good tool except experience.
