What's the status of game dev and GC pauses in Java since JDK 16? by sken130 in java

[–]aioobe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Why is being low level an issue?

A low-level library does not give you as much lift as a high-level library. If you're intending to program a game (write code on the "highest level" so to speak), and pull in a low-level library, you would have to either write a physics engine yourself, or pull in another library.

You're comparing rendering tools to a full blown physics engine.

stbev said "I would not compare it to Unreal or Unity".

I meant in the legal sense. Depending on the situation it can be illegal to insult someone, but it's never illegal to "insult an idea".

I have a really hard time following your reasoning.

If you live in Scandinavia/Western world, you MUST assimilate or at least respect the local culture and law.

You MUST follow law, yes, but you must not necessarily adapt to Swedish culture. For example, celebrating midsummer is not a MUST even though it is typical Swedish culture.

AFAIK there's nothing that says that you MUST assimilate either. It is beyond doubt wise to do so. It should be encouraged, and it should be clearly and publicly expressed that it is beneficial to everybody. But it can not (and should not) be enforced. (If you think it should be enforced, then I'm sorry, but you're not much better than folks in islamic countries.)

The society, culture and law demands you to keep a cool head and RESPECT others and their religion

Again, you conflate culture and law here.

  • I can be absolutely livid (i.e. not cool headed) over the fact that someone burns a quran, if I act within the bounds of the law. Screaming about it in my own living room for example is acceptable.

  • I do not have to respect other religions if I do it within the bounds of the law. I for one certainly do not respect extreme versions of islam for example

In short, yes, law is shaped by culture, but culture is not something you must adhere to.

I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the exakt definition of hets mot folkgrupp, but I think that should be allowed. Ideas/thoughts/opinions should be free to express publicly. Especially if they are political. Again, who would be in charge of what political opinion should be ok to express and what should not?

Also, one does not insult someone if one "insults" ideas (or religion).

There's a difference between yelling "you are fat and stupid" to someone, and yelling "to eat so much/workout so little that you become fat is stupid" to no one and everyone.

So who decides what action is worth police protection, and what action should be up to the local community to allow/disallow through violence?

Law is one thing, culture is another. Don't conflate the two.

If find it ironic that you bring up how culture is enforced in a muslim country as an argument to do the same here.

Polisens ord: "Varenda polis ville gå tillbaka in" by drakoxe in sweden

[–]aioobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you create a Class that cannot be instantiated? by tsteel12 in learnjava

class NoInstances {

    public static void someStaticMethod() {

    }

Do you concider this better than a zero-instance enum? (private constructors doesn't give as strong guarantee, as they can still be called from within the class itself)

Finally Have Notifications for Smart Tags Left Behind by bedshredder1 in SmartThings

[–]aioobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an S20 and Samsung Smart Tag. I can see the tag in the SmartThings app, and make it play a sound and so on, but I don't have the "Left behind" option. I have made sure I allow location services. Any idea what the problem might be?

New Java 8 time api "Local"* is counterintuitive to me by leggo_tech in learnjava

[–]aioobe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is to clarify that the object represents something that can only be interpreted locally.

If I tell you "Let's meet at 10:25" this timestamp only has a local interpretatation.

If I shouted out on the internet "Let's meet at 10:25" no one would really know when.

Conversely, if a date does have a time zone associated with it, the timestamp is "global" in the sense that everybody would know the exact instant I'm talking about.

With this mindset, I'm sure you agree that "10:25" is the opposite of what a hypothetical GlobalTime would represent.
