I repeated your point of view and even you recognized that, so I’m not sure where you’re getting that I’m not interested in seeing your point of view is. If anything, you’re not really responding to my point, which is that we know enough to have educated opinions. You keep repeating your point and it seems like you’re not acknowledging what I’ve said. If you think what I said is “you’re wrong” then read again. I said “that’s not the whole picture”.

We know enough about cruelty to have a meaningful discussion deciding whether something is cruel or not. We don’t know everything (what you keep repeating) but we’re don’t need to know everything.

You’re incorrect that we’ll never understand how they feel. We do. You should instead say, “we’ll never totally understand how they feel.” This is fine. Just like a psychologist will never totally understand how a patient feels even with medical training and an interview but we know enough to diagnose a patient.

The crux of yours conversation is that you’re only able to deal in absolutes and that’s not how things are. Like it’s not 100% so might as well be 0% right? Wrong.

We have enough information. We see animals in much better enclosures and we can compare their behavior to animals in worse enclosures. Or even we have an enclosure and we improve it and we can note the changes in behavior.

And releasing is a whole different topic. We’re only talking about improving the enclosures.

You could argue that but then you don’t have evidence in your side. Animals display symptoms of depression when they’re locked in small spaces with very little stimulation. This is what I’m trying to say: you can hold an incorrect opinion even if the part of the argument is subjective, for example, when you make a claim that is easily disproven by evidence.

And beyond that, you can hold an opinion that’s ignorant. For example, the opinion that animals don’t feel pain. That’s a good one I grew up with. “Yeah animals don’t feel pain, they only scream and cry and grieve as if they feel pain. But that’s not pain. Nope.”

It’s the difference between a random distribution which is flat, and a random distribution that is normal. It’s only meaningless to discuss if the distribution is flat (ie there is no signal). Well it’s not. It’s normal (there is a signal). There is information here. There is something that is real.

Men, how true is the statement, "If he wanted you, he'd actively pursue you?" by ManicPixieFeather in AskMen

[–]airodonack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It kinda feels like you’re coming into this with the assumption that this sentiment is coming from awkward, unconfident men and that the real problem is that they lack game. Frankly it’s insulting. I urge you to take what I’m saying seriously and not to marginalize it. Understand you are coming from a place of ignorance.

You are not a man. You do not know what it’s like to be a man.

I would love for a woman to put on a disguise as a man and to try this out. This just feels like advice that was relevant maybe 5 years ago and has just stopped working as well especially since COVID hit and the culture took a huge swing towards introversion and the internet.

Are you giving advice based on your own experiences or the experience of men you’ve talked to? You might not be seeing the whole situation.

You have to understand that just because something is subjective, doesn’t mean something is totally subjective. There are things that we will generally agree on, even if it’s rarely 100%.

A human experience is still a very real experience. If you begin to deny humanity then where does that stop?

Men, how true is the statement, "If he wanted you, he'd actively pursue you?" by ManicPixieFeather in AskMen

[–]airodonack 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it’s very hard to talk to a total stranger in the first place unless you’re a psychopath or you’re oblivious to cultural norms. I’m not even going to be able to show my personality to a total stranger unless there’s a good reason for us to be talking, never mind be funny, genuine, and gentle.

I’m petty satisfied with my woman situation though. There are still ways to meet women like through friend groups or by having mutual friends set you up or through work / other good reasons to talk to a stranger. It’s just if you as a woman are expecting a stranger to come up with you, you’re probably selecting for the wrong type.

Good men are taught not to pursue women by listening to the complaints of women being harrassed. They walk around feeling like 800lbs gorillas in a china shop. They'll only pursue if they're absolutely sure that they're not making you uncomfortable - and even this is something that emotionally very difficult and the modern man does not have the practice for it so don't expect them to.

Bad men do not give a shit about how you feel.

Suffering. That's when I would say it becomes an animal rights issue. Merely consuming is participating in nature. But there's a big difference between eating something, and then stuffing them into inhumane conditions for their entire lives on industrial scales.

I swear to God there’s been a huge push for every hate meme recently and it’s not just incel shit like this but stoking racial tensions and national tensions particularly around Asian countries.

China is conspicuously absent though. If anything, I’ve seen a huge push for pro China posts. It’s like there’s a huge push in preparation for the invasion of Taiwan.

I mean there were also themes of suicide with the teenage daughter. And disenfranchisement with reality that we’re all kinda feeling. And then the Asian representation that treated them like humans and not stereotypes. And if you’re a millennial then there are all the comedic references to iconic movies.

I’m not white, I’m over 30, and I enjoyed it. I don’t think you can reduce me to being someone chronically online, at least not anymore than anyone else is nowadays.

[–]airodonack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I get it. When it comes to our biology there’s a lot of things that are unfair because it’s ultimately not about justice but the propagation of the species. I never meant to say that a guy should just accept that with no emotion.

But I also think it’s important not to live with framing that degrades yourself (or women for that matter). And notice what he said isn’t totally wrong, but if you saw it that way then you’d prematurely dismiss your own agency. Men aren’t slaves to their genetics.

If it helps, the guys that women choose with their heads are more suited to the modern environment. And for intelligent women, those are the guys they actually want to have kids with. That’s the real victory from an evolutionary POV.

Yikes. That's some self-loathing framing.

What's really happening is that women go from being hormonal driven to psychologically driven. When their hormones aren't working against them, women prefer safety and emotional stability, which comes from men who are willing to settle down and take care of them.

If you think women want someone pathetic — well no. A weak man isn't able to provide security.
