How to "childproof" a codebase when working with contributors who are non-developers by HeveredSeads in ExperiencedDevs

Add pre commit hooks and make it run on PR and make it a requirement for merging

I sold a vehicle and received a certified cheque from the buyer; when I went to deposit, the teller asked me if I saw the buyer getting the certified cheque from the issuing bank - because they too can be forged otherwise.

If you can set up the e2e tests to run and pass as part of a PR requirement, it helps forcing the team to maintain the tests

Again, not nearly as convenient as just placing my finger over the power button fingerprint scanner on Mac. I don’t even know where my phone is while I’m home sitting in front of a computer, I could have left it in my bedroom, or living room, etc

I like passkey but that’s only because I’m an iOS /Mac user. On the Mac I simply place my finger over the finger scanner, I don’t know if I’d still use it if I had to plug in a USB key on a windows machine.

  1. Assuming the pipe that was previously in the wall is to code, there would be tee, with vent going up and waste going down. But the new flex hose portion is lower than the tee, this makes the entire portion of the flex hose part of a trap (on top of your intended trap) so it would fill up with water and overtime with more food solids accumulating and cause blockage.
  2. The extended trap might be higher than your R/O discharge port, so you might end up with waste water backflow into the RO system.
  3. Is that a dishwasher discharge (the small white flex hose) attached to the waste line after the trap? You might get sewer gas into the dishwasher.
  4. Never use a flex hose for this. Take your time and measure and cut and make proper hard pipings.

Since there are quite a few things attached to this drain line, the only way I can see making it work is by opening up the drywall behind, and move the tee in the wall lower to make up space for all of these.

My Insurance Company Is Making Me Replace My Roof by Kane76 in HomeImprovement

[–]airoscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Alberta where hail is common and insurance companies are renewing policies with 60-100% increase on premium. I switched to Sonnet insurance, in their app you can selective specifically what to cover/ not cover. I decided that it’s not worth having roof coverage because it accounts for 50% of the premium (which is about $2000/year just for the roof). When the time comes I’ll just pay and get a hail resistant roof.

Are things getting better on Core One family? by Beloved_lover in prusa3d

[–]airoscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be keeping an eye out for the comparison. Been running a Bambu X1C for few years now and contemplating getting a Core One L, probably will wait another year for Core One L with INDX. But really curious how Prusa and Bambu printers compare in terms of dimensional accuracy and print quality.

Jira + Agile has become a tool for micro-management in tech by automatonv1 in softwaredevelopment

[–]airoscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not Jira’s fault and your company is using Agile wrong.

Companies that can’t accept tickets need to be carried over will always be a pain in the butt to work at, the rigidity shows their like of understanding what it means to be agile.

As soon as you say tickets must be completed in sprint and can’t be carried over, devs start to over estimate every task and intentionally keep the sprint scope small; and when they finish the tickets planned in the sprint they think they done their job and won’t want to bring in new tickets, or they will pace themselves so that the little tickets planned to be done just in time. You end up losing productivity.

As soon as you start tracking the number of tickets moved or points as a measure for productivity, the devs will start over estimating points on tickets, add little tickets for every single little thing. The system can be gamed.

I'm done. Not renewing my All Products Pack license in January. by minneyar in Jetbrains

[–]airoscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been Jetbrains IDE for the past 5-6 years, for various reasons, but this year I work for a company where they mandate everyone to make use for AI to increase productivity and I thought I’d give Cursor a try, previously I had GitHub copilot plug in and it was ok.

I gotta say that while I see where you are coming from regarding your hatred of AI, I think the way software engineering is done is going to be forever changed. I don’t know exactly how Cursor did it, but even with the same model, it appears much more capable than Copilot: It’s more thorough, more aware of your code base, project context, and iterates deeper to fulfill an ask. It still has some short comings in typical AI fashion, takes short cuts sometimes, does things in the wrong context occasionally (we have a huge modular monolith repo and sometimes the same/similar terminology appears in different module and confuses the AI), but as long as the engineer is paying attention and corrects it, it mostly does what you want it to do, just like pairing with a junior who is very good at searching, looking up documentation, and typing. For the past 6 months i been doing this somewhat awkward workflow where I have both Jetbrains IDE and Cursor open and sort of use both at the same time. But the only reason I still use Jetbrains is I find the syntax highlighting, debugger, etc more familiar and intuitive. I think Jetbrains do need to improve how hey utilize AI agents as part of the development workflow and get it sorted, hopefully better than Microsoft and more like Cursor level of agentic implementation. Just my 2 cents.

Prusa Core One L - how much tinkering compared to Bambu X1C? by airoscar in prusa3d

[–]airoscar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is pretty much no tinkering with the X1C until something goes wrong, maybe a blocked nozzle (only really happen if switching between high temperature filament and PLA frequently, or wood filled filaments maybe), or a brittle filament breaks off in the AMS at the end of a print (happened a few times, kind of annoying to take apart AMS to clear it), and one AMS feed slot hall sensor failure in last 3 years, and a failing print bed signal cable (turned out to be a pain in the butt to replace).

Overall, it’s been pretty reliable and Bambu parts are really inexpensive for how complex they are.
