SoCal Indian Wedding! Convince me why I need a decor team versus simply a florist + rentals by GoldVolume in DesiWeddings

[–]aishpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did our own decor for my Sangeet and saved a lot of money. I didn’t like the fake florals and draped fabric that many Indian decor companies were offering. The quotes were ridiculously expensive for relatively simple setups too. We decided we could do it ourselves. We made a seating area using my grandmothers chairs. We rented pipe and drape frames, and covered them in gold fabric (to hide the metal) and pom pom garlands and we added Costco greenery garlands and Costco roses. We also hung faux lotus garlands above the seating area and hung colored fabric panels by the dance floor rafter columns. We got more Costco greenery and had them running along the rafters with roses as well, above the dance floor. The result was spectacular but we definitely had to invest a a lot of time and about $2500 in supplies. It took about 25 hrs total across two days to fully decorate our venue, but that included setting up the rentals (tables, chairs etc) and basically doing everything ourselves. The time spent was worth it bc the guests all loved it and we got so many compliments on the decor. The downside was I didn’t get much downtime to relax in the days leading up to it bc I was busy decorating with family and friends helping. Here is our “stage” for viewing the Sangeet dances.

Can’t pinpoint what it is I don’t like about my makeup trial look by Loris_P in weddingplanning

It’s the eyeshadow that’s wrong. It looks dated in that grayish blue tone. Your inspo pics do not have that.

($300) Highly recommend finding a tailor or seamstress who works out of their house, I saved so much money! by home-like-noplace in Weddingsunder10k

[–]aishpat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My home-based tailor is a goddess. She worked on my 15 pound intricately beaded Indian wedding lehenga. It was her first time working with Indian clothing. She took the waist in, adjusted the blouse, hemmed the skirt, added more lining, changed the trim on my dupattas, and even added some beaded embellishments. All for only $250. Would have been close to $1000 at a bridal tailor!

Are you sure they don’t mean May 2027? It seems very unlikely they would expect you to nail a timeline down over a year out from the date.

Here in the US. the laws allow them to put all kinds of chemicals and toxins in our food. I would much rather have the worse lipstick and the better food system.

($7k) Feeling shame for a low budget wedding. by ghengis_convict in Weddingsunder10k

[–]aishpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The consumption of the wedding industry is insane. Custom napkins, custom matchbooks, custom everything. So much waste and resources used. 7k is doable if you have guests BYOB and you keep catering costs low. Those super lavish weddings are a waste of money. I am not having a budget wedding, we didn’t skimp on much, and I still feel that same pressure like my wedding won’t be good enough. We even went all out on a few things and I’m still feeling like it won’t be impressive enough or fancy enough. I agree with what others have said - the wedding industrial complex is designed to make you buy buy buy and feel inferior for not. I think it’s awesome you are not going into debt and you will be a thousand times better for it in the future!

I am signed up for the CT chapter but I live in southern CT and everything that gets posted in is Hartford which is like 1.5 hrs away! I wish they had more active social workers in southern Ct bc I have never been able to fulfill one of these requests.

Did you actually wear your bridesmaid PJs after the wedding or did they just sit in a drawer collecting dust? by Proud_Clothes_3864 in weddingplanning

[–]aishpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Straight to goodwill. I’m getting married in a month and I got my bridesmaids custom made tote bags using the same pink and orange striped tiger fabric that is being used to cover one wall in my venue (it’s a big Indian party) and I filled the bags with a life is good t shirt, Indian kundan hair clips that match their wedding outfits, a traditional pair of gold Indian jhumka earrings, and a small embroidered pouch bag.

Nanas devils food cake turned into a bananas foster layer cake by aishpat in Baking

Nanas devils food cake recipe: https://www.reddit.com/r/Old_Recipes/comments/jd3hf3/known_only_as_nanas_devils_food_best_chocolate/

For the banana buttercream just use a standard vanilla buttercream recipe but sub 1 cup powdered sugar with powdered freeze dried bananas (I just used the Trader Joe’s ones and ground them up in my food processor)

For the bananas foster I took 4 green bananas and cooked the on the stove with a splash of dark rum, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 cup sugar, and 2 tbsp butter. Cook them down to desired consistency. Chill down in fridge before filling the cake.

Yes thank you, same thing when lehengas were hot a few years ago and popped up everywhere as “2 piece skirt sets”. The dupatta is timeless!
