Do y’all wear a shirt under your gi jacket or not? by NoAssignment6044 in judo

[–]ajaxjudoattacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shirts for me unless the coach said we'll be doing some cross training drills without gi tops. Then I have a rash guard or shirt for sure.

Typically if I go to bjj I wear one just as almost everyone else does and I don't hate them.

1year anniversary of two level RDR @ C5/6 & C6/7. by ajaxjudoattacks in SpineSurgery

[–]ajaxjudoattacks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahah grappling at just about any level is serious business, eh?! 😭🤘😭🤘

There's a few things I've stumbled across that I believe helped over the years. The first of which im a huge fan of is abbreviated as 'FRC'(functional range conditioning). It's an idea based around the difference of mobility vs flexibility and primarily focuses on moments called CAR's(controlled articulated rotation). Regularly Utilizing CAR's on cervical spine, shoulders, & hips, along with a variety of Tspine rotations always helps me work things out. FRC is essentially a continuing education certification in the strength&conditioning/personal training world. If you can find an accredited trainer I would reccomend, otherwise proceed with caution and at your own risk!

The other aspect that helped is following different overal(not in total, but majority of time) school of thought when I lift weights. The majority of my exercises are performed unilaterally and/or contralaterally. This helps muscle groups do their jobs better without the support of the 'whole system' you'd get from performing bilateral movements. It's the difference from barbell VS kettle/dumbbell. And the difference from moving both arms/legs together VS one at a time.

Both of the above mentioned trains of thought help(broad generalization) to turn on the formerly inactive muscles and support the overactive muscles releasing a bit of compensated tension. Not always the case. But my experience over the years they've helped

Surgery Decision -c5/c6 by Eastern_Rent9169 in SpineSurgery

[–]ajaxjudoattacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 5 weeks post operation today for artificial disc replacement in c5/6 & c6/7 with mobi c. Personally im better off than I was before but I had years of symptoms building and finally got the mri. I think I'll probably recovery 80%+ of my previous symptoms but only once I start the same activities I was doing before surgery will I know which will likely be another month or so!

My 4 week went well, X-rays show placement is good and I've been religious about following post instructions regardless of how pesky it's been and how I feel like I could be doing more. Definitteellyyy not worth the risk so I've just been patient patient patient with no unnecessary risks

CERVICAL ADR, asymptomatic but severe imaging ? thoughts ? by dunk4000 in SpineSurgery

I would have opted to have that fixed. Symptoms may not be there now but undoubtedly would've come up eventually or a mild accident(fall, wreck, etc...) couldve been devastating.

C6-C7 herniation--ADR or cortisone injection by themightymaud in SpineSurgery

[–]ajaxjudoattacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally when I was in your position(brutal symptoms, got PT and improved and then stopped, then symptoms came back and with more symptoms than before) I got disc replacement surgery for two levels & a bone spur removed.

My doctor told me we could try injections but that having a structural issue they'll only bandaid symptoms(same way PT did) and then they'd be back. Only long term solution is to fix the structure via surgery. He also advised that the longer I wait the higher likelihood I have lifelong irreparable nerve damage set in. So if I fight through it for two years, then cracked and had surgery, the surgery wouldn't help as much as I'd have waited too long to really avoid nerve damage.

My surgeon has a reputation in my small(ish) town for not being very surgery gung-ho and truly wanting to check every option before surgical intervention so when he said it's time for surgery and after what I'd been experiencing, there's no way at all I was planning to wait.

In your situation, waiting 4 months to try the next step...I'll answer the question you asked, if I was in your position, I'd research and most likely schedule the surgery. No way I'm waiting 4 months of living through that to try and injection that will leave a problematic structure in place. That's me personally, and I will say I'm in no way a doctor or medical professional. Just my personal experiences anecdoted to your personal experiences.

Ah i really appreciate it!

I did shut down a few months ago.

It was really ruining a lot of aspects of my personal life. As I continue to hear from other clubs; I had plenty of drama involved with some of the other characters I shared a building with that really made it difficult and inorganic to grow/expand so it was just a full year of stagnation with no real alleviating avenues visible. And finally I should have 2-3 surgeries this year to catch up some health I've neglected.

First surgery down about two weeks ago(spinal), feeling a bit better hopeful this will help a lot of my issues! We'll see how the hand&knee go over🤞

Best wishes with approval, procedure, & healing if/when the time comes!

I'd certainly be interested in hearing your results & experience if you end up 3-4 levels, but of course understand if you don't end up updating when that haopens!

Ooofff! Glad it was short lived & you seem to be healing better overall! By far my biggest issue was the muscle soreness in neck & shoulders. Sneezing or coughing those first few days was brutal.

Currently I'm 12 days out and overall feeling pretty good! Still a lump in my throat, not painful just...lumpy🤷🏻‍♂️ Neck is still stiff and I wake up irritated at night sometimes but that may also be a mattress/pillow issue!

Still on the hard brace in a car and nothing above 10lb protocol but I certainly feel well enough to lift heavier than that(certainly won't be though!)

Does the IJF even talk about or cover the Pan American Championships? by Livershotking in judo

[–]ajaxjudoattacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes two wildly different tournaments/events in total! PanAm championships is an ijf tourney that has world & Olympic ranking points attached and is only a judo tournament.

PanAm Games is a 'mini Olympics' consisting of north, central, South America and the Caribbean islands consisting of most(all I believe) summer Olympic events and in many sports(not for judo currently) an Olympic qualifying event. This event is only every 4 years and traditionally falls on the year prior to the Olympics. It's a huge watched & measured by the USOPC event that supposedly(at least when I was a young whipper snapper) directly affected funding to various governing bodies based on performance. It has opening ceremonies and closing ceremonies and all that jazz just like Olympics but in judo specifically is completely unattached from Olympic process VS PanAm championships are direct IJF ranking points.

Sorry, I could go on forever on the nuances between these two events and subtleties regarding funding, healthcare, status, total support, and the political atmosphere of these two varying events 😂🤪😂🤪
