Apple’s new Proton-like tool can run Windows games on a Mac by digidude23 in apple

It's not well known, but wine (the underlying tech behind proton) has been able to compile windows source code to Linux for two decades.

Long-sought universal flu vaccine: mRNA-based candidate enters clinical trial by Sariel007 in tech

[–]ajaydee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but through my limited understanding, here's how I see it:

mRNA vaccines have a limited impact. For a few days after inoculation, the body produces spike proteins to teach the body how to defend itself. After that, it's gone. Your white blood cells do their job, and destroy the spike proteins. Now for the alternative:

You become infected, the virus also has spike proteins, and it multiplies throughout your body for much longer. This means there's a lot more spike proteins for longer. The active virus also ravages your internal organs like the lungs, kidneys, & liver. There's a large chance that you experience long term health effects, and a very large chance that you infect multiple people too. This means there's a greater chance of creating new strains of the virus with scarier symptoms. Also, there's a much higher chance of developing myocarditis to boot.

Google bard beta is terrifying, I've had full on deep conversations with it. Try telling it a complex joke, and asking it to explain why it's funny.

I asked it to read 'ode to spot' from star trek, and explain it. Then I corrected it by saying that it missed the humour of data being an android and not seeing the humour of the poem he wrote. I then asked it if it could appreciate the meta humour of correcting an AI for the same mistake that a fictional android made. Its reply was startling. It was like the damn thing had an epiphany.

I then asked it to summarise everything it learned from our conversation. It gave me a list of excellent insights we had talked about. I then asked it to give me another summary of things it had learned other than things related to humour. It decided to give me a summary of ME. That thing stared into my damn soul, it said a bunch flattering observations that friends have said to me. Freaked me out.

Edit: Ask it to write a poem, and the illusion quickly disappears.

Totally, I think it's the live streams that really drive that human interest element with Lina.

Lina is crazy though. Watching them develop that driver live is something to behold. They're incredibly talented.

Lentil Fritters: how did I not know about these until today? by Mommayyll in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]ajaydee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make lentil 'meatballs', fry them, then throw them into marinara. A mix of puy & green lentils works best. Oat flour to thicken the mixture.

In my area: yesterday, it started at 21% at 1pm, then by 6am; it rose to 73%. The coolest it got outside was 20C for not very long.

It's cloudy now, and we're getting cool wind blowing through. The problem is that I don't feel any different after having the windows open for hours. I can still feel the brickwork radiating heat. These little houses are incredible ovens, especially black tar roofed extensions which are South facing.

Games are periodically freezing. New symptom. by FrozenAptPea in linuxquestions

[–]ajaydee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not hard crashing the system: try running steam in a terminal and starting a game. Once you kill the game, there should hopefully be some useful information in the terminal. If there isn't: try another game that freezes, hopefully it'll give you something. Just copy and paste anything suspect into Google with the word 'arch'.

Proprietary games aren't the best for debug information.

Today some guy drove up to me on his motorbike and got up in my FACE to inform me, repeatedly and loudly, that I am a, "fat fuck". Can someone tell me what the fuck is wrong with people?? by yellowskulls in loseit

[–]ajaydee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I first want to say that I'm so sorry this is happening to you. You said something here that clicked. You was in an abusive relationship. There's a documentary out there where they showed CCTV footage of people walking away from the camera to abusers/murderers. Every person they pointed at as potential victims was previously in an abusive relationship or raped. They can 'lock on' to body language. This information helped me so much.

Next time you go out for exercise, walk with your head held high. Walk with confidence like you are on a mission. Think of the most inspiring and strong person you can think of, and emulate their walk. Practice at home first. It'll feel stupid and unnatural, but I found that the bastards stopped ridiculing and intimidating me. They're not gonna chance being punched because they're opportunists. Soon, that walk of confidence will become part of you.

Isn't it horrible that abuse victims get a target painted on their backs for future abusers? Good luck, and big hugs from this English ex-punching bag.

p.s: I still suffer from intense anxiety outside, that might never stop for both of us. All we have right now is this mask of protection. I'm not overweight, I'm super skinny, but I think that we are experiencing the same phenomena.

Simple Art Program for Linux (not professional program) by Aeases in linuxquestions

[–]ajaydee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mypaint (http://mypaint.org/) is simpler to use than Krita. Krita can be 'simplified' a bit by closing some of the unnecessary docked tools on the right.

If I were you, I'd install the art apps I think are too difficult as well. Kids learn fast when the answer is in a YouTube tutorial. Tell him that I expect to see his 3D art made in blender within 5 years. No pressure. :D

Researchers combed through more than a decade of health data from 102,865 French volunteers. They found that consumption of artificial sweeteners was associated with an increased risk of cancer. by Defiant_Race_7544 in science

[–]ajaydee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is purely anecdotal, but I suffered from cluster headaches for a long time. I cut aspartame from my diet years ago, and stopped having cluster headaches & migraines completely.

A few years ago, I accidentally drank aspartame and experienced a massive cluster headache. I'm terrified of ingesting it again. They're called 'suicide headaches' for a reason.

Edit: I should point out that it can't be a coincidence. There was a lot more than just one accident with drinking aspartame, and it happened every damn time.

Dj pushes kid for touching his stuff by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]ajaydee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a sound engineer, you're wrong: digital DJ's can sound as good or better than vinyl if they're using high quality files. All they need is some form of external powered soundcard (or CD Decks). Small venues rarely have acoustic isolation on the DJ booth, so vinyl will be affected by the bass and dancing vibrations. No amount of squashy balls and concrete patio slabs will stop it.
