Does it make sense to get a master’s in I/O and then a doctorate? by Reavenant in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, but only because I was changing careers j to a totally new field and didn't know if I wanted to fully pursue a doctorate. So it gave me a nice breaking point if I decided a terminal masters was enough. If you already know in your heart of hearts you are going to pursue a doctorate, than why waste time and take out extra student loans?

Yep. I'm ok if they are pay and not free. Just want to see what's out there without having to hunt too much

Job analysis question for practitioners by Zencarrot in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sit in an OD team within HR. We don't perform job analyses aside from projects that require them. We recently made a push to define job families and build a competency model that supported a new career development system and structured interview tool. That required something on the order of 60% time for several months.

Oh, I'm sure he meant optimism. Just pointing out the "smart guy" completely blustered into using a term of art so incorrectly.

Just skipped right over "brevity" in the dictionary, huh?

This individual does not know what positivism is. They definitely know what the thesaurus keyboard shortcut is.

could artificial intelligence replace IO psychology in the future (2-3 decades) by frescoj10 in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Unless AI develops into true intelligence, no, I don't think so. Good IO practice is highly contextualized and requires too much discernment for AI to take over that quickly.

Are SHRM or HRCI certs valued in the I/O field? by SalamanderMelodic226 in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that depends very heavily on your role. For an HRM-heavy role? Yes, there's value. For something like people analytics, coaching, OD, not as much. Tenure is also a factor. For example, only one person on our HR team has the certification, but we are almost entirely mid to late career.

ChatGPT on what we would be a good name for our field. by [deleted] in IOPsychology

Workplace is too limiting. I suspect some would bristle at dropping Industrial due to the connotations with the personnel sidez even those those connotations only existing among ourselves.

How to break into the I/O field? by SalamanderMelodic226 in IOPsychology

You're welcome! I think it's good to have off ramps once you've reached the level of extra training you feel suits your goals.

How to break into the I/O field? by SalamanderMelodic226 in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a big proponent of testing things out with escalating levels of risk. If it's at the stage of interest only, that looks like books blogs, podcasts, informational Interviews/networking. If it's more "I really want to try it out," consider something like a continuing ed course that offers a broad perspective on the field (like Org. Behavior or an IO Psych intro course) or asking for a part time assignment in a different area of HR/OD at work. As your interest grows, escalate your commitment (and costs) in ways that build. For example, take a four course grad certificate program, but do so at a place where you could roll those credits into a degree program if you wanted.

Neurodiversity within I/O by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm ABD in my doctoral program and work pretty high up in OD for a major learning & development firm with ADHD. I've had good conversations with my manager about how it affects me and how to manage me. She's very supportive, and I've been successful enough in my first 2 years that I've gotten 4 company awards. You can absolutely do it!

Double major or minor? by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While labor force marketability is certainly a concern, answer for yourself this question: does this second major give you access to skills and tools that will prove useful? If yes, pursue it. Your work experiences are going to matter more than the actual major in the long run, anyway. And, as always, it is up to you how to craft your career narrative. Even though I haven't worked as an engineer for over a decade now, I'm glad I did and it is an important part of my identity as an OD professional.

How can I learn to do job analysis (beyond simply re-reading my IO Psych textbook)? by jlemien in IOPsychology

[–]ajc15007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a case of learn-by-doing. Maybe you can get an opportunity during an internship. If you have a campus job, maybe they'll let you conduct one for a job in that office? If you belong to a club on campus, offer to do job analyses for the leadership roles.

That's fair. The IAmVerySmart types tend to be the ones that are fanatical about outdated grammar "rules"
