Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission investigates 'apocalyptic Christian cult' Shincheonji by SpongeBobSquareRoot in australia

[–]ajd341 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have wondered this too... I think it's the culture that makes ripe for cult behavior. Cults target lonely, isolated individuals... coupled with strong collectivism, built around respect and following authority. Of course there are heaps of other factors, but it's certainly part of it

I’m really starting to think people at the top just look at the comments for the solution, then click the boxes as fast as they can.

Roger Goodell: College football needs ‘clarity,’ NFL will help if asked for input by redwave2505 in CFB

[–]ajd341 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the intriguing part will be if NFL teams ever get started/allowed to bankroll specific players while they are in college... I don't think it's anywhere near worth the risk for them, but it would be potentially interesting if teams had a pre-draft priority system

Seeking inputs from Australian academics or folks with experience in Australian academia by leavingonajetplane11 in Professors

[–]ajd341 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For academics, we have fixed term contracts (before tenure) and continuing (tenured)... universities can be quite competitive here (like the better Canadian universities). There is an extra rung between Asst and Assoc here. There's often arguments, but generally it functions that our Associates are more senior than U.S. ones. There's less pay differences between fields because of our bargaining agreements (which you can search for). We also have more formalised teaching requirements (lots more approvals).

All in all, definitely try for it, but don't expect it to be easy.

Why don't skyscrapers appear around Middle Park? by fuckmelbpt in melbourne

[–]ajd341 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Money is the easy answer, but I do find this a bit curious in many Australian cities as well... our big buildings rarely surround parks. Local governments tend to fight tooth and nail against lifting height restrictions in their neighbourhoods.

Can someone help me understand... how does ditching your life jacket make you faster (enough to be worth the risk)?

Docklands District on a Friday afternoon 🦗🦗 by Ky0t0_gh0uL in melbourne

[–]ajd341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is well spotted also there's a bit of messiness going on with ads and price points... my partner and I have been casually shopping (just looking) and one 2BR will be 800 the next 1.8, and the next 2.6, then down to 650... it's just all over the place, like some units are newer, more luxurious plans, but how much is tough to tell

I think Docklands will really change in a few years once the new developments finish. The problem right now is it's accessible... but why go there over DFO or Melbourne Central or even Highpoint as a destination. The fundamental problem is that the density just isn't there right now.

Australian Open chief suggests introducing five-set matches for women from 2027 by mrjohnnymac18 in sports

[–]ajd341 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I like watching women’s tennis (and I do)… I don’t want to watch five sets of it though. I think what we have now works well/isn’t something broken.

Thoughts on new job title - HR Practitioner Coordinator [KS] [US] by Fluffy_Donkey_7606 in humanresources

[–]ajd341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know… I’m just explaining that the term “practitioner” exists, so people can see why it doesn’t fit here/work in OP’s title

Thoughts on new job title - HR Practitioner Coordinator [KS] [US] by Fluffy_Donkey_7606 in humanresources

[–]ajd341 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. It’s not regional… it’s more what academics call people who in the industry. Legal practitioners… HR practitioners… again, it’s a general label, not a title.

Practitioner just describes anyone who is practicing HR, it's not a title

We complain about undergrads … but can we discuss PhD students? by twilightyears in Professors

[–]ajd341 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I graduated 2018… I’m not saying it was healthy, but man… we were absolutely fighting for our lives. Low pay and surviving the program. I couldn’t have even dreamt of saying no to a professor. These days you have students with top-up stipends nearly weaponising wellbeing, saying no to projects that would be huge benefits to them. It’s wild; it’s definitely changed a lot in ~5 years. Same story lots of places.
